Finished Programs / Re: DONE: Windows management script
« Last post by tomos on August 17, 2011, 03:21 PM »
I understand very little of what is going on here.
On my desktop Vista "Alt+F4" will close active window/program at once. Did I get this feature from strangers?
:)
I've always considered Alt+F4 a fairly tortuous shortcut to use. You dont have to be quite so acrobatic to use it with your right hand, but then it's on the wrong side of the keyboard.
Ctrl+Q is used in many graphics programmes (I think maybe it was 'ported' from earlier mac versions - where I think it is the default shortcut).

Right-clicking a titlebar will pop up an important menu. Why would you want to disable such a feature?

I've actually never in my life used that menu except to close a window, so at some stage I picked up the right-click to close idea.

It's possibly because I have to use a mouse all day (with work) that I really try to avoid the extra journey into the corner, or even using the mouse at all - but I suspect it's probably got more to do with my impatience in general...

Wow, this is great :-*

everything is working nicely - only thing I havent tested yet is shutdown. **

Here's a somewhat inelegant way to minimise all except for the active window [...]
this works well -
and what with win7 graphics it looks fine too

Re shutdown (remember, not tested yet), is there a way of raising the Alt+F4 windows shutdown dialogue?
That way I would get to choose exactly what I want, but more importantly I would have to confirm, so I would be covered in case of mistaken use of shortcut.

Also, note I have an AltGR key instead of a right alt key. Not sure if this makes a difference, but AutoHotkey help seems to think it's important to make the distinction.

that exactly what I meant to say - it's AltGr here too :-[
Thanks Justice will try it out

^ :)
But seriously - where are you people living :tellme:

I lived 10 years in an inner city, junkies around the corner, etc etc; house did get robbed a couple of times. Got my pockets picked. My partner did get robbed but a gun would have been of zero help in the situation.
I lived in a couple of cities where there were regular murders (in fairness mostly gang/drugs/family-fued related).

I've never been in a situation where I thought a gun would help me. And I cant imagine having one being of any help in the future. YMMV, and maybe the violence where you live is more arbitrary....

I can see shooting guns is a fun pastime, and that they are nice "things" to mess around with, but this is something different - or is it? You people are nuts I think, but then so am I in my own ways :P

well, that got me smiling!

I was hoping one of them would support Right-click on window titlebar to close.

This functionality is very easy to accomplish with a bit of AHK script.  Did you need something like that or do you currently use a different application for this functionality?

I'm now going to ask for an arm and a leg :D
I used have the majority of these running under PowerPro but haven't installed it in new Win 7 machine (& dont want to try).

Windows management (and closing OS) with suggested keys

Minimise active windowCtrl+Alt+F10 [AltGr key]
"Normalise" active windowCtrl+Alt+F11 [AltGr key]
Maximise active windowCtrl+Alt+F12 [AltGr key]
Minimise all windows except currentCtrl+Alt+F9 [AltGr key]
Close active window:
Right-click titlebar
Ctrl+Q
OS related: (see note below)
Shutdown WindowsWin+Q
Sleep WindowsWin+S (?)
Hibernate WindowsWin+H

With windows shutdown, opening the options would be just as good (like you get with Alt+F4).

I'm usually able to edit a script to change shortcuts but never did get beyond that stage :-[
I did find this list of AHK scripts
http://www.autohotkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Script_Listing#Window_Manipulation
but couldnt find what I wanted (no, I didnt follow all links :-\)

HotkeyP insists in going in with startup apps
Doesn't here, on Vista Home Premium, UAC On, from a user account: I just unzipped it into a c:\NoInst\HotKeyP\ directory and it works OK.

I should have given more details - it didnt even ask me - it was WinPatrol that told me it was making a startup entry, when I disallowed this, the programme closed. That happened twice & WinPatrol showed two disabled startup entries
Today it's working okay :tellme:

It has a nice GUI configuration system, if sometimes a bit tedious when you want to add several things, with parameters etc.  I've occasionally had the impression that HotKeyz is a bit slower at some actions than Hoekey, notably at popping up my PopSel menu.

I had major problems with "minimise all windows except current". Didnt minimise to taskbar. but to bottom left corner of screen. Tasskbar (on autohide) refused to show. Had to reboot to clear the mess.. Otherwise seemed okay, especially for someone who barely knows what paramaters are :)

I can try Hoekey again - the latest update is just an exe. I downloaded an older complete version and replaced the exe,  but maybe you have to run the older version first :-\

I was hoping one of them would support Right-click on window titlebar to close. But doesnt seem to be the case.

HotkeyP insists in going in with startup apps - otherwise it closes (here). Bit of a PIA if just trying.

Hoekey not working properly out of the box here.

