General Software Discussion / Re: Realtime backups
« Last post by tomos on September 04, 2011, 06:13 AM »
I remember being quite impressed with 12ghosts backup - it makes a version every time the file changes, configurable, but keeps some for the long term "one version every hour during one day's time, one version every day for the last month, and finally one version per month for the last year"

I really like that approach, not seen it implemented elsewhere

Filehamster (FH) introduced something like this a while back. They call it DynamicRevisionHistory.
(I dont actually use the feature as I normally wouldnt work on a file that long. With FH I have complete control over when the file gets backed up - so I want all those backups kept.)

DynamicRevisionHistory operates on the assumption that the further back one goes, the less important intermittent revisions become.  Thus, the revision history can be dynamic based on how old a revision is.  All revisions are kept for the time period described in the DynamicRevisionHistoryDelay property.  If this property is set to 72 hours then all revisions within the past 72 hours will be kept.  From there, only the most recent revision for each previous day will be maintained.  Then only one revision for each past week, month and finally year...Eventually, the user will end up with only one revision if that revision is over a year old.

Here are a few of the other options available for manipulating revision histories:
DynamicRevisionHistoryDelay = Indicates when to start thinning revisions based on DynamicRevisionHistory.
MaxRevisions = Specified a maximum number of revisions to keep.
PreserveTimeSpan = Specifies a duration to preserve revisions.

Living Room / Re: Anyone else using Ramdisk in Windows 7?
« Last post by tomos on September 01, 2011, 04:30 PM »
I dunno. I like the idea of not having a pagefile. I have a second internal hd, it's 2TB, so I made a small(ish) partition and gave it a 9GB fixed-size pagefile.
Set it and forget it. I cant go wrong (famous last words lol).
The one time I disabled the page file, I did have some problems with a couple of graphics programmes, that I presume were related to it's absence, so I went back to it. In fairness that was with 2GB ram - now have 8 so could try it again, but it'll be down my list a bit...

as someone who has absolutely no clue, I'm getting mixed messages reading this thread -

  • dont go the expensive server route
  • do use NAS
  • using NAS for serious business is like asking for trouble

if he has the money why shouldnt he get a business solution if it's more dependable?
or does it cost an arm and a leg more?

could you edit your post and write the name of the relevant programme in the topic title?
Better chance of a reply then for you.
thanks!

I created a new grid.  Added some fields to the field list (Tools-Field Properties), Check "shown" (for that grid) and save.  They do not show and the check is gone when I go back into Tools-Field Properties.  This seems odd, as I approached it intuitively.

Should work - I cant reproduce it either, using a clean 'install' of the portable version "V3" (on Win7 64bit)
Saying that, I have had a problem lately with grids occasionally not displaying their fields when opened (i.e. showing just the main item field). I havent yet been able to pin down why this is, and it hasn't happened me now since last week...

Large part of the problem has to be people's (understandable considering financial situation) obsession with getting the cheapest deal possible. So the first thing that gets cut is proper support, leading to the servicewüste (service wasteland).

edit/ that's not directed at anyone here - but a comment on how the system is working, crap wages, >crap discount stores, >crap service(s) but a very big government bureaucracy, now I'm ranting lol :p

General Software Discussion / Re: How can I download or record streaming audio
« Last post by tomos on August 27, 2011, 04:15 PM »
hey mouser,
an embarrassed thanks a lot ;D

I used your link as the source for RadioSure and I able to record (mp3) with that

For the record, I just now tried Url Snooper and it was unable to automatically find network - in spite of the fact that it actually showed the network adapter in the general options page (and appeared to recognise the freshly installed WinPcap).
So I added the link to manually scan a url and I got a different link (which in the browser brought me to a non functioning version - link)

[i know this an old thread but there you go :p]

I'm totally new to this, but wanted to record a particular programme from this station (not the current one but I presume it will be using the same link) - anyone feel like seeing what works with it?
http://www.antenne-k...checks/streaming.php

I've tried the following
Downloaderhelper (FF addon) doesnt recognise anything

Stream Trasnsport plays it but doesnt show any info - I presume that means it's unable to help (?)

Screamer Radio,
RadioSure

dont offer it.
I tried adding it to RadioSure with that link, but it cannot connect.

Media Sniffer is still sniffing without a response...

I'm slow to install Orbit but would do if I knew it worked.
Or something else, but after 5 installs I thought I'd ask for help :)

...and Samsung is banned in Europe:
-fenixproductions (August 24, 2011, 07:47 PM)

actually reads like a win for Samsung

"We have seven weeks, that we really do not need," he said, referring to the time needed to correct the patent issues before Oct. 15. It will be relatively easy to adjust the Galaxy S, S II and Ace so they can be imported and sold in Europe, he said. Samsung does not have to recall any of phones as a consequence of the ruling, he said.

Currently MS is pushing IE9, however when installed, it breaks the native MS Fax printer because of its treatment of preview.js.

breaks functionality in InfoQube as well where it's used for the viewer, and screws up other apps as well I've heard (sorry dont have any more details)

I already use SFFS, but as I said those aren't backup programs.

I'm not sure are you saying Jim that SFFS is not a backup programme (?)
The name "Super Flexible File Synchronizer" is misleading as it is a sync and backup app - I think it does everything important at this stage (monitoring, partial file backup, etc etc.)

Ahh, one of my favorite videos. Funny to see it resurface, I recall it "going viral" a few years back. Great (and amazing) stuff! It's like the owl version of cephalopod mimicry.

- Oshyan

Haha, I can't help but laugh every time i see its 3rd "mask" haha

;D it's hard to believe it's real :tellme:

here's the original, it only gets going about half a minute in, but has some nice sound effects for the various transformations.

there's a long eared owl in Europe that stretches it's body too and points it's ears, but not half as dramatically as this one. Not sure, this one from Canada might be the same bird, or related. Weird thing, it only seems to blink one eye :-)
