Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« Last post by Deozaan on June 01, 2010, 04:57 PM »
I've recently started reading 12 Steps to Whole Foods by Robyn Openshaw. Apparently it's a course manual so you won't find it on Amazon.com or at your local Barnes & Noble.

I've got the digital version ($40), but if you have to have the paper version, you can also buy the printed manual ($80). Though at that price it might be cheaper to buy the digital version and just print off the pages yourself or take it to a copy shop to get it printed and bound.

Basically the book gives information and steps to get your diet to about 60-80% raw foods with an emphasis on the other 40-20% being mostly whole foods.

It's an education you'd have to read 20+ books to obtain, with over 175 recipes, fully indexed so you can look up recipes that use ingredients you have on hand. Each step has time- and money-saving tips. The intro and appendices give lots of info about getting kids and spouses on board, learning what's true and false in nutrition, understanding kitchen tools and high-nutrition ingredients (and where to get them), and so much more.

The book is aimed at that group of people who say, "I'd like to eat healthier, but I just don't know how." It doesn't just tell you what to eat, it tells you why. And not only that, it tells you how. I'm on chapter 5 and it has had several recipes per chapter so you know how to incorporate that next step in your diet.

The first few steps are:

Month 1. Drink a Green smoothie every day. (about 15 servings of fruits and vegetables per quart, IIRC)
Month 2. Eat a salad every day. If you normally eat a big meat portion for dinner, swap the sizes. Eat a big salad portion and a small meat portion. Then your normally sized prepared meat will last you for two meals and save you money.
Month 3. Make homemade salad dressings for your salads, that don't have the bad stuff in them from store bought dressings.
Month 4. Enjoy good fats, avoid bad fats. (i.e. replace bad fats with good fats).

To be clear: this isn't a diet plan. When you move on to step (month) 2, you don't discontinue step 1. Each step builds on the last, allowing you to change your dietary habits for life over the course of a year. Of course, you can go faster or slower if you want. That's up to you.

It's pretty cool because the chapters encourage you to write in a health journal so you can record and review any changes in your health you've noticed from the new diet, recipes you really liked, etc. In that sense it really is more like a workbook or a manual than just a book for reading.

My wife and I have been trying to have green smoothies lately after my sister introduced us to them, but our blender just wasn't cutting it (literally) so we ordered a nice (and expensive!) Blendtech and got this (digital) book free. I think we're going to just jump right in and start the first 5-6 steps almost all at once (step 1 has to wait for a few days until the Blendtech arrives) since step 5 is about growing your own produce in a garden and the growing season is already upon us.

« Last post by Deozaan on June 01, 2010, 02:11 PM »
Simple solution: Put a Splice icon in the toolbars (on the side with the others) that has default smart behavior that splices depending on selected area's dimensions. Then put Splice Horizontally and Splice Vertically in the SpecialFX dropdown menu for those rare times when you need to splice a large section from a narrow or short image.

IF you can compile your own programs in order to get the latest versions. Etc.
Huh? My programs are updated automatically after giving permission, or I can update my entire desktop environment with about four clicks or a simple command. Never compiled a program in my life. Never will.

My first experience with Linux (which was Ubuntu) on my own computer (netbook) I had to find, download, compile, and run some funky commands to get the machine to use my wifi drivers. And every time the kernel was updated I had to run those funky commands again, or compile it all again if I deleted the compiled drivers. Thankfully in recent versions of Ubuntu this is no longer necessary, but it was all very frustrating and confusing for a brand new Linux user.

And like you said, drivers in Windows are usually never a problem with modern hardware. If you're trying to use some hardware that was made during the earlier Windows XP years then you might have problems finding 64-bit drivers. I can't use my onboard ethernet adapter for this very reason*, but my wifi adapter works great! I don't even need to find the driver for wifi anymore; that's all taken care of by Windows Update.

*Actually I would be able to use my onboard ethernet adapter if the driver didn't need to be signed. I found a driver for it but it's not signed, so Windows 7 won't let me install it.

Living Room / Re: How to Sell Linux to Schools
« Last post by Deozaan on June 01, 2010, 01:03 PM »
Apparently this article is a "guest post" by Darlene Parker.

The Distro

In my personal experience there are 2 distros that stand out in the Educational sector.  Edubuntu and KDE I have deployed these 2 distros globally with great success.

I'm a linux noob and even I know that KDE isn't a distro.

First of all, it is a matter of migrating schools to Linux, not selling them.

To me this seems like the wrong approach. Why all or nothing? Why not introduce Linux as an excellent operating system that students can do all kinds of cool things on?

Even though I agree with you, I thought she explained why it has to be the "All or Nothing" approach fairly well with this statement (bolded for emphasis):

All or Nothing Approach for Computer Real Estate

  • While subscription licensing usually has the lowest cost of entry of the various Microsoft licensing options, it is an “all or nothing” approach which can have the effect of requiring schools to pay Microsoft licences fees for computers that aren’t actually running any of Microsoft’s software. This is because the subscription licensing cost is based on the total number of computers in the school. This has meant that if a school is using Microsoft’s subscription licensing, fees need to be paid to Microsoft for Apple Mac or Linux computers, and indeed those computers running OpenOffice.org.
  • Additionally, even when many of the school’s computers could not run Microsoft Vista schools would still have been required to include those systems in their Microsoft licence count and pay the appropriate licence fees

It seems as though if Microsoft didn't have "no compete" clauses in their license then it would be perfect to have a nice mix. But for schools to get "their money's worth" they are compelled to put Windows on every machine.

