Developer's Corner / Re: Your First Programming Language vs Now
« Last post by Tuxman on July 17, 2017, 01:44 PM »
1. What was your first programming language?

Given that "batch files" are not really "programming", it was either QBasic or Turbo Pascal. However, my memories of QBasic are (too) long gone, so I'll stick with Turbo Pascal. If I remember correctly, my short Visual Basic experiences were after that; or were they? Ah, growing old is not for sissies.

2. Can you remember a snippet from that language?

Does "Hello World" count?  ;D (I moved my focus to Delphi not much later, which was and still is "like Pascal" but different.)

3. What's your current language of choice?
4. How would you rewrite that snippet in your current language?

The one fascinating thing with these two questions is the assumption that there is exactly one language I'd choose for anything. Does anyone here really stick to one language?

Not counting my paid day job (which involves Java and C#), I write

  • web applications in C, C++, Python, Common Lisp, or (if I'm in a hurry or I need to maintain existing code) PHP
  • recurring server tasks in Perl, POSIX shell script, or Common Lisp
  • desktop applications in C or Delphi (I stopped caring for Electron), still maintaining older C++ applications though
  • other browser things in JavaScript because they force me to.

Next up (if I'll find some time in the next decade or so): x86 ASM and (more) COBOL.

Do you really need a "Hello World" in all these languages?

Stop using inferior operating systems and join the Windows side of life. Problem(s) solved.

If you eventually resist this offer and there is no way to make you take the best chance you have  :P, it might be hard to fulfill your specific needs. I don't really understand why you dislike Krusader with its "KDE libraries" but you like Dolphin which uses "the KDE libraries" as well, but that might be just me.
The most missing feature in the available file managers seems to be a way to add bookmarks for single files. This might be related to the bookmarks management being closely tied to the underlying desktop's "bookmarks", e.g. GNOME bookmarks, which limit the feature set to their own. Windows does not have that. Hooray!

The only non-Windows file manager I found which can do that is muCommander which lets you enter file names as bookmarks - but it is written in Java, ugly as fuck and it lacks most of the other relevant features.

Depends on whose computer you're storing them on.

Do you only entrust your personal files to people whose lies are not too obvious?

Is cloud storage safe to use?

Is storing your files on other people's computers safe to use?

General Software Discussion / Re: Modern forum software: Discourse

If Discourse would be applied into Donationcoder.com, would that also not be to gut the whole forum section and surrender it completely to the organization/company behind the Discourse software?

No. You forgot the self-hosting offer.
But it would still be a horrible idea.

That's yet another problem: You can't have a "web app" in your toolbox. If it's gone, it's gone. No shiny USB thumbdrive will catch it for you.

web apps kinda made desktop apps redundant in all but a few use cases IMHO.

Unless you prefer efficient code.

there's now far more modern forum software

"Modern" as in "broken"?

Forum software that deliberately does not let you read/write postings if you disabled Javascript in your browser is "broken by design". Forum software that deliberately gets rid of any sub-forum structure and just displays everything as a stream of unsorted data is "broken by design" as well. The success of Discourse makes me sad concerning the future of the Web. And it is viral: The formerly awesome Misago forum software has picked up all of Discourse's horrible ideas up in early 2017. :(
Last time I had to choose a forum software, I chose Woltlab Burning Board - and this was for very good reasons. (No, it's not even free to use. No, I don't care.)

So my remarks from 2015 are still valid: "Modern" approaches to bulletin board software always suck. Still waiting for an exception to this rule.

OpenBSD uses 8 spaces which might or might not improve the code legibility (thus: security).

I consider languages insisting on indentation for semantics (like Python) to have made a really bad choice in that regard.

^ Pretty much this.

passwords that are made of actual words were more vulnerable than those "secure" generated ones

They are not.

If you, for any valid or not-so-valid reason, insist on using passwords you can not remember without technical support (ref. xkcd) and you plan to store them on other people's computers, you are the one in charge to make sure that everything is safely encrypted. Nobody but you should have a key for the decryption - because if there is a key stored on somebody else's computer... well, see LastPass's numerous "incidents".

Data you store on other people's computers can and will eventually be read by other people.

some sites/services require certain Chrome extensions that are (AFAIK) only available on Chrome.

Now that Firefox is aimed at the exclusive support of Chrome-compatible extensions, this might be less true than earlier.
But, as described, any Chrome-like browser (including Vivaldi) might be a good replacement as well; in fact, Vivaldi does not have this security issue in the first place.

Not necessarily, as this is mostly a UI issue which is not related to the browser engine.

You make it sound like installing a different browser than Chrome would be an unbearable task. Maybe I am smart enough to miss the point here. Care to elaborate?

Learning through pain, my friends ...

A UX design flaw in the Google's Chrome browser could allow malicious websites to record audio or video without alerting the user or giving any visual indication that the user is being spied on. (...) Bar-Zik reported the security issue to Google on April 10, 2017, but the company doesn't consider this as a valid security vulnerability.

Stop using Chrome. All of you. Now.
