Judging by some of the articles I read over Xmas about Win8 sales it looks like MS is having some problems convincing anyone this is more than another Vista fiasco.

There's some other improvements over windows 7, and those are sadly overlooked because of the start menu thing.  And that's not that big a deal- a lot of people are lumping the whole of the OS in with Metro, and that's sad and short sighted.  I remember when Windows 95 first came out and people did the same thing about the start menu.  But Bill Gates was at the helm then, and say what you might about him, they navigated those waters well.  Some good articles on what else has changed and why it's such an improvement: (especially check out sandboxing, the changes to memory use, and DEP/EMET (which f0dder has talked about before))

http://arstechnica.c...e-hood-of-windows-8/

http://www.extremete...grade-from-windows-7

Personally, I think they should have taken a more measured approach, and put in the ability to restore a version of the classic start menu and boot directly to the desktop.  Not that I would use them necessarily- but for those that are resistant, this pretty much removes the complaints.  Then, over time, as they start to deprecate the start menu, it won't be such a shock to the system.  They've already made changes over time to it before, and left the old functionality available for a time.  Why they didn't do that here, I don't know.

Some links for you Carol :)

http://www.7tutorial...-8-skip-start-screen

http://www.techrepub...-to-the-desktop/6976

Also, from comments on article: http://www.ghacks.ne...e-windows-8-desktop/

The simple reg hack still work for me:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogin

You’ll see a key called Shell.
By default, it is set to “explorer.exe”.

Change the value to “explorer.exe /select,explorer.exe”
(no quotes)

Works for me on the “activated” RTM Enterprise.
Start Menu flashes for a split second…then Desktop.

I've also heard that Classic Shell allows you to boot to the desktop.

Caveat: I've not tried any of these techniques (don't have Windows 8 yet), so I can't testify to the veracity of any of these solutions.

Actually a good option that I've found (though you have to pay for it) is JetBrains WebStorm.  I have PhpStorm (which encapsulates all of what you want + PHP), but it's great.

I'm still trying to fathom the logic in skipping directly to a Start Button-less desktop just to have to go back to the thing you bypassed to get what you wanted. Are people really that enamored with their wallpaper?

Because some people have changed their desktop to have a start button and a start menu that looks like windows 7 and prior.  Not saying anything one way or another about the choice- but it is their choice and I don't see anything wrong with letting them do it.

Ah... I see.  Yeah, I was in the same boat- I think that the companies still haven't realized how those GOTY packages have pissed off customers because it screws the early adopters in more ways than one. (especially since it can end up that you have to pay more for an expansion later than someone does for that expansion, all the others, and the base game!)

I was waiting on Skyrim for that reason- but a really good deal hit and I got it for $20.  And its one of the few (Dishonored being another recent game that falls into that category) that I don't mind the expense because of the sheer time and enjoyment I've gotten from it.

No... I'd not want to go that way.  It's an even split by counts.  So... (drumroll)

4wd: Orcs Must Die 2- complete
e.gingerich: Worms Revolution & Worms Revolution Season Pass
Deozaan: Titan Quest

And all 3 get a copy of Booster Trooper

All three of you PM me your Steam Names (and c.gingerich PM me your e-mail address and whether you want tiles or fences).  If you three want to contact each other directly to exchange your personal gifts, then that will work also- let me know if you haven't heard from the other party by the end of the week.

@Deozaan:

Totally agreed with Shades.  It's singlehandedly responsible for me not playing pretty much *anything* else.  I get on MMOs every once in a while (since I'm paying a subscription) and Dishonored managed to get me off of it for a week.  But other than that- it's been Skyrim, to the tune of over 350 hours.  And when you can play 300 hours, and not finish, and still manage to discover new places, people, and things in the base story- that tells you something.

PS. You're a psychiatrist aren't you?