I took a programming class (in college) and we ran Redhat Linux in a virtual machine on Windows for that class. I didn't think much of it at the time, but maybe it's because of the licensing for those PCs. Of course, the school does have Linux clusters and even some Linux only PCs in the computer labs. So maybe it was just a more practical decision than anything else.

I downloaded this within the past month so that I could run a 16-bit game made for Windows 95 that doesn't run on 64-bit Windows. The game runs, but unfortunately it has performance problems while performing simple operations like click the mouse or dragging something from one place to another, so I end up getting frustrated real quick and don't play the game anyway. :(

I wonder if VMWare would have the same issues. . .  :-\

Living Room / Re: Does DRM Kill the End of a Movie??!?
« Last post by Deozaan on May 31, 2010, 11:02 AM »
I'd guess it's a DVD9 error before thinking it was DRM. As Carol said, DVD9s are dual layer DVDs so when they switch from one layer to another (usually after the halfway point of a movie) there can sometime be a short pause during the transition. If your particular built-in DVD player can't handle the transition to the second layer, it would just hang.

Have you tried playing any DVD9s that you know have no DRM to see if they also hang during the layer switch?

I bought Sins at this sale price and I am waiting for the expansions to go on sale later. They would just be sitting unused while I played through the main game anyways.

There is no "main" game. Sins has absolutely no campaign/story mode. It's purely solo skirmishes or multiplayer.

That's not how the expansions work. They simply add functionality and features to the main game, making the whole thing (much) better. At no point would you not be playing the expansions if you have them installed.

I believe you can actually play without the expansions even if you have them installed. A time when you might want to do this is, for instance, if you wanted to play a match with other players who didn't have the expansion(s).

Or if someone has Entrenchment but not Diplomacy, you can just play without the Diplomacy expansion by running Entrenchment and then you can play together.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Pledge: Mouser App
« Last post by Deozaan on May 29, 2010, 05:06 PM »
Judging by the name I'm guessing it's going to be app's idea:

app: i am thinking of creating a companion for instant boss...instant mouser
mouser: :/
app: you run it and it ignores you

Except mouser, following his long standing tradition of giving his applications generic and weird names will just call it "Mouser App."

hm, something going on here.....

Some how superboyac taunts 40hz with his avatar on the 26th.....

After 3 days time CleverCat has a new ride.

And now 40hz has his avatar back.

As payment for being the middle man,
superboyac now has a huge 40hz avatar.

Interesting huh!!??  :) :) :)

Either that train of thought was derailed or it took the wrong switch. Would you mind posting directions? I can't follow that logic.

EDIT: If what I said confuses you, then GOOD! We're even! :P

Hey that's weird. You can buy all 3 of them in the Trinity bundle for $40 or you can buy them separately for $24.

Sins: $4
Entrenchment: $10
Diplomacy: $10

Trinity (all 3 above): $40

EDIT: Actually it's cheaper (by a few cents) if you buy the Expansion bundle (Entrenchment+Diplomacy) for $19.95 instead of getting them separately for 9.99+9.99 = 19.98.

Crap, now I really hate not having a credit card. I love this game!

If you are able to give me the money via donationcredits or PayPal then I'd be happy to make the purchase(s) for you. (But I guess you could buy it from PayPal yourself on Impulse.)

Careful to obey all traffic laws!

I've watched a few videos and I still can't tell what the purpose of the game is. I just see a guy running around really fast shooting at trees. It looks like a very pretty, large, empty world. And that hard-rock techno music on the videos is just annoying and doesn't seem to fit the style/theme of the game.

Considering I've never heard of it before and after watching videos and looking at the website I still can't tell what it's about, I think I'll pass.

ok what is the trick for moving it out of "my personal area" and into the other section or can you do that for me?

iirc this has been asked previously but i don't think there is a way to move it out. you'll have to copy and paste the text. :)

Or ask a forum moderator (like mouser) to move it for you.
6542
Did you try it out? The website says it's the German language. Is there an option for other languages, like English? I still have some non-Windows 7 PCs this thing could work on.

i didn't try it because i have no Blu-ray drive.

From my understanding (the logos on the picture in your original post) the Blu-Ray version of Alcohol 120% also handles DVDs and CDs as well.
6543
Do you know some flash games that would works that way ? Exploration games, like 'Universe' could benefit from that, but I don't know of any games that play that way.

I don't play a lot of Flash games, so I don't know of any specific ones that don't scale besides Final-Ninja, and a few experiments I did in Flash where a larger screen meant more stuff to show.

For example, here's a game I made a few years ago: Deozone

If you resize your browser window, the game will dynamically adjust to give you more (or less) space in which to see things.
