Tried that too Carol hopless ended up someone who could speak English on a supposed UK freephone number. I am deadly serious. Thats why I posted here. I still connected by Wires but at least its working, the Linksys Modem and Router. I think the problems with the Notebook Adapter. When I find a bit more time to play with it, I will give you email. I don't understand the WPA security etc at the moment its an unsecure connection.  I spent days playing around with over xmas as you know.

Tried reading the instructions too,  not much help actually.

Speak to you soon. Thanks ever so much.

Helen

If you are connected by wire only it can't be an insecure connection. It is only potentially insecure by WiFi.

Try dragging them to the desktop. It won't let you so it should offer to make a shortcut.

Alternatively try right clicking on the desktop and choose New / Create Shortcut. You may be able to select the Zen device from the browse feature.

Strange my Zen icons have create shortcut?

Screenshot Captor / Re: HELP: Screening an entire Web page
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 08, 2006, 09:33 AM »
spent all day working on this..
needs a quite a bit more tweaking but i do have it so it will auto scroll+pan and capture *some* windows, including internet explorer engine.
hopefully ill be posting a test version of sc with scrolling capture soon.

Well done - this will be appreciated by many when you can iron out the gremlins. It really is what has kept me using SnagIT so far for most screen captures as I tend to usually use scrolling window or scrolling region.

Create a shortcut to the player icon (right click on it in MyComputer), rename it to Zen (or anything else you like), copy it to C:\Windows and you can simply type the shortcut name into Start/Run

Not sure about the Zen Touch, but the Zen Micro appears in "MyComputer" as a "drive" although it doesn't have a drive letter. You can certainly play MP3s directly from the device via Windows Explorer.

It's worth noting that if you have student status (or someone in your household) you can get VMWARE Workstation for the price of the upgrade. Still not cheap but considerably cheaper.

Hi Carol, I see what you mean... I've always liked that display too. However, I've never made much use of Windows Explorer in XP, having purchased DOpus while I was still running Win2k, and was unaware that that you could display anything other than "my computer" this way. I'll try to find out about this on the users forum and will get back to you here.

Thanks

Hellie, Can't say I am surprised there has been no email response from Linksys over Christmas and New Year, they will probably have a massive backlog of emails to reply to.

I would suggest you use telephone support. When I have used them in the past they have been reasonably helpful.

Living Room / IDEA / REQUEST : Template generator (for video/DVD cases etc)
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 07, 2006, 03:12 PM »
I have boxes of various dimensions for DVDs and VHS videos (some are non standard).

It would be really useful to have an app which would allow templates to be generated for given dimensions (fron, back, spine) and even allow the template to be filled with graphics and text automatically.

If nothing else it would be good to have a quick template generator for MS Word, similar to the Avery labels templates.

No it's like this:

display.png

which is produced for normal folder displays too in Explorer (you can specify how the categories are setup - this is TYPE but you can also choose FILENAME, in which case you get sections labelled A, B, C etc, or you can specify DATE MODIFIED, in which case you get Today, Yesterday, Last Week, Older).

Ironically this image was produced in DO and is identical to the display shown in Explorer at the Drive level, but it doesn't work in DO when you go into folder level.

Just got a reply (quick eh?):

1) CallingID is available free.  PCMAG gave us a great review but since then we have decided to make our toolbar available at no charge. Please go ahead and download it.
2) Our FireFox version will be available in less than 2 months.

'K, hadn't noticed that in the past.
6668
I have emailed them to clarify the PCMAG review and also asked if there are plans for other browsers.
6669
Doesn't seem to be so there - maybe something will happen in the future to suggest they want cash (though I don't think that would make a good impression on users) but at the moment there isn't a hint that any payment is expected now or in the future.

I have been looking at the reviews. Only one of them mentions money (PCMAG which says it is free for a year) but none of the other reviews mention this at all, and there is nothing on the website to suggest it?

Point taken about MS, but PS3 is actually quite a nice little package and worth investigating if you want to do this sort of thing.

As far as I know Irfan View will display a slideshow on screen from a folder of photos. I'm not sure it can generate 'movies' though. I have never seen such an option. I am no longer using IrfanView so I can't check.
6671
I couldn't easily see the cost from their Web site, but the PC Magazine link they have said its $39.9x per year.  I'd prefer a cheaper alternative that supported other browsers...

Don't know where $39 comes from. On the page I posted it says "Free Download" and it works fine for me. No suggestion it is a trial version.

I think they have paid for services for website owners to register their websites for enhanced status, maybe that is causing confusion.

My only gripe is that it is limited to Internet Explorer (it doesn't work with Maxthon for example).

Just tried it - it is quite nice but does rather less than PhotoStory 3 does (which is free).

It also suggests buying ULead DVD Movie Factory to produce DVDs.

I would suggest if you are going to buy something from Ulead then CD & DVD PictureShow does everything in Picture-to-exe and more and also produces DVDs directly.

I would be very interested to see it (if you can face posting me a copy). Let me know when you get back and if it all works I'll send you my address by PM.

Cheers - have a great trip Tony.

Nope - I can't get them either - it looks like they are created on the fly for the viewer of the webpage and they no longer exist once the playing page is closed.

This looks like quite a useful tool for Internet Explorer users (unfortunately they don't seem to support other browsers - at least not yet).

Check out http://www.callingid.com/Default.aspx

I received an email from Rose City this morning - here is their take on this software:

This month's fr-eeee software offer
With each edition we will try to bring you a useful software offer... just as we did in previous months. Some are direct from Rose City and some are great toys and tools we have discovered elsewhere that we think you will like!

This month we have a special one for you called CallingID for the Internet.

Download CallingID from the developer's web site CallingID lets you see the owner of the site you are accessing, where it is located and whether it is safe for sending personal information. It automatically detects, warns and helps you avoid phishing sites, and verifies safe sites. It executes 52 verification tests on each page you visit and provides you with simple easy, to understand risk assessments.

Many online frauds are perpetrated by deceiving victims into trusting a Web site and revealing confidential information such as credit card numbers. Many times users are lured to these websites by phony Phishing emails. According to Wikipedia, "Phishing is a form of social engineering, characterised by attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication, such as an email or an instant message."

phishing The term phishing arises from the use of increasingly sophisticated lures to "fish" for users' financial information and passwords. These kinds of fraudulent practices are common with scammers posing as eBay, Paypal, various banks and other trusted organizations. You can't always tell the site is fraudulent even if you look in the address bar of your browser. These guys are pretty tricky.

One of the ways to help spot fraud is to find out who has registered a particular Web site; this may not prevent all fraud, but it is a step in the right direction. If you are looking at a site that claims to be in Florida but the owner lives in the Czech Republic (no offense to Czechs intended), it could be a scam.

Among other things, CallingID provides automatic DNS lookups for all URLs. A quick installation of this free product adds a new bar to the IE window showing ownership information, including geographical location for the Web site being visited. CallingID provides full risk assessment for users that send personal or confidential information (such as password, credit card details, etc.) over the Web. Click here for a demo of how CallingID works.

There's no adware, no spyware. Try CallingID... it can help keep you surfing the web safely.
