Necrothread alert! Previous post was from 2007!

if you already have plenty of compiled AHK scripts then this tool will come in handy..

I have two questions:

  • Does this tool work with EXEs that have nothing to do with AHK?
  • If so, do you know where I can find that tool since that link is now dead?

Yeah, that two character limitation can be aggravating, especially on a software site such as this where you might do a search which includes a version number, and especially considering your example in that screenshot: Windows 7.

I've had the same error message a few times myself trying to find a Windows 7 topic on this site.

Living Room / Re: Windows doesn't recognize HDD.
« Last post by Deozaan on March 23, 2010, 12:23 PM »
So how was the win98 boot cd different than using any other kind of a "live cd"?  I was under the impression if the HD didn't show up under the BIOS, it wouldn't show up under anything.  Reply #12 says the BIOS didn't see the HD.

First of all, Reply #12 was in regard to the HDD mentioned in the original post, but the one I used a Win98 Boot CD on was a different hard drive in a different PC (a laptop), as I stated here (Reply #18):

Interestingly enough I'm having the same problem with another drive from another computer, however this time I do care about that data on the drive and would like to try to restore the partition headers.

I suppose I was a bit unclear in that post. What I meant was that I was having the same problem as the original post (HDD showing up everywhere but Windows), not the same problem as Reply #12 (HDD no longer showing up in BIOS).

And I think I may also have been unclear in this post:

I managed to get it to work by using a Win98 boot CD and using the DOS version of TestDisk. Managed to save quite a bit of data, too, so thanks a lot for recommending that to me!

What I meant was that I managed to get TestDisk to work from DOS.

So, here's the final report:

I booted into DOS from the Win98 Boot CD and ran the DOS version of TestDisk to read the laptop's hard drive contents and backup a bunch of stuff to another drive. The reason why I used the Win98 Boot CD instead of a Linux Live CD was simply because I couldn't figure out how to get TestDisk to run in Linux.

As for the HDD in the PC this thread was originally created for, (i.e. status update directly related to Reply #12): Somehow after running scandisk and the computer locking up and then the HDD no longer showing up in the BIOS, the bootloader (or something) on the Windows HDD got messed up and the PC wouldn't boot into Windows anymore. It would tell me to insert a system disk and press Enter. In other words, now I'm talking about a 3rd HDD, which is unique from the laptop HDD and the one this thread originally asked about.

So I booted into an Ubuntu Live CD and ran the Disk Utility and checked the partitions on the drive for errors. It said everything was fine. Thinking I hadn't accomplished anything, but unsure what to do, I rebooted the computer and now I'm back to all drives showing up in the BIOS, the PC booting properly into Windows, but once again the HDD this thread was created for is not showing up in Windows.

So, for the Desktop PC: I'll just call the one that shows up in BIOS but not Windows dead. I'll keep my eye on the Windows Boot HDD in case it starts acting wonky again.

For the laptop: Everything important has been backed up and a replacement HDD has been ordered.

Phew! Is that confusing or what?

N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Release: Twigatelle
« Last post by Deozaan on March 23, 2010, 01:54 AM »
Yes folks, I finally uploaded Twigatelle 1.1!

New level (11), small tweaks to the bounce, but just a general update to show that I'm back in action

Okay so I just ran it and I finally managed to get it to update itself, but for some reason it only updated to version 1.0.

So if you've fixed this in version 1.1 please ignore:

If I lose and click retry (or if I win and go to the next level) while the pegs are still popping and points are flying toward the score, all those special effects disappear while the pegs fly into place, but then they reappear and the points fly toward the score (but do not add to it) and the popping peg effects burst (but pegs stay put).

How the heck did this miss?

How did this miss.png

This is what I'm talking about when I say the aiming still feels off. When I launch the ball, I expect the center of the ball to end up exactly where my mouse is pointing. This is not happening, and it makes aiming at any distance to be wonky. It's not that I mind missing a peg if my aim is bad, it's just that for some reason it invokes the emotion of being cheated or slighted. It makes me feel like the game is unfair. As such, I have a really hard time completing any of the levels. Almost every single round I play, the ball often does not ricochet the way I was expecting because it's not in the place I told it to go.

