Living Room / DRM hits a new low as Amazon hits the delete key
« Last post by nosh on July 18, 2009, 04:12 AM »
This morning, hundreds of Amazon Kindle owners awoke to discover that books by a certain famous author had mysteriously disappeared from their e-book readers. These were books that they had bought and paid for—thought they owned.

Here's the quirky part - both Orwell books are freely downloadable Down Under.

It made a difference in my case because I never delete history... nearly 80000 entries.

Antisec Hackers Replace All Imageshack Images

Arschloches! (I only speak German on special occasions.)

Good thing they aren't lobbying for gun control.

Very useful and works, especially the first one.

Very true - my profile folder shrank from 105 to 85 MB and the awesomebar feels distinctly snappier.

General Software Discussion / Re: Personal Movie Organizers - A quick rundown
« Last post by nosh on July 11, 2009, 01:28 AM »
Ghacks wrote about MBase yesterday.

It has some way to go but looks quite promising.

A few things I really like about this app:

  • Grid view with thumbs for posters, directors and top actors.

  • Filters - Multi-select a bunch of values under various categories and the list on the right is narrowed down accordingly.
    filters.png
(scroll to the right to see the whole thing)

  • Actors: I love the way this part is presented. Not only does it list out all the movies in your collection featuring an actor but it also shows you their character name and age at the time of release.
    actors.png

I would love to transfer my whole collection and play with the program some more but it only imports its own format(s) so far. v2 is still in beta so one can hope for the best.

Living Room / Re: [ImageShack hack] Blog hack? Please help!

Since she's on blogger I don't see the point of using an external file host unless she's also linking to the same images from her main site. Blogger hosts its own images and if you use Windows Live Writer to publish your blog the whole thing is done with a click, no need to upload & link separately.

Fantastic photography, BTW.

I put the minivan in reverse, got out the crowbar, and offered the guy $25 (all I had in my wallet) or the crowbar.

I am officially a Y0himba fan now!  :D

I wonder who's next on the hitlist...

Or how soon a compromise will be reached for all kinds of media - something like Spotify has (apparently) done for music. Any Spotify users here who can vouch for how good or annoying it is?

Please don't forget most megacorps wouldn't bat an eyelid before squeezing every last drop out of their legit users, regardless of the inconvenience caused. Like when I pay extra to get a worthless POS TV channel which has acquired the rights for a single worthwhile event, and end up watching more ads than event.

IMO, to think of TBP and the like as long term players would show a lack of vision. And what they're doing isn't "right" but this wasn't a clean fight to begin with. In the long run the TPBs of the world will have played a significant role in leveling the playing field and for that they have my gratitude. RIP TPB!

NoSquint (mentioned previously) is an excellent addition for anyone running a resolution higher than 800x600. I usually take the full zoom as far as it'll go and then adjust the text size, if still required.

Note: The beta version available on their homepage has some more useful features (set text + bg color per site, etc.)

I remember watching a video at a friend's place years back - some dumb comedy. In one scene these kids take a roller coaster ride and start 'projectile vomiting'. The friend's mother (IRL) walked in just then. There was the two of them laughing so hard they were nearly on the floor and then there was me with a sheepish WTF grin. I just didn't get it.

I watched Monty Python's The Meaning of Life years later and saw the seminal 'masterpiece' with the obese man at the restaurant (which probably inspired a whole bunch of 'projectile vomiting' scenes in years to come). It still is the grossest, most disgusting scene I've seen in mainstream cinema. But it was SO over the top, it actually made me laugh. Go figure!

Living Room / Re: IE to be removed from Windows 7 in EU

I think bundling IE on a separate disk would be a good solution to a fcuked up situation. Can anyone cite an instance of a corporation being compelled to promote its competition? It seems completely unfair and other than MS it's Joe user (who would given the choice, probably pay a little more to avoid additional headaches) who's at the receiving end of this farce.

Uh-oh! I assumed it monitored all pixels but no, it does let you specify a pixel, missed that coz I've never used the feature.

Humoring mouser's two story request, here's an out and out lie:
It's the last 4 characters of my first name IRL.

Now for the truth.

True story: I actually coined my nick a couple of decades back in Japan. On a misty morning on the slopes of Mt. Fujimoto, to be exact. I would fight rogue ninjas back then out of sheer boredom (it was 28 kbps Internet tops on a good day then, Pam_Anderson_01_thumb.jpg was stuck at 12% for-ever - all I saw for days was her FACE - , just to give you an idea how bad things could get.)

So I'm messing with these two Ninjas just for amusement, letting them think they stand a chance and they're tiring out fast and I can just see that they would love to bolt but they can't (ninja pride issues). Feeling sorry for them (and a little bored now, TBH) I decide to end their misery.

Just then one of them decides to speak to the other "This guy's goo..." *whoosh* I take his head off with my blade a little too quick for the other nin-nin to register. And I'm transfixed - hypnotized by the random patterns made by the early morning light as it collides with the crimson spray bursting skyward. I forget everything around me and it seems like minutes but I know it's a split second. I'm shaken out of my reverie by a hoarse, defeated voice replying to the deceased "No Sh...!" *SLASHHHHH*

I have no idea what these guys were saying to each other (secret Ninja slang, most likely). *click* Hey! :D It's IE on my shiny new 8048, the net's finally working! <bg> - "Welcome to hotmail, the world's leading email provider! - please choose a User ID" So I type in "no sh" (error: spaces not allowed) coz let's face it, "thisguysgoo" just sounds lame.

Backup strategies have been covered in-depth in other threads.

I have multiple backups - across HDDs on the same PC + a networked PC. A weekly backup goes to an external drive. Very important stuff also gets backed up to an online backup site or just encrypted and gmailed to myself.

I've been forced to look for an alternative to Foxit, since it crashed repeatedly while attempting to read a particular (graphics intensive) file. I tried all the alternatives suggested in Ampa's original post, a couple of them too ghastly to even deserve a mention, TBH. The last one I tried was PDF-XChange Viewer and it's outstanding in every sense. A completely flexible setup including FF and IE plugins, a beautiful (customizable) interface, it renders the file that crashed Foxit flawlessly, it's fast. What a gem of a program! Thanks Ampa, for suggesting it.
