While they maintain they did "nothing..."
MS put up a banner across my wife's screen urging her to upgrade
-cranioscopical (November 06, 2013, 06:45 PM)

There was something to that effect mumbled in passing.

Still, it's a hell of a bind to put someone in since they were traveling by car when the whole thing kicked off.

Yup, when one tells it to move on it just doesn't w8, it gets right into the download without ado — no second chances. Had I not been okay with doing the 'upgrade' I'd have been appalled. As it was I sat there wondering just how many people were going to get screwed by this — it's a really dumb way to do things.

Wasn't sure where to put this and didn't want to start another thread, so...  :D

Had a client (who was out of town) call today in low grade ballistic mode after apparently their Windows 8 laptop just decided to up and start upgrading itself. Luckily I had stashed a copy of the installer for their cellular broadband card - which the 8.1 upgrade broke - on the laptop so I could get them back online over the phone.

Has anyone else heard of that bizarre behavior?

Yeah, just last night I wanted to look up something about W8.1 and came across a thread somewhere that was stiff with such complaints. Did your client really do absolutely nothing to start that going?

There's this, too — MS put up a banner across my wife's screen urging her to upgrade. No obvious (to her) way to get out of it, When I saw it I though ti was some sort of scam but, no, in the end it led to the store.

OTOH I've 'upgraded' two machines now with no significant glitches.

Finally! Today I found time to update Win8 to Win8.1. This after a week when Murphy pitched his tent in our yard.

Everything went smoothly the first time round. Thanks to the advice in this topic I was able to avoid opening accounts that I don't want.
So, thanks to all.

(The 8.1 Start screen is the most garish thing I've seen since the WWW began.)

655
How did you get hold of 8.1 to begin with? I thought one had to have a Microsoft account to obtain the upgrade.
-cranioscopical (October 21, 2013, 04:50 PM)

It's on page 1 of Metro Shopping in Windows 8
Thanks. I haven't even looked at that. The one time I tried to it wanted me to have a MS account.

(I'm on such a slow internet connection that probably it is academic.)
-cranioscopical (October 21, 2013, 04:50 PM)

It's a 2.83Gb download.
The next time I have a month to spare... Oh, and is that 64- and 32-bit, I have both here?

It looks as if my only options will be stick with 8 or pay for the upgrade on a physical medium (always assuming that I don't have to pay the full price for the O/S a second time.

Thanks for the info btw

Living Room / Re: Adobe admits 2.9 million customer accounts compromised
« Last post by cranioscopical on October 10, 2013, 03:52 PM »
it sounds like maybe only some people's CC info was taken
You wish!  :(

They were unforgivably late contacting me as well. To rub salt into the wound, their password-reset page wouldn't identify my Adobe ID, so I had to spend the best part of 90 minutes on the phone with a delightfully pleasant lady from India while she tried all manner of things. Her helpful attitude did quite a bit to mitigate what was my very bad impression of Adobe (see here also). Just goes to show you how important it is to have good people on the front lines.

661
That's a very generous offer x16wda thank you for making it.
I think keys are tied to Adobe ID's though.
662

Apart from the fiasco with 2.9 million compromised accounts...

Adobe has the following offer:

Since introducing Photoshop CC, we’ve listened to feedback from a spectrum of our customers, from advanced professionals to casual enthusiasts. One common request was a solution specifically tailored for photographers. We listened, and at Photoshop World we’re announcing a special offer for our loyal Photoshop customers. Beginning today, customers who own Photoshop CS3 or higher are eligible for a special Creative Cloud membership offer that includes all of the following for just $9.99/month

At the moment I have the full Adobe Creative Suite 6, which includes Photoshop and doesn't come cheap.
Even so, I thought I might take up this offer.
However, when I spoke to an Adobe sales rep. I discovered this. The offer is limited to those who have only the stand-alone Photoshop, not the full Creative Suite.
So, if you spent a few hundred on Photoshop alone, you're in. If you spent a few thousand on the whole suite, too bad, so sad.

I can't say that words fail me but those that spring to mind cannot be used here  >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(

Thanks to everybody for the replies!

Plenty of good guidance here for me.

I'd forgotten (briefly) even the existence of Vista, which is why I was thinking of an XP to 7 upgrade. Given the circumstances I'll opt for a clean install of W7.

I use mainly Macrium Reflect Pro for backups, so that would be my first step (and second  :) )

I'll trawl around the netbook for any keys I can find. I'll probably recommend some good freeware alternatives to anything I can't fix.

Mainly, this machine will be for internet browsing (NOT with IE), email, data, some utils to make life more pleasant/safe, and a few basic games. That's probably not too challenging, even for a low-resource machine.

The reason for changing is that XP is moving out of support. If I could keep this thing off of the internet it would be XP for ever.

