I don't know how much recruiters hunt for personal information in other countries or HR/Peers use the personal  stuff posted on FB or Tweet in their favor, but here in this part of the world keeping office folks away from FB/Twitter account does help. Other than that people try to put you in box -religious/political. If you're not dancing on their tunes then you're pretty much socially fooked up. So far i have managed to keep social life- ' offline and online' separate. I had trouble with that in past so i prefer to keep things anonymous. I do have few places where i use my real name+URL(like DC) but 99% these are the safe places and don't lead to much of personal information about me. Here we have weird social environment, people don't care about privacy on the net and share a lot of *real* information, on the other hand they hesitate to share anything about their life if you meet them offline, which is funny IMO.

Living Room / Re: How viable is using ads as way to monetize a web service?
« Last post by mahesh2k on July 08, 2011, 07:54 PM »
If you're selling ad spots then traffic source matters. Some merchants expect you to show ads to US or CA users only and there are softwares like OpenX to do that or even services like buysellads or carbonads. Rates in CPM industry goes this way.

US - High CPM
CA - High CPM (less than US in few percentage)
UK - High (Less than US/CA)
Rest of the World  - Low

It also depends on the network location. Above table applies if the network and merchants are from US.

I use my first-name here in profile on DC and for the rest of the internet dozens of pseudo names. Thanks to mousers super DC SEO tweaks, my real name is not linked to this profile. I wish to keep things this way and no google plus is going to change that.  ;)

Living Room / 64 Bit OS - When to Switch ?
« Last post by mahesh2k on July 07, 2011, 06:38 PM »
I know that this topic was discussed earlier so let me ask you one question which wasn't covered before. When is the right time to switch to 64bit OS ? Is it when the sufficient drivers are available ? Or is there any benefit of switching to it at the end of 2011 ? I'm asking this because Intel I5 and i7 2nd gen. series processors are powerful enough for 64bit OS. So is it wise move to upgrade ? :tellme:

Apart from that which website or place you look for more information related to 64 bit OS/Errors/Issues etc ?

Many tech blogs are reporting that google is going to rebrand blogger.com and videos feature for the sake of google+. So bye bye blogspot blogs

I came across one guy refuting this privacy issue with argument -"any person you send email to can make it public with forward button, isn't that privacy issue ? " ;D My answer - Privacy issue between 2 people and privacy leak done purposefully inside one network with billion profiles for the sake of ad money/search quality is totally irrelevant.

Google Web Fonts lets you browse all the fonts available via the Google Web Fonts API. All fonts in the directory are available for use on your website under an open source license and are served by Google servers.

If google starts with app thingy then expect script kiddies and profile hacking, for which Orkut is already suffering from it. There are groups on orkut waiting for open G+ doors to run their script kiddies. Nothing will remain private or secure in such case. Using opensocial apps on orkut is so risky i don't see it'll be any secure in G+. Oh and i hate any social network using excessive flash/ASP combo, i hope G+ uses minimal of these two ugly ladies.

<Inserting adult keywords> with "Patent" and "Scour the earth" results makes funny combo.  :D

I think they made it easier for us to choose custom tag to fill in religion, hobbies and location. I mean you can change religion from atheism to pastafarians or some custom tag. System doesn't restrict us (like orkut) to selective options in drop down which is a good thing IMO. BTW, i was under impression that Atheism/Agnosticism are not labeled as a religion.

This is no different than what Facebook does.