Sorry should have added my OS:

Not quite the same, but I thought I'd tag it on here:
a cat and a wild young sea eagle on the porch.

In Alaska. The woman filming it seems to be on the porch too, but the eagle isn't bothered. It's a big fishing port and the eagles have gotten used to people because of scavenging fish.

From the same woman, a nice video of a mature sea eagle
http://www.youtube.c...sdI6UlM&index=12

and another very good eagle one, same eagle probably!

I dont know. I find the idea dubious that without "civilisation", we'd be a bunch of savages. It is prevalent in all "modern" societies & religions that I know of. But that doesnt convince me. In fact I would suspect that the demonising of our "animal" nature is one our greatest problems as a society. The idea also helps society and religions to convince us that we need their ways of thinking, their morals, their beliefs, in order to be, or become, "civilised" - or whatever :p
The Lord of the Flies is about a group of kids without parental guidance. Not the same thing as our natural state (although I think that's what the author thought as well...)

Living Room / Re: Bought a desktop and monitor today
« Last post by tomos on August 14, 2011, 01:55 PM »
A monitor that has more resolution is always better. Especially if you take into account that Windows (and I assume Linux and OSX as well) allows the default text size to be adjusted system-wide.

I've seen major problems on a laptop with the font size increased. Dialogue's [OK] button beyond the lower screen edge, etc.
I realise this is probably more often than not because of the software (rather than the OS) and also the minimal screen height that comes with most laptops these days.

But I certainly wouldn't depend on it.

I've just recently gotten an Samsung F3 1TB drive and is being used for the os drive (also got an F4 2TB one too)

It does *not* have a hum that comes and goes - it quite possibly has a constant hum - my machine is not loud but does hum.
No vibrations but could this depend on the case?

What bothered me about it at first was a loud "seek" or write noise - a noise like I would associate with older computers. This was especially loud inititally when installing stuff and I thought I wouldnt be able to cope with it, but it is quite bearable I find in everyday use.

FWIW, since my last machine (which also had two samsung drives) I've tried to use only one drive/partition per hard drive at any one time. This reduces those seek/write noises a lot I found. So, I have roughly a setup like this:
 • HD#1 has an OS partition and a partition for backing stuff up from second HD.
 • Then HD#2 has my working files and a partition for images of the OS drive

Working with BBceditor with another forum.
I'm quoting and the quotes use capital letters for "url" in links.
This doesnt show properly in bbceditor
e.g.
this:
CPU:Intel Core i5 2400
shows as expected thus:
CPU:Intel Core i5 2400

but this
CPU:Intel Core i5 2400
remains the same
CPU:Intel Core i5 2400

it's no big deal to me as I know it will work in the forum but just thought I'd let you know in case it's an easy fix ;)

While I agree with many of the points made on this site, the fact is that the country is split right down the middle. About half of the people favor progressive programs and half want government to get downsized and stay the hell out of their lives. Your hubris at the righteousness of your side vs the other half of the people is amusing. Squawk all you want, but the next election will turn out like the last ones; split right down the middle and decided on statistical error. Someday, real compromise and sanity.....someday. Michael Moore aint it.

^ no, I dont think of it as a revolution.
I mean, I know what you mean fenix and I dont disagree with you.
I do think there's a big class thing goes on, in England especially. And I think the political approach is and has been to work from a place of fear of the people in the poor areas (that's what I was trying to say, and what they were saying in the articles from the blog nudone linked to). Keep em tucked away here. or there. And keep em down.

That's one side of the coin, but the other is the increasing poverty of the masses and increasing richness of the few. That's "even" going on here in Germany (where you can get the lowest wages payable in Western Europe).

OTOH Governments definitely work in fear of the banks, and appear to be more or less in payment of corporations. It's all a mess.
And
Some part of it is about lazy bastards who want more, another - criminals who know Police does nothing to really stop them.
-fenixproductions (August 11, 2011, 05:50 AM)
I'm not blaming the government for what these people are doing, but they sure arent helping (and neither have the previous, nor the previous...)

History repeats itself (no surprise there, humans are pretty dumb after all), this article sums things up quite well: http://neweconomics....1780s-all-over-again

Talk about rebels without a cause.

1780's?  Newbies.  Try reading Summer of blood: The peasants' revolt of 1381 by Dan Jones.

Sounds like an interesting read :)

nudone's link is an interesting read - also other interesting posts about it there.
Everything seems to be working through fear, fear of the banks, fear of the poor. Greed should be thrown in there as well, on all sides...

to me, movie is American English.
It does get used this side of the Atlantic too, but still has an exotic 50's air about it. Of course if you grew up in the 90's as opposed to the 70's YMMV.
I presume it came from "moving pictures", although I only see the term "motion pictures" here.