As always, DC is a great starting point to gather informed opinion

In a classic case of the blind leading the blind I have to help someone upgrade her XP netbook to Windows 7.

At the moment I don't have an available copy of Windows 7 so I'd welcome any suggestions about where to get one these days.

The netbook will boot from a USB stick.
It has an Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor.
1 GB memory.
160 GB hard drive.

So, my questions are

Assuming I can get my hands on new Windows 7 DVD, what's the best way to go about creating a bootable USB stick and getting the DVD contents onto that?

Any idea if Windows 7 will update the existing XP leaving things intact (data and executables)?

Which version of Win7 should I be looking for?

(The software now on the machine is legitimate but nobody knows where the installation media are, nor does there appear to be a record of serial numbers. Having to wipe the drive will therefore have unhappy consequences.)

Your help would be appreciated.

Actually, that would be 'kiſs your ſiſter', consistent with the post-medieval/pre-modern usage of the archaic 'long s'w
Glad to see it go, really.  I've a spelling-nazi streak in me that would have been driven to fits...

Even better would be if we could come up with some unique interesting functionality that would justify this tool's existence.
I know this is outre but what's the possibility of being able to search for images based on colour content. E.g., show me anything that's predominantly blue/has at least 10% red/only b&w?

Personally, I'd like more people to help light a fire under Renegade's butt to get him to finish this ruler. I have found it to be quite useful for just about anything I could need a ruler on my screen for.
Cor, strike a light, I'll match that request!  :onfire:

So I've thought about this a bit more, some random thoughts:

with a little bit of work, one can already configure a free image gallery/browser/search tool to use with SC.  In fact I encourage people to find some good ones and we can make .sctool files for them to share make it trivial to use with SC.

I welcome thoughts on existing free image browsers/searchers, and thoughts on whether it would be worth creating a new one.

As Cranioscopical said, a primary feature of this tool should be the ability to quickly see the recursive contents of folders and quickly search and filter, with rapidly adjustable thumbnail sizes and sort by different properties.

Some good, free image viewers are mentioned in a review on Gizmo's freeware..

My own thoughts are these:

Stepping back a bit, SC is all about screenshots. They arrive in a single location, and they are in a limited set of formats. It's easy to get fired up about, and carried away by, thoughts of hunting through multiple drives, displaying RAW images, sorting, batch processing... etc. but most of us do have other image tools that can be set to handle SC's output. Having SC try to assume (any of) those tasks is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.

The more I think about it, the more I come to realize that SC already has *almost* everything that I would want for my selfish purpose. If SC itself could be induced (optionally) to search and display a flat view of the contents of its own sub-folders, that would pretty much do it for me. In combination with the existing ability to display multiple columns of thumbnails it would be just about perfect. Opening another window, or calling another application would detract from the appealing single-mindedness of what SC now offers.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting! You're right, a lot of time could be spent playing with this

The Premium service of FlightRadar24 will allow you to point your smartphone camera at a overflying plane and have it identified.
Apparently I don't need the premium service. I pointed my phone at what I thought was a plane and used the subsequent deposit to identify a seagull.

mouser, since you asked...

Maintaining my reputation for being as thick as two short planks, I failed to read the text in that bottom panel (largely because I was in object mode already, so I didn't notice anything change). Once I did see it, it took me about 3 minutes to locate the white cursor (because it's a white arrow).

Do you think that separating further the object tools from the other items on the vertical toolbar might help, i.e. introducing a larger gap between 'Configure' and 'Selection modes'?

Do you think that "You are currently in object-editing mode." could be made to stand out within the panel in some way?

What might be useful for the search bar would be the ability to search subfolders and display appropriate images all in the same view but that's asking rather a lot.

yes, i was thinking this myself.  this is something a gallery view could be made to do.
In that case, try to have it ready by tomorrow afternoon, would you?   ;D  ;D  ;D

Screenshot Captor / Re: Poor man's 'gallery view' in Screenshot Capture

what i mean is a kind of Gallery mode that you could switch in and out of, which would basically just show a full page of thumbnails in a grid, for quick browsing, searching, deleting, etc.
Probably, if it has an option for enlargement of whichever thumbnail is made 'active' either when using arrow keys to scroll the thumbnails or by pointing with the mouse.

The tiny drawback with using thumbnails for a 'gallery' is that that one can't scroll through all of them continuously with the arrow keys — only through each row or column. Mouse scrolling, however, is great as one just has to click to see the main image (which is especially good with AutoFit checked).

In my view, since SC is already so good at yielding a pseudo-gallery view, spending lots of time on 'improving' it might result in a beautifully gilded lily.

What might be useful for the search bar would be the ability to search subfolders and display appropriate images all in the same view but that's asking rather a lot.

Anyway, thanks very much for the recent improvements, SC goes from strength to strength!

Now, if only you could placate those cross hairs...  8)
