Basically, just run it, then look for pages with zero visits. (That's what you're looking for when you say "unused", right?)

Well-l-l-l ... not exactly.  Here's the problem:  pages no longer in use or referenced.  Xenu shows too much, e.g., Xenu will show every reference to a bad link, even though that link is only bad on one (1) or two (2) pages:  the link is still valid from other pages.  Obviously, there's not cause to delete the pages with that particular bad link.

However, there are pages, even folders, that are no longer in use .  Those are the pages/directories we'd like to delete.  However runnin' 'em all down is labor- and time-intensive, as well as being prone to inadvertent error  :o.

Basically, this is a non-trivial task.  I disbelieve that this is the first time it has ever cropped up, and I'm reasonably certain someone much smarter than me has created a means to ease the process.  I'm lazy, so I just want to find that means  :P.

Seems as though I saw reference to such a while back.  Thought it was here, but haven't found it  :(.

I'm looking for an application or script that will identify all unused  :o pages on a Website.  Something like a reverse site map  :-\.  This could be done with a site map, I suppose, but it would be a very time-consuming process, I fear .

Any of you folk know of such?  Or, perhaps, a reasonably speedy method to accomplish that end?

Yeah, I've been underwhelmed by the import export capabilities of any of the so-called pims  :P.  Those functions always seem to come across as afterthoughts, and seldom seem very well thought out  .  Kinda surprising - to me, anyway - considering how long XML has been around  .

J-Mac, you might check the UR export/MI import capabilities.  I can't test right now, on Android away from home.

I still have Info Select (IS), Ultra Recall (UR), and MyBase (MB) installed, as well as MyInfo (MI).  I have ~15 years of data in IS, maybe a year's worth in UR, ~six (6) months in MB, and another six (6) months in MI.  I'm not about to spend the time - and the frustration  :o! - to move that data into a new product, particularly when the data prolly won't completely fit  :(.  So I have access to my history in fairly short order, even though I no longer use those products on a daily basis.  Might be something to consider, provided your usages will allow it  :-\.  (For my purposes, MI comes closest to doing what I did for years in IS.)

CSVed may do what you want.  I haven't tried it with a global replace, but I've used it for a few years with great results.  There's also a uniCSVed for unicode files.  I believe it can be made portable, as well.  If you're on a Win system, you might take a look at it.

I've been going through a number of such products for about a year now.  MyInfo is superior to anything else I've used.  It has some foibles in regards to search (e.g., cannot search on flagged items- at least I have yet to find a way) and save (saving tends to lock the system, albeit briefly).  That said, it's the best such product I've found in a year or more of intensive searching.

No, I'm not affiliated  :), and yes, I paid full price for it  :(.  For my purposed, it just works .

There's a problem with either flat file or export to text.  Much of what I'm doing is to capture complete Web pages, including graphics.  Some of the captures are intrinsically worthless without those graphics.  And therein lies the dilemma.

If I'm capturing, for instance, a tutorial on a particular coding discipline, I need to be able to see the code examples in the page.  Oft times, that code is presented as a screen capture, typically a .jpg or .png file.  If I cannot see the code, the capture is futile.  That's the reason I'm using MyInfo - it has the most complete capture capability of any software I've used to date, and I've tried (and sometimes paid for) a bunch of 'em.  It also puts the URL of the capture at the bottom of the page, so I have attribution and citation references available.  The only problem I have with it, so far, is the inability to merge files.  I can do a copy/paste from one database to another, record by record, but I have to be able to recognize what needs to be moved - and it is a tedious process, very time-consuming  :o/.  That's why I was hoping against hope for a way of automating/simplifying that process.

Unless I'm completely mistaken, these types of files are almost certainly proprietary (to the software) binary files and, thus, are going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to merge together.

that's what I was thinking - perhaps it's time to explore another option (sounds like you need something browser based that runs across a network...)

Yeah, I'm afraid you're both correct.  I had but faint hope of getting a positive result, but I had to try - there's some pretty sharp folk hangin' out here .

