Awesome, thanks for sharing that Twinbee! And thanks for taking the time to tell people what worked for you.  It's because of posts like yours that people discover our software

Tomos, I'm not sure exactly what Twinbee was referring to, however with the new "manual" scrolling capture option, SC can stitch together horizontal and vertical content that is not traditionally scrolled.

Because the OS normally doesn't provide low level access to drive hardware to even an administrative user.

It's not just that -- if the malware tampers with the HARD DRIVE FIRMWARE, it can essentially make the hard drive return fake data, etc.  Even with the lowest level access to the hard drive, the hard drive firmware can hide any changes.  The only way to fix would be to reflash the hard drive firmware -- and it may very well be that the firmware changes make reflashing impossible via software.

Fascinating reading.

Living Room / Re: Cell Phone Questions
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2015, 06:22 PM »
Are there phones that can be used only when necessary?  Like if my vehicle dies unexpectedly?

i'm in a similar situation as you, wanting a phone for car for emergencies.

in the usa, there is no good solution for this that i am aware of.

my understanding is this:
1. all cell phones have to be allowed to dial 911 even on bad sim card and no plan -- so for REAL PURE emergency 911 access, yes you can use almost any cell phone and not pay for a plan.
2. but if you hope to be able to call any other number besides 911 you are going to have to expect to pay some kind of yearly fee whether you use your phone or not.
3. there are plans targeted at people who rarely use their phones (like me), but the cheapest i found is something around $100 a year. tmobile has a pay-per-day-your-phone-is-on plan for $3/day, but they still force you to pay a minimum and it ends up being about $100 a year.

nother thing to consider is dust down in the memory slot. Use a can of air to blow out the slot when the RAM is removed to ensure that you're not packing dust back down into the slot during reinsertion.

i agree with possibility of dust, but be VERY careful using compressed air which creates moisture -- i destroyed a power supply blowing compressed air into it.  if you do use a can instead of your mouth, make sure you leave pc unplugged for a while before and after.

Fair enough -- I probably jumped the gun on this one, so I rescind my admonishment.
Though I don't think I share your assessment of the basement as a bad idea -- it does seem to me to still be, on balance, a good solution to a real problem... Though i'm not above some constructive criticism if i'm too quick to move something there.  Generally my basement spider senses start to tingle when I walk into the room and see a whole bunch of horse dust and Renegade sitting in the corner with some baseball bats and a pint of homebrew.. but perhaps on reconsideration, the discussion of vacination wasn't actually too far of the original topic...

And anyone willing to test a debug version and send me bug reports, email me ([email protected]).

Let's see if we can't fix this.

Can anyone who is experiencing this help me narrow down when exactly the problem happens -- is it just when the program starts if the network drive is not yet mapped? Or are we saying it happens in other cases?  It seems certain that the problem is related to the network path not being "available" -- but the question is under what circumstances does the program get confused.

The video game review/commentary blog "Rock, Paper, Shotgun" wrote two three long articles recently on why your next monitor should have an IPS display and 120hz refresh rate.  The articles are written for a gaming audience, but are good reads regardless.

Android Apps / Other app ideas based on WhenLast code
« Last post by mouser on February 11, 2015, 04:34 PM »
My WhenLast app was written so that the code could be re-used for other apps that have similar infrastructure/User-interface/workflow.  Underneath is a pretty flexible library.

So I'm open if people have other ideas that might make use of the code.. With the new sync features, anything that could benefit from multi-device sync would be a good candidate.

One idea i had recently was for a simple checklist/chore app, where you could toggle quickly between an ALL-ITEM view and a TODO view.  So you would switch to the ALL-ITEM view, select a set of chores or todo items to activate, and then switch to the TODO view, where you would see only the items you have selected.  As you (or any sync'd devices) complete each one, you would click it and it would disappear from the TODO view, until you get down to an empty list.  In the ALL-ITEM view you would see when each item was last accomplished (and possibly by which device/user).

As an aside, after playing around with the Genetic Cars again, I was unsatisfied with how some things worked. I saw that the source was available, so I've been referring to it to make something similar in Unity.

Fantastic!  There are few things as enjoyable as writing code that surprises you, and these kinds of experiments can be so enjoyable.

Nice long article with lessons learned from someone starting a collaborative publication, discussing issues from what software to use, to paying contributors, to hiring a lawyer.  Focuses on the business end of things.

I am very hopeful that other intersectional feminist tech publications - possibly many others - will start in the coming year. This blog post is my way of supporting these nascent publications: an offering of everything I've learned about starting and running publishing companies...

Skwire Empire / Re: Release: Arti (Aspect Ratio Tool for Images)
« Last post by mouser on February 10, 2015, 10:19 AM »
The instruction:
In case you are wondering, the formula to calculate the new height of an image based on the existing aspect ratio is height / width * new width.

Is valid.

We can see this (and other related formulas) with some algebra:

For a given height (h) and width (w), we might express the aspect ratio as h/w.

Now imagine we want to construct a new image of height (h2) and width (w2).

If we want these two images to have the same aspect ratio, we can express this by saying that:
h2/w2 = h/w

we can do some simple algebra of multiplying both sides by same values to yield new expressions:
h2 = (h/w)*w2
or
w2 = (w/h)*h2
