Just a suggestion- you might want to limit it to local ips to even further close it off from abuse.

i.e.
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
169.254.0.0 -169.254.255.255

Software, Games, Gift Certificates... anything that can be distributed digitally.  And it's more about the game and interactions than the actual gifts :)

I was thinking about that- we don't want to encourage any violations of TOS/EULA, but in the end, enforcing such things is going to be up to the parties involved.  Again, this is for the recycling of software that might not be in use/might be undesired- I buy a lot of stuff on Bits/Steam/Galas that I end up never using or have a copy of and forgot it.  It is in that spirit that things should be posted and given away.

Community Giveaways / DC Community Digital White Elephant
« Last post by wraith808 on November 20, 2012, 04:20 PM »
Have you ever heard of a White Elephant Gift Exchangew?  I thought about doing a variant of it here, and wanted to see if there was any interest (and who would be interested) in doing one on DC to promote community among the members.

I was thinking of the following parameters:
  • Nothing above $10
  • Everything must be digital, with a code that can be PM'd to the receiver
  • Everyone is randomly assigned a person
  • One person is randomly chosen to start, and the person that they were gifted by is revealed.
  • The next person then has their gifter revealed, and chooses whether to keep their gifter, or take one that was given before
  • Two times through the list, with a maximum of two steals of any gift are possible

Afterwards, we can exchange the gift codes via PM.  Depending on how many people are participating, there will probably be a time limit set on turns when your turn comes up.  I was also thinking that we should set a limit on participants, i.e. those who have been members longer than 3 months or a certain number of posts, but I'm sort of torn on that, and in this planning wanted to get opinions from those that are participating.

Thoughts?  Interest?

Did you get a deal on software and find out you already had it?  Or what about a bundle that includes duplicates of things that you have?  Then this section is for you!

This section is for posts relating to things (software, hardware, etc) that members of the community have to give away.

Any kind of products that you are willing to ship and/or e-mail to others can be included (the offers should be at a minimum be computer related), though no financial recompense should be expected.  How the offer is given away should be determined by the giver, though it is suggested that they be limited to people that actively participate (or have participated) on the board, to keep people from trolling this area for freebies.

Companies can do giveaways too- but you must make clear your affiliation with the company in question.

Please do not spam the section with repeated multiple posts.

To be clear, this section exists purely for the reward of being able to gift someone with something that they might like to have- not for promotion or any other reason.

Wouldn't it just be nice if Microsoft would just embrace Webkit and then extend it? :P

Now, that is the impossible dream, methinks  :-\.

Actually, I think that was sarcasm- in response to their approach prior to this with Java.

From the article:
The Oculists’ seal, featuring a cataract needle, a pair of pince-nez, and two cats watching over mice.

 ;)

The funny thing about this is bit about the Oculists having agents in the Freemasons, and treating them like a joke. ;D

They Cracked This 250 Year-Old Code, And Found a Secret Society Inside (via Wired)

For more than 200 years, this book concealed the arcane rituals of an ancient order. But cracking the code only deepened the mystery.

Riveting stuff, and the fact that they had to go to such extremes to hide such studies that we take for granted shows why we need to be concerned about the draconian steps being taken today.

Nothing wrong with it- however there are some things that should be considered:
1. You have to make sure that you eject safely.  The OS holds on to NTFS resources longer, and if you just remove it, the chances are high that you will corrupt data (write-caching).
2. There's also a lot more writing to the drive, which will reduce the life of the drive, and minimally reduce performance.
3. NTFS allows encryption- but be aware that if you do, you will not be able to open the files anywhere else.
4. There's also a space overhead for NTFS.  How much varies by where you look for the information, but it seems to be about 4%.

No breaking changes- but they are some things to be aware of.

Microsoft has been successful in hardware before.  Just not hardware platforms.  And I haven't been able to figure out why they haven't been able to make that connection.  I think it's a lack of commitment?

TStringGrid is a better choice in general- TDrawGrid is usually only used if you are making a totally custom data storage and grid.  The most basic difference is TStringGrid has a data storage mechanism behind it- TDrawGrid has no such thing.  And though it's called TStringGrid, you can draw anything with it if you override the draw method.

A couple of links on the subject:
http://borland.newsg...0703/0703298244.html
http://www.festra.co...d/messages/2241.html

I was originally going to ask you if you really needed to use a TDrawGrid or would a TStringGrid work- but as I was able to get the save working, I backed off of asking that. :)  But yeah... TStringGrid is probably the way to go, even if you use my method.  You can even store the TBead object in the cell on the grid to get rid of the extra data structure, and iterate through the grid instead of the array when saving/loading.

It depends?  I don't trust it as a single source.  I check the references and if the references are verifiable and dependable, then I lean towards trusting it.  I only truly trust it when (a) I know what it is, or (b) I am very sure of a source that checks it out.  I use wikipedia as a starting point and a convenient place where possible facts are accumulated- and a convenient place to send people if I know that the facts check out, and with the caveat that things can change.

While perhaps a bit messy, you may be able to simply grab the object and serialize it to disk, then open it, cast it to the right type, and assign it back. Not sure how you're working things there, but does it make sense for what you need to do?

That was one of my suggestions. :)  And no, it's not a .NET programming language, but the idea is still applicable (and I've used it before with great results).

Living Room / Re: When Kickstarters Fail
« Last post by wraith808 on November 17, 2012, 03:08 PM »
Kickstarter does seem to lend itself more to a project-oriented feasibility study (or a "one-off" creative effort) than it does to the product development and start-up phases of a traditional business plan. As iphiginie pointed out, building and delivering product on an ongoing basis requires a different mindset and finance model.

To this point, I've actually seen many established companies use KS (and to a lesser extent IndieGoGo) for this very purpose- to suss out interest in the product in KS rather than risking the money upfront.  I think this is one of the advantages of KS that isn't really touted.

That's what the lapdogs are for: nice senior cop, bad sub-cops: the work is done, and that's what counts.

Actually... not.  I actually totally agree with a lot of the bad sub-cops and think that certain things should be regulated.  In every case (not just a few that come to light because of dissenters), Mouser chimes in on the side of let it slide, no matter what happens.  That's why everyone jumped in on mouser's side- no matter if you agree or disagree on his policies, etc., he won't censor nor jump in, except in the case of spam, and won't even really defend, other than the most passive of ways.  People that lead by example like that, and don't take offense tend to garner support as they don't cross the line even to defend themselves.

Sorry if your experience has made you assume otherwise, but he's very much always been the voice of reason.  I've found myself on the other side of some of his opinions, and found myself less for that- mostly because in the end, reason used well is more than a match for any sort of righteous indignation.

And... I'm not sure it was mouser that closed the thread.  That seems... unlike him.  And I don't really see a reason to close it, as it did serve a use.  Sometimes people get fed up and overzealous.  I think this was a case of that...
