Living Room / Re: SEC uses JOBS Act to set up new roadblocks to crowdfunding
« Last post by mwb1100 on September 04, 2012, 01:14 PM »
I'm not saying that what the SEC is planning/has done is good (especially since I haven't read any of the articles about it, so I don't really know anything about it), but I have been wondering when the first big scam from one of these crowd sourcing projects would happen.

I know it will at some point (though I'm not sure exactly what I might mean by "big").

Interesting idea - on reading the instructions it feels more of a culinary 'role playing game' than a competitive game.  I watch some of those cooking shows (Top Chef, Chopped, Restaurant Impossible) with my wife, and while I'm not a rabid fan, they sure can be entertaining.  I could see how a group of fans of those types of show might really enjoy this game.  Who knows - some interesting actual meals might pop out as a result!

Also, it kind of reminds me of those 'deal-a-meal' recipe cards that were hawked on TV long ago (a nostalgia thing).

Unfortunately, being supremely non-creative, I'm ill-equipped to provide any help of the sort you're actually looking for.

Doesn't look like any kind of surprise to me - selling is a large part psychology, and I think that any salesman would agree with that.  Why wouldn't Apple train their sales people to use phrases that make customers feel good or to deflect from problems they might have experienced with Apple products or pricing?  I would think that would be standard operating procedure in any sales organization, from your boiler room scam artists or your friendly neighborhood used car dealership to your billion dollar military contract provider.

For some reason PaperBack has gotten a couple mentions recently on Bruce Sterling's "Beyond the Beyond" blog and on extemetech, so I thought I'd poke this old thread... (please forgive me)

This is awesome! You can now photograph the movement of photons in real time...

But, Is having everything available in "real time" where we really want to go?

In all seriousness, that is amazing.  I wonder how they're able to "open/close" the shutter so fast (I know they aren't using a physical shutter, but since I don't know what they are using, that's the term I'm stuck with)?

One nit to be aware of with sc is that the options that use an "=" sign are very particular about the whitespacing.  The "=" sign is actually part of the option name, so there cannot be a space before the equal sign, and there *must* be a space after.  So

sc config wuauserv start= disabled

But not:

sc config wuauserv start = disabled
sc config wuauserv start=disabled

he wasn't a patron, and came in through an unlocked emergency exit

My understanding is that he was a patron. Early in show, possibly during the previews, he left through the emergency exit (taping the door or blocking it to allow it to be opened from the outside) then came back after collecting his weapons from his car.

I'll probably get a spare lifetime license or two at this price.
Better not delay too much longer - seven days from the 13th doesn't leave too much more time.

Living Room / Re: new DVD "M-Disc" perfect for archive material
« Last post by mwb1100 on July 19, 2012, 04:14 PM »
If you're worried about archiving data for more than 20 years, I'd be as concerned about how available reader devices might be.  For example, even  if your old Iomega Zip disks still contain their data, it has probably already become a bit of a problem finding a working Zip drive. I wouldn't be surprised if it would be easier to find something to read an old 8 inch floppy.

Of course, DVD readers will probably be around for a much longer time than Zip drives, but it's still something to consider if you 're serious about long, long term archiving.

Imagine you're at home, getting out of the shower, and your spouse snaps a photo of you. While you don't want to post full frontal nudity of yourself, perhaps the facial expression is really funny, and you want to share that. So, you crop the photo and email or upload it...

Now, if the software didn't erase the stamp, you've just sent that original stamp of your naked body around. Not good. And probably not what you'd intended to do.

Kind of like what happened to Cat Schwartz from the old TechTV show:

Post New Requests Here / Re: editors

Starting in version 18.10, UltraEdit also supports folding by indent level:

This release includes native support for code folding in Python files based on indentation level. For other languages, you can enable indent-based code folding by adding the "EnableCFByIndent" keyword to the top of the appropriate wordfile.

I haven't used the feature so I'm not sure how well it works, but it seems like it should work for text-based outlines. Having to edit a 'wordfile' to enable the feature for a particular filetype isn't super friendly, but you should only have to do that once.

Is there a strong reason to go with the Premium license over the basic license? As I understand it, the only real difference is premium gets daily list updates while basic gets the block list updated once a week.  Is there enough of an arms race in ads vs. ad blockers that I'd notice a major difference in browsing experience?

I cannot begin to recall the email address I had at the time, nor the user ID

But this is essentially the same problem as losing a license key.  I think people generally don't like having to download a specially licensed version of an installer (particularly if you can only do so for a few days) because you can't stick that installer in the spreadsheet/notepad document/whatever it is you keep your list of software license keys in.

Fookes has tried more product delivery methods over the years than I'd care to count

He should look at how EditPad Pro (Just Great Software/JGSoft) does it: http://www.editpadpro.com/download.html

You put in the email address the software was registered to and the 'user ID' you get when you buy the software, and the licensed installer (with your license details embedded in it) gets generated and downloaded.

I think I still prefer generic installers that install as a trial until you enter a key. That way, if the vendor goes away due to whatever circumstances, you still have a hope of finding an installer somewhere that'll work.  Admittedly, that's  a pretty rare scenario, so it's not something that keeps me awake at night.  But given a choice...

However, for those times where the vendor wants to provide you with a separate, registered installer that has your info 'burned' into it, the scheme that JGSoft uses is pretty slick.  And they don't charge you again/extra for something you already bought.

(Unfortunately, I have so far been unable to get these add-ins to work. This may be because of conflicts with the 64-bit OS.)

I think you may need to use the add-in that matches your Word or One-Note installation, not necessarily the OS.  In other words, if you have 32-bit Office installed on a 64-bit OS (which is I think is the common configuration even on a 64-bit OS), you should install the 32-bit Add-in.

Only a 10% discount here/now.

I still get a 20% discount.  I suspect that if you clear out your cookies related to the NoteTab and/or Cleverbridge sites (or visit with a different browser) you'd get the 20% discount again.

I MISSED THIS ONE!

Me too.  I don't have all of the bundles, but would have liked to have caught this one.

It was my own fault - I was aware of the deal, but my undeniably awesome procrastination ability won out.  I need to figure out a way to make money off of that skillset.
