Via The Old New Thing, it appears if you are interested in the sixth edition of Programming Windows which is all about programming Windows 8 using C#, then you can save a little money by getting the prerelease version for $10 at the moment, which they say will get you the final when (if) it is released.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Diablo 3 announced!

I am (slowly) playing D3, and if you liked D2 I think you are going to like this as well, it feels much the same. The graphics are spectacular (for isometric 3D) and make me stop every now and then just to check out for instance the way the sand sweeps over the desert surface, or the details in the backgrounds :-*.

Its fairly easy so far, but I guess that is the point of normal difficulty, to allow everyone to play.

Just for the record, I am not playing this in the minmax way some people do with specific "builds" and powerleveling, I am doing my best to just take it slow and enjoy seeing some of the characters I remember from way back again .

We seriously discourage the Use of Chrome since it is a product developed by Google and the NSA

So, it's like DuckDuckGo with a conspiracy theory? ;D

I was a registered user of VueMinder a year back, and it is a very nice product. If you are looking for calendar software, it is definitely worth a try. For various reasons I moved to mostly using Google Calendar and MyLifeOrganized.

Like cranioscopical, my experience with their support back then was also excellent.

The $50 for 1 TB at google is per month.

The best value seems to be 100 GB, since for the rest of them, doubling the space costs 1 cent more than the previous step (how odd).

Btw, am I the only one who feels drive is .. underwhelming?

I mean .. 5 GB free storage, with the same features as everybody else. It would have been awesome 5 years ago, but today it is just another one :-\.

There is no way a company can get your files, make them available to you, store them in multiple datacenters for security, convert formats, scale images, OCR text, allow you to share files with others, and so on, without making sure you give them the right to "use" the files under certain restrictions.

It looks like this feature is disabled by default, thankfully.

Google Drive, SkyDrive & Dropbox compared [Digital Inspiration]
http://www.labnol.or...drive-dropbox/21214/

The 2-step (phone based) security that Google provides is the killer feature for me.

From the review:

SkyDrive offers plenty of storage space but the best part is that the SkyDrive web app lets you access files and folders of all your other computer right from within your browser. You just need to have SkyDrive on these machines and you can then easily access any of their files from any other computer, anywhere simply using your Windows Live ID.

Worries me slightly. I mean, it sounds like a nice idea, I'm just not sure I think Windows Live ID provides enough security to give access to all your files.

"GDrive" is Google's version, to be announced any day now. I love all this storage; the more companies offering free products, the more users can be selective. Go * Microsoft.

* = away

Everyone record this day. These are words that I NEVER thought I would see coming from Zaine's fingers!

+1

No doubt! :)

I think you forgot to read the small print :P.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Bitdefender "lifetime" $80

If that is true, that is pretty typical of Giveaway of the Day, it's basically a demo. I tend to avoid that site.

As I understood it, the offer itself is not related to GOTD, it was just where Curt saw the ad pop up?

I am afraid BitDefender themselves are to blame for this interesting use of the English language.

Here is a FAQ about it from their support section:

http://www.bitdefend...ime-Edition-905.html

On how many computers can I install Bitdefender PC Lifetime Edition?

Bitdefender PC Lifetime Edition can be used for the entire lifetime of one computer.

Can I transfer Bitdefender PC Lifetime Edition from one computer to another?

Bitdefender PC Lifetime Edition has been designed to be used on one computer.
Since the product license key is tied to the computer where it’s first installed, it cannot be transferred to another computer.

(again of course, for "entire lifetime" = "5 years")

Once again it is about reading the small letters:
>>Lifetime protection key is valid for the computer you first install it on, for the lifetime of the machine, not exceeding 5 years<< Hrmff! "Lifetime"!

;D

It's free* too!

(* = for redefinitions of the word "free" that mean costing $80)

No, I didn't. :(

Try sending him an e-mail; he got back to me after a short while with the correct code for my purchase.

Interestingly, I tried to purchase through PayPal first and that got me the regular price of $49.95, so I had to use the credit card option to get the discount.

Anyway, the order process seems to not always be entirely reliable, but as long as Bill is so nice about fixing things that shouldn't hold anyone back I think .

I just bought a family pack as well, which got me a page with a code for Task Catcher .

Check what you get when you order, the process seems a little flaky.

Conc. "easy way to zoom in and move around the image" XY has its famous "Mouse Down Blow Up" (mouse down on thumbnails pops the image in original size and "move-aroundable"). I have never seen anything better anywhere.

It is certainly not bad .

Would it be possible to have the mouse wheel zoom in and out in MDBU mode?
Could there be a zoom on click option in the full screen preview?
2-up and 4-up full screen preview with zoom to compare images?
Support for image formats that do not have a default handler, like RAW images? (since this is the portable file manager)

I used Directory Opus back on the Amiga, and Norton Commander on the PC until it was surpassed by Dos Navigatorw, which I used all the way up to Windows 98.

I use Directory Opus, Total Commander and XYplorer today, though mostly TC.

DO was an awesome replacement for the windows style folder browsing on Windows XP I think, it is an impressive program that can do so many things. It's just awfully expensive, and since I upgraded to Windows 7 I haven't really missed it enough to warrant the upgrade price.

TC looks horrible. What won me over about it was the way it allowed my fingers to work the same way they did back in the NC/DN days. If you are using the mouse then it is probably not as good as the others, but if NC keyboard shortcuts are hardwired into your brain, you feel right at home :D.

XY is great. There are so many things to like, and the developer is very active and keeps on adding nifty little features. Unfortunately he keeps on adding nifty little features and not the big nasty stuff that actually makes it unusable to me :-[. The sad part is some of the problems are due to the language it was written in, and thus unlikely to be fixed.

I've tried xplorer2, cubic, free commander, altap salamaner, but none of them really struck that magic mix of features and efficiency for me. I liked xplorer2 a lot, and would probably have bought a license if it wasn't for the absurd licensing hoops to put it on an USB drive back then.

I've had almost no issues with Chrome, but then again I have only WOT and adblock installed. If you have a lot of addons, I would probably look there first. Try disabling them all and see if you have the same problems.

I had a license for PD back at version 8, and it was fairly nice albeit a little slow.

One thing I liked was that it was able to defrag a drive that was nearly full unlike most tools.

One thing I did not like was that it kept processes running all the time on my machine .. I wonder if this is true for the free version too?

Thanks for your info, Jibz... but I was able to find another screencap program that fixed my problem.  This one, for some reason, allows my PSP to open PNG pics in inches.

I am glad you found a solution to your problem :).
