I found a temporary workaround : I can share files/folders using the ip address of connected PC, like \\192.168.1.x\<shared name>, as Shades suggested here.  So it's really just the names that are not seen/transmitted correctly.  I found some kind of error message in the system log (or app log ?), i'll post it here soon.

Just an update : I noticed that the included Samsung Software Updater proposed to update the Wifi Card driver.  After the update, it seems that the network is working fine.  I have to experiment a bit more to be sure it now works fine.

XYplorer does that : select a file, press Ctrl-S, give a new name to the file, et voilà !  XYplorer needed though.

There is no apparent firewall but XP's. The NC10 came with McAfee Security Suite installed but was slowing a lot this low perf. machine so I removed it and installed Sunbelt's VIPRE, which, after some tuning, gives me what I want.  McAfee has a firewall but was set to allow file/printer sharing and VIPRE has no firewall.  Also, since it sometime works without me changing anything, I don't see how it could come from that.

There is some kind of network management built in McAfee, and when I activate it I see the other connected PC and IP address.  Same thing when I install the demo version of network magic.  It's just the Windows mechanism that seems broken.

I have looked into folders parameters, there is no "easy file sharing" parameter but rather "look for shared files and printer" option which is selected.

I would like to test networking using ethernet cable and not Wifi.  But I have to stop investigating for a week, my wife is going on a trip with it...

Anyway, thanks a lot for your support, it gives me a lot of new possibilities to investigate.

Thanks !  I'll will experiment with that and let you know.  I forgot to mention something very strange : sometimes it does work, for a few minutes, then it is off again.  I also tried on someone else network with just one XP Home PC connected to a Wifi router (another brand than the one I am using) and I got the same result.  When I turned off the other PC, suddenly net view started to work again, giving as result only the NC10.

I have also seen strange error messages in Windows logs, that I'll try to post, they are clearly related to this problem.

BTW, I did try the network wizard several times, to no avail.  I didn't export the settings to other machines since they already network OK.  The challenge would be to solve this without changing the configuration of other machines.

General Software Discussion / Help for solving a XP home lan mystery

Hi all,

There is one thing I liked about XP, it's that it used to be easy to setup a small home network by just making all PC connected to the wifi router have the same workgroup name, by default MSHOME.

I just installed a brand new Samsung NC10 running XP SP3 and this time, it doesn't work.  The NC10 doesn't see the other XP but the other ones see it.  The problem can also be seen doing the following thing :

I open a command window (execute cmd), then type net view.

On the NC10, I get an error message after 10-20 secondes : "System error 6118, the workgroup server list is not currently available" (translated from French).
On the other PCs net view immediately returns a list of machines, including the NC10, like
\\SamsungNC10\ ...

I have used Google to look for solutions but found no clear cause.  This is all the more surprising since it is a brand new machine that I have not already "tuned".

I'd like to know if any of you has already encountered a similar problem and would gladly like some advice on how to solve this.  Thanks !

Thanks a lot for your time and detailed explanations.  This is definitely worth looking into.

I guess simplicity is a rather personal matter.

Here it's just that it's still a bit unclear to me whether I have to download just "Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded SP2 Feature Pack 2007" since Microsoft webpage says it's an option of another component that I don't have ("The Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007 is not a stand alone product; it requires the developer to have Windows® Embedded Studio tool suite installed").  Also this component is in English, whereas I will be using a French localized XP, and sometimes it yields to strange results to mix languages. Then I also have to chose between EWF and FBWF. And the software to activate them.  I cannot see how I could do this in 5 min.

Anyway, thanks for giving me these directions !
661
It's just that EWF seems a little bit more elaborate to set up.  But I have not read yet all the links you mentioned.
662
Thanks both.  I forgot to mention the netbook has a 160GB HDD

Regarding the Microsoft EWF, I suppose it is equivalent, more or less to SteadyState, which has been found to improve SSD usage by some ?