Problem with another option is that I'll prolly have to do it myself  :o :-\, or pay someone to do it for me  :(.  Either way, it's gonna take more time than is presently available to give it  :(.  And I suspect it'll be definitely a non-trivial task <sigh />.  I wonder if it would even be marketable?

Well ... I kinda, sorta started :-\.  I had forgotten how much crap proprietary software Toshiba includes.  Spent much of my time researching what I can discard  ;D.

Installed Revo Uninstaller and Comodo Program Manager first of all.  (I'm OCD on tracking installs :P.)  Then started on a few other necessities.  Wouldn't you know it, there's an immediate problem  :(Every time I reboot the Satellite, I have to reset the router!  Haven't found a way around that one yet.

I'm also about to run into another problem, but it's posted in this topic.  It has to do with data replication and combination.

Ok, folk, I'm not certain this one exists, but I'll ask, just in case.

I'm using several duplicated software items on each machine.  These are mostly [PIM] databases and note-taking apps.  I need a way to keep them concurrent on each machine.  Right now, I use Syncless to replicate changes to a different data folder and to a USB key.  That works well for one (1) machine.

However, when I'm using the same software on two (2) or more machines ... let's take MyInfo as an example.

MyInfo creates .mio files, with .mib backups.  The process mentioned works well.  But when I'm actively using MyInfo on two (2) or more machines, I need a way to merge the different files so that all data, from each machine, is preserved.

Let's say I've added a new article on machine A, and copied several Web pages on machine B.  On both machines, this was copied to daily.mio.  Now I need a way to merge the two (2) daily.mio files so that the resultant daily.mio contains all the data from both machines.  Might be able to do it with WinMerge, but this needs to be an automated process.  What I need is a kind of cross between WinMerge and Syncless.  Dunno that I've ever seen such a beastie.

Any ideas?

No, creating a separate file for each machine is impractical.  Daily.toshiba.mio, daily.gw.mio, and daily.gw2.mio could be created, but each would have to be loaded and updated on each machine - a maintenance nightmare I'd prefer not to encounter- but a bigger downside would be that now I'd have to search three (3) files for information that should ideally be contained in one (1).  In addition, I'd have to triple the MyInfo file loading on each machine, which would end up being a resource dilemma.

I looked at SyncBackSE, but I don't thimk it'll do this on a file level any more than Syncless does.  Syncless does directories, and while it's a bit more flexible, SyncBackSE does the same.  None of the backup software to which I have access seems to cover this, either.

The PHP/Apache/MySQL set you need for development work? If not, then I wouldn't install as it would only eat resources and exhaust the battery early.
Basically, that's what I do.  Not that great at PHP, but I can over engineer a database like nobody's business  :P.
Since I retired, I donate a lot of my time.  Funny, but I feel more obligated than ever I did when I was getting paid for it  :-\ :-* :P.
It's not fully pertinent to your question, but the first thing I install is a second hard disk, so everytime I turn on my PC I get an automatic backup of the data from C: to the second hard disk.

Actually very relevant, but not practicable for most laptops.  However, I use a Fantom 2TB USB drive for each of the two (2) primary boxes for just that same purpose.  I may lose a system, but I won't lose data  :P.

I've been out of contact for a couple of days - don't you just hate when life interferes with what's really important? - and I'm now in search of a software KVM.  Gonna try Synergy+ again - maybe it'll work for me this time.  I have MaxiVista, but it is totally unsatisfactory.  Input Director kinda, sorta works, but it does have its foibles, not the least of which is that it tends to isolate the cursor on a slave, disallowing return to the master system.

I have yet to install the new box, but probably will start tomorrow.  Some fodder for thought in this topic so far, and I've changed a couple of priorities, as well as some software.

Thanks to all .

A full drive imaging software for backups.
Just went through that with the Dell.  Total [True Image] failure.  I'll go for backups, as such, but unless I can get CloneZilla to work - and I may have time to try that this time around - I'm soured on imaging.