People who patronize sites like these don't care if the key is 100% legal. They don't care about supporting Microsoft, taking the pride in doing the right thing, or anything like that. All these people care about is a key that will get them past the security & DRM checks. As long as it works they're happy.

If that's true then why bother paying for it at all? It's not that hard to find a keygen or a crack for just about any major software out there.

I guess it does give you plausable deniability: You could just claim you thought it was legitimate and that you're the victim of a scam. But other than that, if you really don't care about it being legitimate/legal, what's the point of giving your payment/personal info to these shady "dealers"?

Now that I've said that, it would be just my luck that one of these days I'll truly be taken by a scam and then someone will see that I posted this and I'll go to jail. ;) :(

I don't know if shades script has the ability to do copy only the changes that were made on the usb drive instead of copying the whole thing everytime.

This sounds quite a bit more involved, requiring some sort of Diff utility to compare the contents of the old backup(s) to the current file. And if it created a new zip of just the changes, then it would have to compare every zipped backup to the USB drive every time it was inserted, and that sounds like a big mess of trouble to me.

It almost sounds to me that something like FileHamster would be better for you, if you could figure out a way to get it to work only with your USB drive (such as somehow ensuring that your Kingston 16GB USB drive is always assigned the same drive letter, and nothing else can use that drive letter).

Makes me curious, is "Salatschleuder" an English word that has been all jumbled up? If it's not an English word, what language is it and what does it mean?
It is a German compound of Salat (salad) and Schleuder (centrifuge). The English term is "salad spinner".

Thanks. I thought it sounded Germanic, and in fact it sounded a lot like a product I saw advertised during my childhood: Salad Shooter

Off-Topic sidenote about Esperanto
It's interesting to see the German compound as I've recently been looking into the language of Esperantow, which has Germanic influences and uses word compounding quite frequently to make up several thousands of words from a relatively few root words:

The core vocabulary of Esperanto was defined by Lingvo Internacia, published by Zamenhof in 1887. This book listed 900 roots; these could be expanded into tens of thousands of words with prefixes, suffixes and compounding.

It may also be that putting the path in quotes will fix the whitespace problem:

Is there a chance that it doesn't like the spaces in the path? i.e. "c:\Kingston Backup 16gb\" as opposed to something like "C:\Kingston\" or "C:\Kingston_Backup_16GB\"?

I wish I could help more. I don't know much about the special command prompt commands, and nothing about commandline commands for 7-zip.

Is this using the same concept of "It doesn't matter in what order the letters of a word are, as long as the first and last letters are in their correct place, most people can read it"?

I have to admit that some of the examples didn't really make sense to me, but I did think it was interesting to consider using architectural design as a way to organize an online community.

I just tried it out. It's very nice. I noticed a couple of things that you may want to fix up:

v1.0.2 - 2009-12-31
! Column order and widths weren't being saved properly.

In both the changelog.txt and the built-in changelog from the Help -> About menu, the above version info doesn't be saved properly. ;)

Heh, it would be funny to see a changelog where the only update was correcting a mistake in the changelog. ;D So I suppose it's a good thing I found a couple other issues:

The Help -> Contents dialog is oddly formatted. Lots of indentations and early newlines. :-\ Specifically parts 1 and 3.

Help Contents.png

And finally, the Help -> About window size is a little a bit too small to read without scrolling horizontally, and when I drag to resize the window, it doesn't save the window size for the next time I bring it up.

Can you tell I'm just looking for a way to use the awesome built-in Check for Updates option?  :D

It's kind of crazy but I'm just now going through some of the NANY 2010 entries, and this one looks really great. I hope you have continued development on it.

I just have one concern:

Will it remember my username/password combo for websites? Quite often I'll type my username, press tab, then type in my password. I certainly don't want it suggesting my password as I type in my username.

Sisyphus?
Thanks for linking the wise-crack as I did have to look that one up... :) *Shrug*

It's actually a damn good example, especially this first Part:
In Greek mythology, Sisyphus (pronounced /ˈsɪsəfəs/; Greek: Σίσυφος sísypʰos  [ˈsisifos] (help·info)) was a king punished in Tartarus by being cursed to roll a huge boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity.

The word sisyphean means, according to the American Heritage Dictionary, "endless and unavailing, as labor or a task."

