Living Room / Re: How can a RAM module suddenly go *%$!?!#<!!
« Last post by tinjaw on February 10, 2008, 11:23 PM »
Sounds like you just got a bad stick of RAM. If you bought it that soon ago, it should be under warranty.

I found it odd that you posted this because I too had just such a weekend. Weird computer problems from Friday afternoon until this evening. Weird stuff like a computer that won't restart unless you clear the CMOS every time you shut it down. Must be something misaligned in the cosmos.

General Software Discussion / Re: Simple download manager?

If this needs to be portable AND scheduleable, does that mean you are going to leave the portable storage device with the program in the computer for the duration of both the time until the download starts and the time it takes to download? Or by "portable" do you mean you can drag and drop the applications folders to the desktop computer and run it from the desktop without a need for some kind of setup/installer? Can we count on access to the Window's Task Scheduler?

Developer's Corner / The DC Coders' Breakfast Club
« Last post by tinjaw on February 07, 2008, 07:01 AM »
I thought it would be nice if the folks here at DC were to start a Breakfast Club. The idea is that once each weekday morning, as you start your day you post to the thread what coding related things you would like to do today to increase your coding skills. It will help to motivate us, I believe, and also help for us to focus on spending a little time each day to learn something new.

I'll start.

Today I am going to research how to manipulate the Setting tab in the Display Properties box via the Win32 API, so I can do it programmatically using AutoIt.

I'll check both of these programs out and see which one wins a spot in my toolbox.

They both should be in your toolbox. They focus on two different things. Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier focuses on getting data from a dying hard drive. TeraCopy's focus is on day-to-day use. Since both have different specialties, each will outdo the other when doing what they were made to do.

TeraCopy already does something similar to this. It is free. They also have a Pro version with extras.

I would be willing to bet that they cause of the problem was that the cold air from the compressed air met the hot air of the power supply any you had instant rain shower in your PSU.

I would love to be a Tablet PC, but I can't afford one. I am thinking about getting something like this...

CyberPad Drawing Tablet
CYBERPAD - CyberPad Drawing Tablet USB_1202234432978.png

Have any of you folks used something like this? I would love to hear from somebody who has used such a gadget for an extended period of time.

Now I am off to research other options...

I understand enough about compression to know that there isn't one compression algorithm to rule them all. However, I don't know enough to know which ones are best for various tasks. For example, it is only elsewhere on these forums that I learned a best practice for when only WinZip is available. What I would like to have is a list of these Best Practices. For example, what if I want to archive a whole directory of files of mixed types, some of which may already be compressed to some degree. I don't care how long it takes but I do want it to be absolutely as small as I can get it.

Does anybody know of such a document?

Bump  8)

I got to install something today and get this going. Any suggestions on what I am looking for up there on the other side of iphigenie's post? If not, then I am going to install Money 2005 and suffer through it.

I can't seem to justify spending money on new software that is supposed to help me save money when I already have software that will do it.  :-[

I might get one of these...

Cooler Master
CM 690 ATX Mid Tower
Micro Center Online - the center of .computer shopping_1202131248921.png

Only $20 + S&H after $40 rebate.

Has anybody used one of these before? Did you like it?

The best fix? Buy a new case :)

I will do so gladly. Just as soon as you send me enough Donation Credits to cover the cost of the case plus S&H.  8)

I set up a user on the Windows Server (in a Virtual Machine). I can see the server in the host operating system but can't see how to log into the server as the user I created ?? I think I need to go through setting up Active Directory in the server so that there is a domain to log into - but I am not too sure how to do that .... yet!

Carol, I am confused. You just login to Windows Server like you would any other box. You had to login as Administrator to create the user account. You just do it the same way.  Can you attach a screenshot? Maybe that will clear things up.

Well, they are called fans if they are fans. You mean something like a passive heat spreader? Either way, yes, it is safe.

So, it's safe to use it with the components located near sensible parts, that is, coolers?

Sorry Lashiec, but I think something got lost in the translation. Did you mean sensitive and fans or were you talking about water blocks?

Are there "bigger screws"? I think no.

Yes. I have used short sheet metal screws in the past.

Just a little tip.

For years I have been cleaning my computer components with a simple bore bristle shaving brush. The bristles are stiff enough to get the sticky dirt while not endangering the small parts. It is also static free.

I have a few trusty computer cases that I have used for years and years. They have been used so much that they screw holes for the screws to hold in the expansion cards are pretty much all stripped. Besides go the hardware store and buying bigger screws, do you know of any way to remedy the problem?

General Software Discussion / Re: What Are Your Views On BUGS?
« Last post by tinjaw on February 03, 2008, 08:46 AM »
Regarding the crashes on exit, is there a way to finger the badly behaved extensions? Other than disabling all of them and then enabling them one by one.

I know this isn't what you were asking, but it is a good time to mention the generic debugging technique of "halfing". You cut out half of the stuff. If the problem doesn't go away, you take out half of the remaining stuff, etc. If, after you take out half of the stuff and the problem goes away, you switch halfs and repeat the process.

The "real" answer to your question involves using a debugger and attaching to the process.

I'm one of the "other" votes.

I'm a programmer so I am just looking out for my vested interest.  :P J/K

As I programmer, I know that bugs are inevitable. I judge bugs in a relative light. If it is a piece of shareware by one developer I am a lot more tolerant than a commercial application developed by an entire company that has a QA team.

There is one type of bug, however, that is never acceptable - data loss and/or corruption. This is the cardinal sin and developers should be, rightfully, chastised for such bugs.

Actually what I was wondering was how to login to the server as a user.
I'm not sure what you mean because that describes several different things. All of them involve creating a user account on the domain, but then differ from there depending on what you are trying to do.

I also suspect the initial phone interview will not be more than "Who are you?" and "What have you done?". However, that is good news because it means you have longer to study for the real technical interview.

My #1 piece of advice about technical interviews is: Be brutally honest.

Somebody who does know something in and out will spot a mark a mile away. I can tell easily when somebody is stumbling along on buzzwords and concepts and actually has never done it and has no clue.

There are two types of technical interviews, because their are two types of technical positions, beginner and advanced. For the advanced, they often need you to hit the ground running and be productive in about two weeks. They positions are usually on an established team that is looking to expand because their workload is growing on a big project and they need help fast. The beginner position is not simply beginner in terms of technical knowledge, but beginner in the sense the new guy on the team. This is a position they hope you enjoy and that you grow technically as you are mentored by the team.

In the former, you need solid technical knowledge. In the latter, you need a track record of taking on tasks, of any nature (like a PhD) and successfully completing it. You need to show a general knack for the logic of programming and a willingness to listen to your mentors.

As for study material, I agree with The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master and Jeff Atwood's blog. Also good are Joel Spolsky's two books. On the latter of the two, don't forget that part of being on a team is communicating about what you are doing, not just writing code.
