It's such a weird idea - to allow other to add you to a group without your consent...

My personal policy is that if you rudely add me to a group without asking my permission first, not only will I remove myself from that group, I will remove you from my friends list, as well.

I have not seen any notifications or posts in my newsfeed from any friends when they post to groups that I have not joined. I am not saying it doesn't happen, I am just saying I have not seen it.

But what I have seen is recommendations to join groups that friends have joined, and this can be a little weird at times, seeing some of the strange groups that some of my friends and family have joined.  :-[

And yes, Facebook does tell you who has joined what group. So, you might want to think twice about joining any sexual fetish groups on Facebook, if you don't want all of your friends and family knowing about it.  ;)

Also, watch out for pranks, where friends add you to a group you would rather not be in and have advertised to your friends & family. (Yup, even if you don't voluntarily join those sexual fetish groups, a friend of yours can add you to one of them as a joke, and all your friends & family will see your face and name associated with that group, recommending that they join too, on their right sidebar)

Living Room / Re: Kevin Mitnick Is Now Selling Zero-Day Exploits
« Last post by app103 on September 26, 2014, 08:05 PM »
Is that even legal? Seems like a good way to land himself back in prison.

Selling exploits to the DHS, NSA, and CIA is perfectly legal. Selling exploits for products direct to the company that's responsible for them, such as selling exploits for Google products to Google, is perfectly legal, too. Anything else is a gray area, and it would all depend on who he sold it to and what they did with it. Sell the wrong thing to the wrong person, and he could be held responsible for what they do and charged as an accessory, if they do anything illegal with it.

Others might wish to see it as him setting his own bounty price, to find exploits in software, selling them to the big developers responsible for that software so that they can fix the vulnerabilities.

But I don't see it that way.

My thought was him selling exploits to the DHS, NSA, and CIA, even if he ends up unknowingly doing it, by selling them to one of their umbrella corporations. And what do you think they would do with those exploits?

Seems less like revenge and more like greed, if you ask me.

Living Room / Kevin Mitnick Is Now Selling Zero-Day Exploits
« Last post by app103 on September 26, 2014, 08:44 AM »
This gave me a really sick feeling in my stomach.

As a young man, Kevin Mitnick became the world’s most notorious black hat hacker, breaking into the networks of companies like IBM, Nokia, Motorola, and other targets. After a stint in prison, he reinvented himself as a white hat hacker, selling his skills as a penetration tester and security consultant.

With his latest business venture, Mitnick has switched hats again: This time to an ambiguous shade of gray.

Late last week, Mitnick revealed a new branch of his security consultancy business he calls Mitnick’s Absolute Zero Day Exploit Exchange. Since its quiet inception six months ago, he says the service has offered to sell corporate and government clients high-end “zero-day” exploits, hacking tools that take advantage of secret bugs in software for which no patch yet exists. Mitnick says he’s offering exploits developed both by his own in-house researchers and by outside hackers, guaranteed to be exclusive and priced at no less than $100,000 each, including his own fee.

And what will his clients do with those exploits? “When we have a client that wants a zero-day vulnerability for whatever reason, we don’t ask, and in fact they wouldn’t tell us,” Mitnick tells WIRED in an interview. “Researchers find them, they sell them to us for X, we sell them to clients for Y and make the margin in between.”

Mitnick declined to name any of his customers, and wouldn’t say how many, if any, exploits his exchange has brokered so far. But the website he launched to reveal the project last week offers to use his company’s “unique positioning among security researchers and the hacker community” to connect exploit developers with “discerning government and corporate buyers.”

IainB - I think what mouser and Deozaan are saying is that it would be better if religious and political humor that could be considered offensive by our members was kept out of this thread. (We have the Basement for that)

I don't see a problem with light-hearted "religious" humor, though, such as the following:

A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident.

After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Luke 14:10?' The priest removed his hand.

But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Luke 14:10?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.'

Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way.

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Luke 14:10 . It said, 'Friend, go up higher, then shalt thou have glory'

Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

An English professor tries what should have been a fun writing exercise with his class, this is the result:

http://themetapicture.com/men-from-mars/

If you have ever seen or tried this kind of writing exercise with anyone before, then you know it almost always ends up a competition in who can produce the most absurd piece of text, with each trying to beat what was written before. (Oh yeah? Well, beat this! Ha!)

I have a couple of friends that decided to write a horror novel this way, on a public forum*, about a teenage serial killer , each taking turns writing a chapter. It was nuts!  ;D

* unfortunately it doesn't exist any more. :(

I am going to pretend this is a group of American high school students and a teacher (pretend there are no guns and they are all dressed differently)...and that the teacher is asking them a series of questions which causes more and more of them to lower their hands (I don't know what, didn't figure this part out yet...you suggest something), and let the text in the last box remain the same.