...It indeed "felt" like a punishment.
(see attachment in previous post)

After reading this discussion it seemed only fitting to update the "short" description to something more suitable.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
« Last post by Deozaan on March 21, 2010, 01:36 AM »
I guess I should mention that I'm currently downloading the ISO. It will take a while (I'm tethering my cell phone to my PC for internet connection) and then I'll need to figure out which machine to install it on, since there doesn't seem to be a way to do it my usual way with Wubi.

I'll likely reply with my experiences in a few days, but it may not work well without an internet connection in case I need special drivers or apps. Hopefully 10.04 will be able to handle my 3G tethering.

If anyone else is trying it out, I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences.

EDIT:

I just noticed this in the Known Issues:

Wubi as included on the ISO images is unable to enter its second stage of installation, so you will not be able to install inside Windows using just an ISO image in this beta release. As a workaround, users who are installing the Ubuntu Desktop Edition can download the stand-alone version of wubi from http://releases.ubun...u.com/10.04/wubi.exe which includes the fix for this bug. This bug will be fully addressed for 10.04 LTS Beta 2. (541607)

I didn't know that Wubi was included on the ISO, not that it helps in this case, but it's good to know that there's a link to a working version. The download is going to complete in just a couple of minutes now, so I guess I'll be able to give it a try using Wubi soon after all.

General Software Discussion / Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)

I'm officially starting the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx thread. I know it's about a month early, but I just found out that the Beta 1 is available for trial:

The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. This is the first Ubuntu 10.04 beta release, which brings a host of exciting new features.

Note: This is a beta release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.

And here are a few changes in Lucid Lynx that I find interesting:

  • Mozilla Firefox's default search engine has been changed to Yahoo! The default Home Page will use either Google or Yahoo! depending on user setting.
  • Ubuntu One Music Store. Millions of songs are available for purchase from your Ubuntu desktop, integrated with the Rhythmbox Music Player and using Ubuntu One cloud storage for backup and easy sync. Watch http://one.ubuntu.com/blog for the public beta launch.
  • Ubuntu One File Synching. Select any folder in your home directory for sync, pick from your existing contacts when sharing folders. An updated preferences application has been added, with more features.
  • We now feature built-in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with the MeMenu in the panel, which is built upon the Gwibber project, which has a completely new, more reliable backend built on top of desktopcouch. Gwibber now also supports a multi-column view for monitoring multiple feeds simultaneously.
  • New default open source driver for nVidia hardware

On pornography on the Pirate Bay:

"Porn is useless. I compare porn to pizza: if I am really hungry I wouldn't go buy a pizza and watch it. I would eat it."

Deja Vu: I was having a stupid/silly conversation with a friend when I was 18 and somehow we decided that "Easy Cheese Pizza" was a sexual euphemism of some sort. I can gladly say that I don't remember the details of what it was supposed to mean, but it was just strange having that memory pulled back from the deep recesses of my subconscious like that. I had completely forgotten about that for all these years until reading that analogy. Speaking of which, I have no idea what he means by that analogy. Is he suggesting that people should eat pictures?

Shuttleworth on Ubuntu
I was wondering how something like Ubuntu would/could make money. That article had some good information that opened my eyes a bit.

Gimme 3D gaming, Gimme motion sensors...GIMME SOMETHING FUN

I'm pretty sure the PS3 Move is a motion sensor. And besides that the SIXAXXIS/DualShock 3 (or whatever it's called) have motion sensors in them as well.

ICANN .xxx TLD
I still don't get what the fuss is about that TLD. They should make that TLD available, give everyone a chance to move their .com or whatever over (whoever has the .com gets dibs on the .xxx for 30 days or something to make sure opportunists don't steal the domain name) and then .coms (and any other TLD) are no longer allowed to host porn. Seems simple enough. There will be sites that slip through the cracks, but if people can cause a DCMA takedown as easily as it seems they can then I don't see why there couldn't be a way to do something similar for having porn on the internetz where it doesn't belong. It just seems like a simple way to let people get what they want or stay away from what they don't want.

HTML5 2D
I personally don't see why you'd want to put graphics into HTML. Don't png and gif and jpg and svg already do everything you need for 2D images? Doesn't Javascript's canvas make up for what you can't do with the other image formats?