'Everything' search program.
I've been using Identify Your Files [iyf-x], which has performed well on all but one (1) machine.  Have Everything loaded on a different box, but not really happy with it.  I tend to use File Search Pro (Agent Ransack, and I wish they'd kept the name  ;).)

my "copy-into-winnt" folder - a bunch of no-install-needed single-exe-file utilities I use constantly
My standalone folder is util, but same thing - and has some of the handiest utils on my systems.

WinPatrol Pro should have been on the list, but I forgot it.  Clipboard Help & Spell and Screenshot Captor will be there, but not necessary on initialization.  I'll also add the video diary, since I'll have a bit more room/RAM.  For passwords, I'm using RoboHelp Portable - prolly last time I'll upgrade it, so LastPass or KeyPass will be checked for viability (and portability).

I added an edit to the original - kvm software.  I've had varied results, so looking for something [possibly] better.

Mind you, the original list is not a complete loading, just the necessaries to get up and running.

What would be the first thing(s) you load on a new system?

Just got a new laptop, a Toshiba Satellite, Intel i7 CPU, Nvidia GT540M GPU, 6G RAM, ~700G HD.  While I need to get it active, I'm not in a time crunch - an unusual situation for me  ;D.

Since time is not hypercritical this time around, I intend to plan my initial installs.  That got me to wondering what others consider essential for system initialization.  (I will disable UAC.  Single user, allegedly knowledgeable, I just don't feel a need for it, although I could be persuaded otherwise.)  I'll partition the drive, make ~200-250 G C:\ for the OS, the rest for an E:\ data drive.

My initial load will be
  • Comodo & Revo install trackers
  • CintaNotes (for quick tagable notes)
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Apache
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Comodo firewall (maybe, haven't decided yet  :-\)
  • Libre Office (don't use it much, but need to have it handy)
  • Karen Kenworthy's Directory Printer
  • Swift To-Do List
  • All My Notes (mostly for some history notes and for avoidance of past foibles)
  • Syncless
  • RollBackRX (adjunct to system restore points

Other stuff will come to mind, but that's my initial list.  I haven't decided whether to install imaging/backup software, since recent experience has show. me a certain futility in that venue.  I'm also uncertain as to graphics software:  needs to be something vector capable.

As mentioned, though, I'm curious what you would consider an initial load?  Maybe you can cure me of some bad habits  :tellme:?

Edit
Meant to ask what you use for a software kvm.  I was not particularly happy with MaxiVista, had a bit of trouble getting Synergy+ to work, so I've been using Input Director - it works, kinda, sorta.  Maybe I need to go back and hammer on Synergy+?  Or is there something else out there that I've just not seen?

Living Room / Re: Are We Addicted to "NEW"?
« Last post by barney on April 11, 2012, 03:47 AM »
And then, there's the upgrade$ path.  Build a util.  Sell it.  Add something to it - maybe just cosmetic.  Charge for the upgrade.  Repeat as needed for financial comfort.

Mayhap we're not addicted to new, so much as encouraged to it  :(.

How many times have you seen an upgrade that was nothing more than cosmetic, with no functional value at all?  I'm not certain I can count that high.  Can you?

I'm minded of all the MS Office upgrades (just an example, not MS bashing).  The one constant was a restructured menu system.  No matter how good the actual software upgrades were - and many of them were very good - it took a month to find a particular element in the new menu system.  That was a standing joke in my last corporate venture - new Office, new menu to learn.

I don't mind paying for a legitimate upgrade, and I don't mind paying for new technology - assuming it is new - but I very much object to paying for cosmetic enhancements.

However, in answer to the original question:  No, I don't think we're addicted to new, I think we're trained to new.

no, I meant a shortcut method

You could always create a Windows shortcut, then give it admin permissions, as well as give admin permissions to existing icons on the desktop or in the Start menu.  You'd have to edit the properties of each individual one (1), however.

Right-click the desktop icon or Start menu entry, select properties, select shortcut tab, click Advanced button, select Run as Administrator checkbox, save.  Doesn't always get rid of the UAC prompt, but does allow to run most software with admin privileges.
