General Software Discussion / Re: What IRC client do you use?
« Last post by allen on September 28, 2006, 05:25 AM »
I use mIRC and/or Opera's built in client, depending.  Opera moreso, since it's always open anyway.

-- Which reminds me of an episide of the John Walsh show I watched a few years back (I watched it out of sheer hate for the man).  He'd just discovered IRC and described it as "The Dark Underbelly of the Internet" -- essentially referring to anyone on it as either (a) evil or (b) naive.  Those of us on IRC who aren't mutton heads must be cyber terrorists.  Just wanted you guys to know.  Terrorists.  :)

"ooh, look at that tree! Is that bird sleeping dad?" my son said with a grin -- I believe he's partial to the Hill version. Me too. :)

Thanks a lot DC -- I've always wanted to make my own [monospace] font -- now, to see if my will (and ability) is as strong as my wish :)

I hate change. You can imagine where I stand on the "excitement" factor :)

So true. Communication versus linguistic bastardization.  Sadly, we all know who wins . . .

Yeah, liked it way back then . . . and it's really come a long ways since.  Fortunately, if you -do- like it, it can export flash-usable art :) Best of both worlds.

It's from the UK and it comes in a DVD case with some documentation.

Documentation is good! I don't feel so bad about the shipping now.

So I decided to try to look into what I had bought, and I can't find any information on X1. Just Xtreme. Are they basically the same thing but with Xtreme has a few more features?

For the most part.  Xara X1 was undoubtedly a solid version of Xara, though some of the additions to xtreme are really cool (and definitely worth the upgrade if you find you like X1 -- no better vector editing app out there ;)

Changes are here--http://xara.com/products/xtreme/whatsnew.asp

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Feature limits for clipboard extenders
« Last post by allen on September 25, 2006, 04:39 PM »
Just a quick note while you're reviewing clipboard extenders, AceText doesn't offer any degree of richtext that I'm aware of, and I use it. A lot. :)  There are some more indepth comparisons floating around here somewhere, there are quite a few clipboard extender apps around all of which are "the best" depending on the needs of the user in question.

+1 vote to what you said.  Modern super-short-hand for "I stand in agreement with you!" :)

As an adamant keyboard user, I'm tickled pink with your implementation.  You've always been kind enough to cater to keyboard and mouse users alike, I was curious to see how you'd do it -- hopefully the mousies are as happy as I am. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: foobar...honestly...WTF?! WTF?!
« Last post by allen on September 25, 2006, 03:49 PM »
Foobar isn't a media player replacement for you if you just want a simple application that does what you expect it to do.  It's to media players what linux is to operating systems -- potentially immensely versatile/customizable/powerful but inherently unusable for anyone who isn't a geek expecting to spend a great deal of time tweaking.

This has been my primary graphic design/editing software for quite some time now, have been using it since it was Corel Xara -- an amazing application that I don't regret having paid full price for.  But man, that 19 dollar price tag is sweet.

The problem, as near as I can tell, is not that the author is spreading the word -- everyone here knows about spreading the word about your own and your favorite software.  Grass roots is good.  The problem is when the word being spread is potentially false or at least greatly exaggurated -- if not altogether contradicted by the actual data available.

Fine, mouser. I'm not using Screenshot Captor anymore.  I'm going to use ACA. So there! ;D

Yeah, more of the dirty publicity spamming.  could they be the author? :)

It's interesting that ACA was the only of his/her favorite apps worth linking to. It's as if the others were thrown on there as tokens :P

Not only is it not free, it's very much not free -- and has apparently taken a price hike.  The more info page says it's 39.95 while the checkout says it's 51 dollars and something (actually 64 bucks, but there's a 20% discount) -- so even with the discount it's more than the info page claims :)

Such inconsistencies bother me -- especially considering the price tag and the fact that -none- of the accolades link to actual offsite reviews.

For my money, it's screenshot captor all the way.

Best Dialog Extender / Re: FileBox Extender 1.91.02 - Now FREE!
« Last post by allen on September 22, 2006, 05:49 AM »
Thus far, I really don't care for DF - I'm unable to find any keyboard friendliness at all -- the one simplistic, mouse-required menu isn't really exciting me :)

This is sad news . . . I'd grown quite fond of the app.  My other favorite, File-Ex, hasn't been updated in a long time either. Wonder if they're calling it quits for vista as well.  I hate when software I love dies.

I've installed tinyspell because of this thread -- and I guess nearly a week later, I love it.  The keyboard shortcuts are great and thus far it's proven more help than hurt.  You should hear it beep when I'm drunk, though . . . :)

My long time favorite application is EditPad Pro.  Find & Run Robot has quickly become an application I can't imagine living without.  Like you, Z, XYPlorer has quickly become an absolute favorite application.  That's my top three, but there are more applications I love . . .

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you organize your email?

It's handy over newsgroups and public posting -- and with submission forms that will take it. It's true, however, that many don't allow it.  Actually, my address was rejected the other day because it has a dot in the alias . . . <grumbles>

Fortunately, gmail addresses are valid with or without dots. So my.name@gmail is the same as myname@gmail.

Argh, my girlfriend just managed to tie it with one single attempt, following one of the guides I failed miserably on. HUMILIATION! >_<

In your defense, she had the clear advantage of being able to see not only the guide but the tie directly while you were left looking at it from atop, which is an awkward angle at best.  I'm assuming you were wearing it at the time.  Otherwise, there's no excuse :P
