Living Room / Re: Google Search
« Last post by Deozaan on May 18, 2010, 12:17 AM »
If they already have a large database of searches indexed, why can't they just search all results of the case insensitive index for the matching case sensitive search?

I still don't get what the problem is. Especially as an advanced search option that is disabled by default. I wouldn't mind if it went a bit slower.

Living Room / Google Search

Did you know that Google handles all searches as if they were performed with lower case letters? In other words, Google searches are case insensitive.

This means that searching for an editor called "StarED" gives results about staring, or being stared at. I can understand why Google would do this by default, but even their "Advanced Search" lacks the option to match case.

Okay, so I admit that I've been using the Google Search Engine for years and never had this issue affect me before, but... how the smurf can they not think this would be useful or even required in some cases?

Just tried it in Windows 7. It told me that since I was running it in Vista I needed to completely disable UAC to run the application, then shut itself down.

Instead I chose to "Run As Administrator" and that got me into it. But after placing a few tiles down and clicking a button which I think was to test out my level the program brought up a progress bar which didn't seem to do anything, and after a couple minutes I had to "End Task" since the application was eating up 97% of my CPU and not responding.

Apparently there's an FPS Creator X10 made for Windows Vista/7 and DirectX 10 which costs $70 and has no free edition. It appears as though there's no trial/demo mode either.

I'm not sure if this would work, but what about some sort of money pledge pool. Sort of like those fundraisers where people pledge $0.50 (or whatever amount) per mile someone runs and then they collect the money after they've done the running.

This kind of reverses it so that the reward comes after the work is done, which may not be what you're intending with this idea.

The game is only 3-4 hours long? :(

If you already know the solution to all the puzzles and everything, sure. Depending on your skill level and other factors (like if you get stumped on a puzzle for a while), I'd guess a more casual first-time playthrough could take up to six or seven hours.

The game stands very well on its own two feet and doesn't feel short to me. It seems to me like reading a book or watching a movie. One with a fun story that nicely wraps everything up but leaves a hint of a possible sequel (which has since been announced).

The beauty of it being so relatively short is that when, a couple of months later you're reminiscing about how cool the game was, you can play the entire story in an afternoon to get a nice refresher on it.

In contrast, I loved Final Fantasy 7 on the Playstation 1, but after investing probably over 150 hours into it, I doubt I'm ever going to play it again, even though it's one of my favorite RPGs of all time and I'd like to play it again.

And really, for free, it's not like you're not getting your money's worth. If you don't like it just uninstall the entire Steam client and be done with it. No money invested, only a few hours lost, and you're done and know better. If you do like it, then you've been given what may be one of your favorite games for free. The potential cons/risks are extremely low and the potential benefits are fairly high. There's really no reason not to give it a try.

Maybe Apple "leaked" a fake on purpose this time to discredit the original story. :-\

Better create your Steam account now and take advantage of the Portal Giveaway while it lasts.

Of course, as can be seen from the just-launched Mac version of Steam, just because the Steam platform runs on Mac doesn't mean all the games available on Steam do. I imagine that it will be similar with Linux.

Still, with Portal being (IMO) one of the best PC games ever, there's no reason not to take advantage of the giveaway, on the off chance you'll ever be in a position to play it.

And by the way, you can run Steam right now in Linux using WINE/PlayOnLinux, though I haven't tested it so I don't know how well it works. Undoubtedly the made-for-Linux application will run a lot better than the WINE version.

After reading that article I was left confused as to whether the phone itself was a fake or just the part that it could supposedly run OS4 was false/fake.

In other words, the OS was photoshopped on, but is the hardware a fake? The article wasn't really clear about that.

@IanB: I'm not offering the bumper stickers. I was a lucky recipient of one that I received for free on the condition that I put it on my car and post a picture of it on this site.

My car is an old clunker made in 1992. It's falling apart at the seams, but it gets pretty good gas mileage. I also love being able to park in small places or turn around almost anywhere.

So can the 'pirate' issue some sort of copyright violation takedown order?  :D

You make a good point. Isn't what they did breaking some sort of anti-reverse engineer/copy-protection-avoiding laws?

I'm making good on my promise to post a picture of the sticker on my car... two years later.

Count me as among those who didn't realize copy machines had a hard drive in them. Scary indeed!

Though I'm left wondering how prevalent that is. Would, for instance, my little HP All-In-One home printer also have a hard drive in it? How about my Brother MFC-7840W?

Or is this just a "feature" of "commercial-grade" copiers?