No... a programmer.  I just need a psychiatrist.  And if I was, then I'd have done the three way prisoner's dilemma.

a) choose give, split, or take it all.
b) if one person chooses take it all- they get everything.
c) if more than one person chooses take it all, and the other chooses anything else, that person gets everything.
d) if everyone chooses give, then everyone gets something... and a bonus.
e) if one or two people choose give and the other(s) split, then the split is between those that chose split.
f) If everyone chooses take it all, no one gets anything.
g) any non-covered arrangement is an even split.

Now *that* would be interesting to watch  ;D

But this way, no one knows what anyone else chose, unless everyone chooses split. :)

This is kind of one of the reasons that I tend to just "Submit" an application rather than try to promise one... I'm always scared that something will suck up my time and stop me from releasing, and I'll end up with vapourware, and very embarassed.

I feel obligated to +1 this as that is precisely what I did ths trip.

This is pretty much the reason I have a release- the thing that I didn't intend was nearly done when I pledged, so its done.  The thing that I pledged is nearly done now, so it won't be. :(
6538
I totally agree on Scrivener.  I love it for organized projects (books, etc).  But for general note taking?  Just too heavy and not what I really view it for.
6539
Yeah... I got the one done... but the other I still have a bit to finish :)  Holidays call for procrastination!

And with Deo's response, we'll call it done.  That said, there's only the drawing for the final prize left under the Digital Virtual Christmas Tree.  But since there's so few people, there's a wrinkle- there's actually four individual prizes in the big prize, so we're going to play a game. :)  Each participant send me a PM with the words 'split' or 'giveaway'.  If everyone says split, I'll randomly split the prizes among you (each getting at least one).  If any person says giveaway, then I'll draw for one of you three to take it all.  Let me know by tomorrow.  (I was going to do a three-way prisoner's dilemma... but decided not to  ;D)

NANY 2013 Entry Information

Application NameSkyrim Character Manager
Short DescriptionManage the save files for multiple characters in Skyrim
Supported OSesWindows XP/Vista/7
Web Pagehttp://thinkshui.net...m-character-manager/
Setup FilePortable - Installer
DescriptionSkryim is another great game by Bethesda – a worthy addition to The Elder Scrolls line. There are some problems with AI, and scaling at higher levels, but all of that is minor in relation to the sense of atmosphere and immersion the story line brings. But the one area that I think they fell short on was the ability to play multiple characters. And this is a game that cries out for multiple playthroughs.

Enter the Skyrim Character Manager. It’s made for one thing- to help manage the save files for multiple characters. It also holds additional information as wanted for the different characters as I do like a bit more role-playing in my role-playing games.
Features
  • Backed by a database that holds fluff information about each character
  • Allows the moving of save files from active to inactive directories
  • Allows files to be backed up
  • Links to run Skyrim, and visit popular sites
  • Provides interface to delete save files
ScreenshotsSkryimCharacterManager.png
InstallationWith .NET 4.0 installed, unzip application to location and run.
UninstallingDelete application install location.
NotesRequires .NET 4.0.

So... everything is given out and all presents are opened :)  With everything opened, let's go around one more time with everyone saying if they're happy with their gifts - or want to nick anyone else's (I'm the only bad person!)  Once we've done that, we'll have the final drawing for the big gift still under the tree :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Good coding conventions - Discussion
« Last post by wraith808 on December 30, 2012, 10:30 PM »
In Visual Studio with C# you can add comment documentation above a method very easily by using 3 slashes:

///

That depends on which version of VS you're using. For some reason three slashes will break your code in VS2005 (yes I still use it frequently). But I (am nutz and still) primarily work in pure Win32 API C++

Maybe it's the Win32 API C++?  Because the /// convention works for me in VS2005, and I've been using them religiously.  I didn't pay attention to the C++ code- it's mostly get in and get out without making a mess.

another +1 on what renegade said.  But in the end, I think it's a matter of audience and consistency when dealing with any project rather than slavish attention to anyone else's rules.

Other than I hate the rule we have at work with no underscores!  so private variables are thisIsAProperty and public ones are ThisIsAProperty.  I know they did it because we should be using autoimplemented properties now... but in some cases you can't and that rule sucks!
