What's up with this? Thread dead already? :-)

No, I was giving mouser a bit to reply.  But I guess he really does want out, so I'll move it along.  With his contribution, there's actually enough for us to go around twice, so everyone gets two gifts :)

We've seen flash mobs dancing before, but this is just absolutely breathtaking....

Thank you. :)

Without an actual link to something newsworthy (like the privacy policy in the other row), I'm not sure this isn't anything other than something to get people up in arms.  Is there a link to some smoking gun from facebook?

Community Giveaways / DonationCoder Digital White Elephant Thread
« Last post by wraith808 on December 24, 2012, 05:37 PM »
I postponed the start a bit hoping to get a few more people involved, but I think with this being Christmas Eve, it's as good a time as any to start!

Reposting the Rules
1. Order will be determined randomly, and posted.
2. There is a maximum of one day for a move.
3. On your turn, you can choose to either (a) choose a gift from the pile, or (b) take an already opened gift.
4. If you choose a gift from the pile, it is chosen randomly, and revealed to all.
5. If you choose to take a gift from a person, that person immediately gets to choose to take an already opened gift (not the one just taken), or take a gift from the pile.
6. Each gift can only change hands twice.

After one time around, if the first person has never had his or her gift taken, they may choose to trade their gift for someone else's.

We can start anytime, but I'm not starting the timer on the expiration of turn until the 26th. :)

Not saying that there's not as big a market, but if your revenues start depending on upgrades, then lifetime licenses wouldn't be sustainable.  that's my point...

Markets change, and needs change.  The market is considerably different than it was 12 years ago, and the pool of potential buyers is different also.  That's just basic economics, I think.

Yes, it appears to be PR spin at the backlash.  And I'd take his words at face value, i.e. until they go through the approval process and they get a stamp of approval, don't count on it.

It does appear to be a cool device... not only charge all devices with the same device, but have backup power too?  Nice concept.

Living Room / Re: Patent Silliness to affect Crowdfunding?
« Last post by wraith808 on December 21, 2012, 03:08 PM »
nd seriously, why should one Kickstarter project cost more to list than another? Kickstarter's costs should be mostly fixed and predictable by now. They could charge a flat fee and still make money.

As usual, the smart 40 cuts through the BS to the meat of the argument.  And really scores with the above.

Living Room / Patent Silliness to affect Crowdfunding?
« Last post by wraith808 on December 21, 2012, 10:34 AM »
FormLabs created a Kickstarter for FORM1 - a professional 3D Printer, to pretty amazing success- to the tune of 3 million+ dollars and 2000+ backers.  The FORM1 is an affordable 3D printer, and now 3D Systems has taken to making sure that an affordable one isn't available, filing suit because "3D Systems believes the Form 1 3D printer infringes at least one of our patents, and we intend to enforce our patent rights" on Stereolithography. (ref via Globenewswire)

They have named Kickstarter as a defendant in their filing, for their role in facilitating the record setting “sales” of the Formlabs Form 1. (ref via Wired)

This promises to be very interesting- I hope that the judge at least throws out the part against Kickstarter very soon, or it could affect the face of crowdfunding very negatively.

Living Room / Ramifications of 3-D Printers for Customer Service
« Last post by wraith808 on December 21, 2012, 10:19 AM »
Will customer service phone lines be replaced with at home 3-D printers that can print replacement parts and upgrades?

That's the question asked at the end of an article on how a 3D-printed adapter rescued a threatened iPhone dock. (via Wired).

The Elevation Dock for the iPhone is a classic Kickstarter story. An indie designer develops a better mouse trap, raises $1.4 million, and of course, delivers the product to backers, very, very late. These delays created a serious problem when they overlapped with Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5 and its new Lightning connector.

<snip />

Unlike most backers, Hellers saw the incompatibility between his gadgets as a challenge instead of an inconvenience. He opened up Tinkercad, a web-based 3D-modeling program, fired up his MakerBot, and got busy designing an adapter. He says, “Designing the adapter was fairly straightforward and quick. I printed four or five iterations … since it is such a small piece. The printing of those revisions was very quick, only a couple of minutes each time.” He posted his design to Thingiverse, set up a Shapeways shop for those without access to a 3D printer, and helped 12,521 downloaders bring their products back to life.

More at the link, but the more interesting one is the one posed at the end of the article.  I find the article interesting not so much for this case as for the use case.
