Living Room / Re: Selectively Print Only What You Want From Webpages
« Last post by housetier on October 07, 2008, 02:56 PM »
I might need that one day... Usually I don't print anything (have been living without a printer for 6 years now), but maybe, just maybe, I'll be in a situation where I must print something. Then I can at least go to a place where they have internet and printer, and ask for a favor since I won't waste their dead trees.

Services like this are important imho; those that fill in the "little" needs, because the "smaller" the need the more people are likely to have it.

it's P.E.N.I.S.-envy: Powerful Electric Network-equipped for Internet System

There are some nerds that like to show off their gear. Others show off their houses, wifeys, cars, suits... ;) It is silly for some and entertaining for others.

Ehtyar I like this format much better! Thank you going through the trouble of compiling the news :-)

Could you also put a summary in the title? like "Weeklies 40: malware challange, mysterios cybercrimes, state-wide encryption.." something along those lines. I know it won't be easy to find such short summaries...

This is extremely important for me, thanks for finding it!

General Software Discussion / Re: the actual browser divide: plugins
« Last post by housetier on September 14, 2008, 05:01 PM »
A web browser which is extensible and customizable with plugins simply make a point of "the web is the OS": in a typical OS you install software you need or want and twist settings until it has become a tool you can work/play with.

Whereas the OS is a means to access the resources of your computer, the web browser is a means to access the resources of the internets.

I am the proud owner of:

Toshiba Tecra 8200
Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) 750 MHz
256 MB RAM
Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/XP
USB1.1

This is a very very very old laptop. However, it still works and allows me to browser the internets, chat, write email and watch most anime. Lately this h.264 codec has become increasingly popular and my system is not powerful enough to handle those, so I am looking for a replacement. I already found one and will give it to myself as a birthday present :)

Oh yeah, of course I run linux on this old machine.

Living Room / Re: The Great International Newsletter Project !
« Last post by housetier on September 05, 2008, 06:19 PM »
In my club we already have a printed newsletter. It contains stories from the club's blog and sometimes featured articles. It's published irregularly, about every 6 weeks.

People love it, even though most of the readers already know part of the stories: they are the ones who posted the blog entry or engaged in a dedicated discussion on the mailing list. It is very good for letting "outsiders" know about our club, because it is something tangible they can take home and read later.

Recently we offered subscriptions too. For a yearly fee you will will get all issues by snail mail as soon as the ink is dry. If memory serves me right, five people signed up for the subscription.

Living Room / Re: Mythbusters Silenced by Credit Card Companies
« Last post by housetier on September 05, 2008, 07:36 AM »
... having a credit card allows one to build a good (or bad...) credit report and score...

It also allows for the opposite: build a very bad credit record. so bad in fact one can't even sign up with an ISP or phone company, much less rent an apartment.

I have been burnt by credit cards and can only say: ask yourself if you really have the money (i.e. is it really yours) are going to spend with it.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by housetier on September 05, 2008, 04:06 AM »
I filter my mails by ListId into subfolders: "if ListId contains whatever move mail to INBOX.whatever". This keeps the mails from the many mailing lists under control, and my INBOX does not fill up as quickly. Certain senders' emails are silently deleted, I won't even get a notice of their deletion.

After this, SpamAssassin goes through the new mails, deleting those which seem junk. I do not care about false positives because in case of mailing lists there often is a reply quoting the important parts of the email.

Because I have five accounts set up in my email program, and the folder structure is quite extended I make use of the "Unread Folders" view the program offers: only folders with unread messages are shown.

I ignore the sender's priority setting. It is I who decides when to read an email, if I read it at all. I do not read all the emails, and reply to even fewer, although I would have something to say to most.

My mail program is, of course, Thunderbird.

If bandwidth was scarce ISPs could make more profit. They keep telling the story of the clogged tubes so they can sell the "guranteed bandwidth plans" which of course cost more than the average home use connection.