Hi,

I will soon be configuring a netbook, a Samsung NC10, running XP SP3 Home, and I am wondering which solution to use for backup/recovery.  I have to take into account that this machine has no CD/DVD reader.  Even if I could use an external CD/DVD recorder with USB, I would prefer a solution where it is not necessary.  I guess the system will come with 2 partitions, System & Data, plus probably a proprietary recovery system.  I would like to have a system that can withstand user error (user would be ... myself).

So far, I have identified these solutions:
  • FD-ISR (full version, not the cut-down currently sold by HDS)
  • R-TT drive image which has a CD-less recovery boot system
  • Drive Clone Pro 6 which install a non standard MBR and can reboot in Win PE environment
  • Paragon Drive Backup 9 Personal which allows to use a usb key as bootable recovery medium
  • Image for Windows v2 which also supports usb key as bootable recovery medium

I'd like to know which solution you would recommend in this CD-less configuration, either from this list or from another.

Thanks.

It seems this ecoPrint also works with laser printers, which is nice.

Still, for those who have a nicely working inkjet printer, inksaver is really effective.  Not only it reduces the quantity of ink used, but I find it improves the quality, when using low grade paper : less ink = less smear (if that's the right word).  So I would definitely like to have a vista version, long time promised by the publisher (the developer has probably left the company...).  I also found no real equivalent.

I never tried installing it on Vista, because of what the publisher says :
"Any PC running Windows® 2000, XP Home or XP Professional (if are using Windows Me or Windows 98 click here). Note: InkSaver does not currently support Windows Vista; we are in the planning stages for an updated version of InkSaver to support this new OS."

Thanks for sharing this. The first 4 have a way of doing this that I like less than SizeMe : they move files or create hardlinks (a lesser problem). SizeMe doesn't change the structure to be burned.  I have yet to try the last one.

The main download link seems to be down now.  But this one does. http://www.softpedia...Download-122757.html

Also check out SizeMe (mentioned before on the forums but can't find the thread)

SizeMe seems the closest to what I want so far, because I can use an external burning software (Nero).  But it's just the start of the evaluation...  Thanks !

Update on 2009-04-10 : I will definitely go with SizeMe, because of the possibility of drag'n'dropping the optimized structure to any DVD burning program.  Ignition, which I finally saw how to use, requires VSO's copy2DVD, not free.

Thanks all !

Thanks both !  I'll try it and let you know.

Hi,

I am looking for a simple program - preferably freeware - that does the following : I have a folder that holds all my downloaded software installers, currently around 6GB.  I'd like to burn them on a set of single layer DVD, without being zipped, and if possible, burn newly downloaded files on the space available on the last DVD, or on a next DVD.  I have tried several commercial backup programs : Genie Backup, Backup4all 3 and 4, Titan Backup, they either lack this function or have nasty bugs.  The closest think I can find is a Mac freeware : http://photography.s...eant.org/dvdspanner/.

I also tried Ignition from KC Software, which doesn't seem to work, and also includes a nasty adware (whose installation can be optionnally stopped).

Thanks !

Hmm, too bad since I have already recommended it to several friends and colleagues (not the same persons!).  I guess I'll know pretty soon those who have installed it...

Regarding the BSOD (Blue Screen Of the Day - reminds me my Win98 time), I remember that with paragon software, it is sometimes advised to change or add a parameter regarding IRPStackSize.  Don't ask me why...
see http://www.howtonetw...ues/irpstacksize.htm

Actually it depends on how many other imaging tools you may have already installed that rely on a "filter driver".  Such as Macrium Reflect, Acronis TI, etc.

GiveAwayOfTheDay is offering DB9 Personal today (2009-04-08).  Even better than the special edition.

Thanks !  I got one.  It seems it can be upgraded to V6 by simply installing the V6 version after uninstalling V4.  Not tested.

I think so.  I have one license I bought with previous BdJ offer. Sorry for the late answer.  It was updated very recently.  Previous version was fine, maybe only the burning engine was a bit crude, lacking a verification option.