That would be silly humor.  ;)

Living Room / Re: Kickstarter TOS Updates
« Last post by app103 on September 19, 2014, 06:23 PM »
There is a lot more risk involved in backing a project where the creator has no intention on doing anything to bring the project into reality, and merely posted the project to make mad amounts of cash to walk away with.

The intention of these rules seems to be for there to be no "time machine" or "personal compact size pocket nuclear reactor" projects for fools to fall for, to pad the pockets of scammers.

By being required to actually do some work, show what you did with the money, and take the project as far as you can go with it, as far as the money will allow, it is supposed to lessen the risk of backers falling for a con.

And to force creators to be a bit more realistic with project goals, not to make promises they are not sure they can keep. At the same time, they are trying to keep Kickstarter from becoming the place where creators bring their far fetched dreams. If the only thing standing between your project and completion is money, then it's a lot more realistic than lofty dreams that no matter how much cash is thrown at you, you'll never be able to make it a reality.

How they plan on enforcing these rules on scammers that will attempt to walk away with the money, any way, I have no idea. I seriously doubt the threat of a lawsuit is going to scare scammers, since they aren't even afraid of a threat of jail time for their criminal activities.  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for calendar software
« Last post by app103 on September 17, 2014, 03:11 AM »
IIRC rainlendar has (or used to have) a pretty active community - plenty of skins available already so maybe something suitable already exists

But I have no reason to waste time looking for (or making) the perfect skin, when eM Client is exactly what I wanted, out of the box.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for calendar software

I agree an option for a bigger window would be nice.  As you're an artist, had you considered making your own Rainlendar skin?  I don't know what's involved in that, though.

No, I did not, since I needed this calendar to be functional and in use, ASAP. I don't really have time to fuss with something that isn't usable, out of the box. Every day that I didn't have access to a suitable calendar would be another day of viewing spreadsheets and pretending they are calendars, which doesn't work for me (completely wrong layout).
667
I just recently started using eM Client, and I am really liking it. It's a nice Outlook replacement. The calendar handles events with a date range better than anything else I have tried. (doesn't split where they overlap).  :-*

The free version can sync with up to 2 accounts, and it supports Google Apps (Gmail, calendar, contacts, GTalk).

Pro version, if you want to use it with more than 2 accounts, is $49.95. ($99.95 if you want lifetime upgrades)

It can be configured to display just the calendar (right click and uncheck anything you don't plan on using).

It can also be used with local folders, to set up calendars that don't sync with anywhere. (which is how I am using it)

It has Backup/Restore and Import/Export features, too, although I don't know how much (if any) google data can be backed up or exported. (I am using it with local folders only)

It might be worth it to you to give it a test.
668
What exactly are you referring to? Can you please give an example?
669
And here I wish I had a way to do the reverse, when using older software. I really like the newer Common Item Dialog.

How about some cool features that DC could add/host:

  • E-Mail Provider
  • Website Hosting
  • Socialization (So things like Facebook Login, Social Media Sharing etc...would get a huge boost in people coming in from those sources)
  • Document Hosting (I guess something like Google Docs)
  • A new Homepage (It hasn't been updated in forever)
  • A complete selection of EVERY piece of Software ever created on/for DonationCoder (A lot of stuff is probably lost on page 382749832 of Coding Snacks lol)

Mail provider? More headaches that it's worth, we don't need it, and there are plenty of other places you can go if you need an email service.

Website hosting? The member server already serves that purpose, while also causing mouser enough headaches.

Socialization? Perhaps it would be better to wait for DoCo 2.0.

Document hosting? Why?

A new homepage? Planned as part of Doco 2.0. ;)

An all inclusive software repository that will list every app ever made here, dragged up from the depths of the forum, aka a DoCo software repository? I offered to do that, and it would have been done already, but mouser rejected it, opting instead to make it part of DoCo 2.0.

Better - a Ninite (https://ninite.com/) like software that will help you download or update software you mentioned so you don't have to search for it ... Far fetched, but it would be nice thing to have ...

We already have DCUpdater, but it requires devs to at the very least create a text file and include it with their app (and host a copy) for it to work for updating, and giving a copy to mouser for inclusion with the Updater app, for installing from the "Available for Installation" tab.

I know someone that charges what works out to be about $0.83 per month ($10/year) for his smallest VPS package, that would give a lot better customer service than that, for free. (and yes, I already pointed Stephen in his direction) So, no, the price isn't that unrealistic.

I'm skeptical. Got a URL?

the $0.91cent monthly fee

Uh... and you expected something different? That's a completely insanely low fee for a VPS. It's nowhere near realistic.

PC software, 2D graphics, and web development...mostly front end work on static HTML sites and Wordpress related stuff, although I recently added Joomla VirtueMart to my list of skills.  :)

Oh, and I also get paid to write a lot of personalized learning paths, for people wanting to learn web development and design, with a heavy leaning towards trying to turn everyone into a well rounded full stack developer.  :D
