LOL Good Fun

Reminds me of a Candid Camera sequence many years ago ... members of the public came into a cafe - the plastic teaspoons supplied with cups of tea and coffee looked and felt perfectly normal but dissolved in hot liquid ... you can imagine the rest. I'd guess these days the cafe would be facing a lawsuit!

A review/recommended list of windows programming tutorials would be useful too. I know you can finds lots of stuff via google but it would be useful to have  programmer recommended tutorials categorised by eg. newbie, novice, intermediate, advanced, guru, god etc. for each language that has easily available (free or cheap) compilers and development environments.

Add to that any tutorial books / third party manuals / primers people find really useful.

Have you checked the PS manual. I have PS 7 and there is a whole section on colour management for web graphics and it covers specifics individually for JPEG, GIF and PNG fornats. In the PS 7 manual it is in the chapter  14 "Preparing graphics for the web" and includes sections such as "Optimizing colors in GIF and PNG-8 images" and "Using masks to modify dithering"

If you have the online manual installed (and no paper manual) do a search on the chapter title and it should all pop up on screen.

There is even an "Optimize palette" in ImageReady.

I'm sure you can acheive what you want in native PS but if not there must be plugins available to acheive what you want.

I haven't got PS installed at the moment so I can't play with the options but I'm sure there is the option to save a user palette with GIF files as well as the web-palette option.

How about PhotoGif which I found here Free Photoshop Plugins which has a really useful collection of freebies and commercial plugins. Unfortunately it isn't free ($30) but it does have a demo so you can at least see if it does what you want.

Should this be a surprise? Given the amount of 'advertising' on the internet theses days (and the depths that some of these 'advertisers' will plumb) I would be very surprised if any possible method is not being exploited openly and covertly.

Add to that the large web-factions that have gotten 'religion' when it comes to browser wars, operating system, platform etc. then almost anything printed on a webpage should be taken with a pinch of salt!

I'd be very surprised if there is anything that can do much more than a full version of PhotoShop/ImageReady.

Why limit yourself to 256 colour palette in PS ? Do what you want in a full colour palette (PSD files) and then use PS tools (eg. Save for web) to render the GIF files with a custom palette - this should give a pretty accurate 256 colour version of the image without limiting your subsequent editing of the original PSD file.

I have championed Xara here before - if you haven't looked it is brilliant and certainly rivals/matches much more expensive alternatives. It is much more aimed at 'illustration' (path based) art than pixel based editing but there is a new pixel based editor built into the latest version, and it is excellent for building animations. Check out www.xara.com for details and if you need some help check out the demo/tutorial movies.

By the way I really like Xara Webstyle too for producing quick webpage templates and layouts. Not great for whole sites but for the odd group of pages it gives nice results. Also allows you to build JS menus and rollover buttons etc.

Xara does free demos of all its software.

Has anyone tried VCHM (Visual CHM)? Roundabout $20.00 in price, and extremely simple to use, or at least I thought so. The folks whom produce this app reside in Asia, and I could not seem to get to their site as of the date I post this, which hopefully doesn't make this post meaningless =/

At any rate, here's another URL: http://www.wekasoft.com/vchm/
-Mikes Software Co (October 11, 2005, 07:36 AM)

Seems to work now - actually there are some interesting bits on that site - and the software is "cheap as chips" ...

Visual CHM looks interesting and at that price probably worth buying if you want to build help systems, documentation or just want to compile lots of useful stuff from the web into a compact and portable format.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Fewer system tray icons?

http://www.xdesksoft...re.com/systrayx.html

I have been using this for a while now and have found it very useful - doesn't seem buggy or anything to me just solid stuff - also allows you to manage auto start items neatly and has a configurable interface (including hot key assignment). Well worth a look.

Here are some screen shots (click on the screenshot to see full size version and then use the browser back button to return here) ...

A single icon is added to the tray bar (which can be made invisible too and accessed via a hotkey instead). The tray icon menu looks something like:

traymenu.png

but note that all the items in there can be made visible/invisible and they work exactly as the original tray icons would have worked. You can also manage which icons appear in the main tray or in this menu version.

Here are the settings options for the application:

If you are interested in Earth Science and/or life on other planets there are some interesting lectures to watch (use QuickTime) on this European Space Agency site: http://streamiss.spaceflight.esa.int/

In particular I really enjoyed "Strategies to Search for life on Mars" at http://streamiss.spa...on&PID=slonw2005

(incidentally I couldn't get streambox VCR to download the video using the URLs supplied by URL Snooper)

Living Room / Re: topview recorder or media center pc
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 26, 2006, 03:00 AM »
Never used a media centre pc, but I have tried using software on normal windows that is supposed to allow hard disc recording etc. and am not too impressed.

If you keep the system really (and I mean really) clean then my experience is that Windows based PC recorders seem to work OK, but not as good as dedicated HD recorders. For me the picture quality on normal TV is just not good enough - can't imagine how well it would work with HD-TV in the future.

The biggest problem I have had is that if you use the system for any other purpose I get frames dropped, codec clashes and generally very poor performance from DVR which makes it pretty unuseable for anything important to me.

I'm sure WMC works better as it has more standard components to do the job, and some of my problems may come from using an ATI Radeo All-in-Wonder card but I still wouldn't trust a PC at the moment to be the only method of doing this sort of recording.

There are some really nice DVD-VR and DVD-RW recorders out there with very large hard discs and great quality - have a look at Pioneer's range for instance - which are cheaper and excellent quality. Check out what's on www.webelectricals.co.uk and www.hifibitz.co.uk.

I have a JVC DVD recorder (without hard disc) which I am now pleaseded with (they swapped the box after a lot of problems with my particular model and it now works fine). The DVD picture quality is excellent and surround sound support is good.

If I had £1000 I could spend on this personally I would buy the best home cinema surround sound system with the facilities you want - I think it would deliver much better quality than any PC is capable of yet.

For the moment the whole area is in such a state of flux, and price freefall, I would go for something cheap and cheerful that does the job, and wait until some of the new HD-DVD/Blu-Ray systems appear down the line.

The odd thing is they seem to be registered under different names in different countries ??

Using various WHOIS type services these are  the details - anyone know what is going on?

www.win-rar.com:

Registrant Name: Burak Canboy

Registrant City: Bremen
Registrant Postal Code: 28219

www.rarlabs.com:

www.winrar.com:

I can't get the winrar.com address to work - it doesn't seem to be registered with a DNS server though the domain name is currently active.

It is a link to the ShareIt webstore - I wouldn't have thought ShareIt would be interested if it wasn't genuine.

The links came from UniBlue (formerly LI Utilities) that produce WinTasks Pro and they seem like a good bunch. Presumably UniBlue are acting as a distributor for RARLabs these days.

Note the original email offer from UniBlue was distributed by DigitalRiver.

One of the nice things JGSoft are doing too is making all their products instable on removable discs (like pens and CompactFlash etc). Just got an email about RegexBuddy, and apparently you can already do this with EditPad Pro (except for spell checking which will come soon). Neat solution and leaves no trace on the system you are using once the media is removed.

Glad to see them catching up with Mouser ;)