That is, unless I can't find it by the time I want to play it. :)

That's happened to me a couple of times. Most notably for Gene Wars and RPG Maker 3.

For Gene Wars I had played the demo and a couple years later tried to find it and it was gone. A couple years ago I managed to find it on eBay but I could never get the thing to work in DOSBox. I can't remember if it had some sort of copy protection (i.e. paragraph 2, line 4, word 6 of page 32 in the manual) or if it just didn't work.

And RPG Maker 3 was brand new in the store when I saw it and about two months later I had the money to buy it and it was permanently out of stock everywhere. Instant collector's item, I guess.

But this thread is starting to get way off topic now...

And then there are people like me who downloaded both Windows and Linux versions, so my contribution counted toward both, which might skew the numbers a bit in Linux's favor. Or it might not. :-[

I thought it was the little survey on your key page that determined where you fell statistically.

Yes, but the survey page allowed you to select more than one platform. I chose both Windows and Linux, since those are the platforms I was downloading for.

But think of all the money you would have saved if you had played what you already own.

Not really, you only delay the inevitable ;D

Not necessarily. If I had spent my time playing what I already owned instead of buying a new game, then by the time I finished the games I already owned, the "new" ones would no longer be new and would likely be greatly reduced in price. Maybe even available on a $5 or $10 Steam sale instead of $30 or $40.

Time is slowly teaching me that being an Early Adopter with paid software/hardware usually means you get the short straw. In the case of PC games, a lot of them need serious bug patching for the first few weeks/months and are $50-$60. In the case of gaming consoles, usually in a year or two a newer model comes out with better features (though sometimes features are removed, as was the case with the PS3's backwards compatibility) and there's a price drop.

If I had purchased all my games for $30 or less instead of buying them new for $50 for the past 10 years, I'd have had hundreds of dollars to spend on other games or other things. And that's even if I had bought all the games I already own. It would have just cost less total because I'd have waited for the price to go down due to playing my games to the end.

Not that the current trends should necessarily affect any individual's decision, but I found this article interesting:

Android phones may be outselling the iPhone in the US for the first time, according to new NPD data. In the first quarter of the year, Google-based phones like the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris helped bump Android up to 28 percent of the market where Apple's phone mustered just 21 percent. RIM's BlackBerries were relatively safe but dropped to 36 percent, down 6 percent.

Apparently Apple is in 3rd place when it comes to SmartPhone OS usage.

And I also recently found out that iPhones are good for something after all: Android has been ported to the iPhone.

Full Disclosure: I have an Android phone which I love (I've never liked cell phones until I got my G1) and I despise Apple. I tried to be diplomatic about it in the beginning of this post but gave in at the end. I'm not sorry! ;)
6596
seems like a pretty good middle of the road solution to me.

Well now that you've explained it, I agree with you. It does indeed seem like a good compromise.

I guess my list of unplayed/hardly played games has grown since I've gotten Steam, what with their frequent sales.

There are only two games in my list that I haven't played at all since I bought them--Overlord 2 and Half Life 2: Episode 1--but that's because I was waiting until I finished the Overlord 1 and replayed Half Life 2 before moving on to the sequels.

I did make it through HL2 again without yet moving on to Episode 1, but I have not completed Overlord 1, and it's one of those games that I may never do so, simply because "I've moved on" since then. Not that the game was bad or anything.

Anyway, p3lb0x has a point. I often think to myself I shouldn't buy any more games until I finish all the ones I've purchased, but then comes along another Steam sale and something I've had my eye on (for years, perhaps) is only $5 and I can't resist buying it. Especially if it is multiplayer and I have a friend or family member who is also getting it.
6598
I haven't tried it yet, so maybe I'm misunderstanding how it works, but I just keep getting this nagging concern that one day there will be a big fuss about the "no ads" part. Especially if you charge money for it. It just seems to me that the game developers aren't going to like having their games removed from the ad content that supports their development.

This is getting some press.

It's reported in the Globe & Mail newspaper in Canada.
Apparently, in three days:
  • over 50,000 responses
  • nearly $US 500,000 received
  • Linux users paid the most
  • Windows users paid the least
  • Mac in the middle
-cranioscopical (May 09, 2010, 10:11 AM)

While it is true that Windows users paid the least on average, over half of the $614,230 "donated" has been from Windows users. Linux is about 25%, and Mac is somewhere between 20-25%.

And then there are people like me who downloaded both Windows and Linux versions, so my contribution counted toward both, which might skew the numbers a bit in Linux's favor. Or it might not. :-[