Facebook has no web crawler (bot), google has it. Facebook doesn't disclose your data outside their network if you make such configuration in account settings. Google chases you on web using bot unless you specifically block the crawler(for your websites, profiles on social network etc) or they ban you for SEO trickery. I have a profile(check if it lets you view it without login in to facebook) and plenty of groups on facebook which are private and all these years they never made it on google or any other search engine results. Facebook targets users based on the information filled in profile and IP address, outside their network they don't chase you. Google desperately wants data for public usage/view so they can crawl and make money off the keywords used in the data. This is the reason they never take out sex tapes off youtube quickly( referring to Daniela Cicarelli case and many other cases) and same applies to other data formats on their other services. Do you think google likes anonymous groups/data/person ? They make money by publishing the data to public and showcasing ads on them. Don't be evil is big joke from google. Any adsense publisher can verify that because there is setting for geo-targeting/behavioral targeting to match the ads.

oh wait, Facebook has NO option for telling the world you're an atheist!
:-\  my profile has Atheist status. Facebook uses tag feature for location/religion/hobbies, so you can insert any custom <religion><random word> on profile fields. I guess you never filled your profile on facebook.

AFAIK, canadian ISP's started limiting users on data restricted plans on fair usage policy since 2009.

Same thing started here by airtel, they're limiting folks on bandwidth. I wonder what happened to scalability in business, i mean each year number of subscribers grow but still instead of working on capacity they're adding restrictions on data and calls ? how about increasing capacity of server and network ? I doubt they'll think this way. Rest of the Indian ISP's(like BSNL/You/Hathway etc) also limiting users on fair usage policy because they want to make more money from data-limited service. It's not that network/infrastructure is short, it's about monies :P

Tata Photon stick has less speed than vodafone here(i guess they have good coverage in mumbai only). Vodafone stick gives me speed of about 1Mbps-2Mbps in city circle and 4-8kbps outside the city(which you can see in my earlier reply).

But I do wonder what people use these seriously fast connections for

Please donate/divert your extra bandwidth here.  ;D

Answers.com got hit by google panda update and google fanbois are making sarky remarks on almost every website out there in order to get it out of the first page. So chances are there that some quick answers sites like ehow/answers/mahalo/about.com are going to suffer.

Here is my view, desktop version of OS and tablet version of OS will differ. Tablet version of OS is likely to have small footprint on disk with HTML5 and JS. But desktop version on which developers are heavily relying for graphic apps, media center and game development or other development will continue to be with the same core. Sure, MS wants to make things simple for tablet folks but that doesn't mean they'll rewrite core in HTML5 and JS and abandon all previous apps and projects creating huge gap for backward compatibility. Besides that if the core is purely based on browser (like chromeos) then all .NET and other desktop projects are trashed, that makes it more than 80% of windows revenue loss, more security issues with simple flawed OS design. Not sure if i get the picture clearly here. I think this announcement applies to tablet/pad based version of windows. In any case one bad move from windows is going to benefit linux.

Do these service qualify for mainstream market ?

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

I know that they're not accepted at some popular sites. But the concept is to replace real currency. Most likely individuals and business will enter in this bitcoin stuff earlier and will participate as long as they make 4-6 figure profit out from it and then they'll step out of it. So like any other currency market, bitcoin will also experience few quakes before death.

E-gold got shut down when they tried to do that but recently revived when they worked on their Anti-money laundry policy. Same is the case with liberty reserve and hd-money and other processors. No doubt they're good paypal alternative but they perform poorly when global market is disturbed or if there is recession.

I think every page with objection from experts or inquirer should have a link to talk page. That way if anyone changes article to reflect his/her political/religious or other beneficial views should get it sorted in that talk page and this talk page should be linked in respective page so that any such queries gets redirected. If pages get updated this way then surely quality of encyclopedia will be improved. In that case - Trustworthy,Objective,Complete,Well-written voting is not necessary. They need more moderators than such voting systems but i guess they're using stats from such voting polls to keep eye on such pages. Who knows what they're thinking with this experiment ?

I agree. There should be alphabetical index for the coding snacks appsortable as per feature/category/name. I'm sure that way it'll be possible to keep track of softwares.

I found one SMF theme for mobile users but not sure if it enabled based on browser detection. I think they may update SMF 2 in fuure (hoping) but mouser needs to update payment processing on that new version and have to change mods as well. So may result in downtime or frequent tests. I'll ask around forums if there is an easy solution.
