General Software Discussion / Re: Recycling hardware
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 25, 2013, 08:19 PM »
If you decide you can't use it or don't want it, you can always donate it to Goodwill, even if it doesn't work.  They will either find a new home for it or recycle it and put the money into the Goodwill services.  I just gave them an older Sony single disc CD player and a broken microwave oven.

You may be talking about something like Fix-it Utilities.  It will automatically disable (if you choose) a bunch of background task and services, plus give you the choice of adding others to the list.  It will set itself to run on every boot-up, but you can remove it from auto-starting.

HTC Settlement Could Alter Mobile Security and Privacy Landscape

HTC America's settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Friday has the potential to revamp not only how hardware manufacturers handle the security and privacy of mobile devices, but how carriers do so, as well.

“In many ways, this settlement is a shot across the bow of the handset and wireless industry and their practice of selling and abandoning devices after a few months,” said activist Chris Soghoian, principal technologist and senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union. “If I’m in those businesses, I’m seriously looking at this settlement.”

Living Room / Re: PayPal users are frauds :-(
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 25, 2013, 07:06 PM »
I've read horror stories about "chargebacks" on paypal.  It's only dangerous for sellers of big ticket items, which is why I won't accept paypal for large purchases.  Apparently, from what I understand (but yet still don't understand) is someone will buy a car through paypal.  They take possession of the car and then make a chargeback to paypal for the order, however that works.  When it's all over and done with, you don't have the car or the money and paypal isn't liable in any way, which pretty much sucks.  I've had people try to buy big ticket items from me using paypal in the past, and I knew for a fact they were trying to scam me this way.  I emailed them back "Sorry, cash only"......
It's getting to where it's almost impossible to sell now days.  Crooks make fake cashiers checks and money orders.  By the time the check/money order bounces back the crook is long gone and untraceable and your out of the item and money.  And right when we thought paypal was there to save the day, the crooks figures out a way to screw you through them....

Can't forget his adventure in rap music...

Wow, I had forgot all about that!  I must have seen it 50 times. lol

Yes, his humor was disquieting because it was so self-deprecating, but that was his whole schtick; summed up in his famous tagline "I don't get no respect".  It's funny because we all have some degree of insecurity, and in some smaller or larger way can then sympathize; thus it becomes cathartic to laugh at those small insecurities brought larger than reality via the guise of absurd theater.

... or something like that.   :-[

That's pretty much it, that was "his thang".  He was also jewish and made quite a few jewish jokes in his career.  Growing up, Rodney was one of my favorite comedians, never missed a comedy special he starred in.  In Caddyshack, he was hilarious while playing the same self-depreciating part, he was a genius at it.  He was a truly great comedian and actor and will be sorely missed by many.  Rest in peace Rodney.

@Tinman57: Sorry to be so ignorant, but could you explain that joke to me about the STAAR exams? Or is it the grammatical mistake of "high students"?

Yep, that's why I highlighted it.....

It's a decent car, and wasn't too expensive. They go forever if you take care of them. And, I'm due for a tune up.

It's really hard to beat that German engineering, nice ride Renny.  I couldn't list all the cars/trucks I've owned over the years, just way too many to list.  Just in the last 5 years I've owned 6 vehicles.  I just sold a 1970 Mustang Mach I that I've had for years and years, it was my sunny Sunday driver.  lol

Well I showed my Hummer, guess I could put my car in here too.  A turbocharged 2011 VW GTI.  Fast little bugger, 0-60 in 6.9 secs and 150 mph top end, and still gets 33 mpg highway....  And oh, that German engineering!

  Got this little tidbit out of the local paper about the STAAR exams of Texas;

Several bills so far seek to at least scrap a requirement that high students scores on STAAR count toward 15% of thir final grades in core classes.

My Hummer H2.  I like it because it's wider than the average truck, it sits way up in the air, it has 4X4, can haul heavy loads like my boat, and has enough room to carry a small troup of soldiers.   ;)

Knowing the wonders possible with Photoshop...and at the risk of being called "politically incorrect"...is it just me...or does it look like all the faces in that picture might actually be the same face?

Living Room / CISPA Back In Congress - Take Action
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 18, 2013, 08:47 PM »

CISPA, the Privacy-Invading Cybersecurity Spying Bill, is Back in Congress

It's official: CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, has been reintroduced in the House of Representatives. It's the contentious bill that would provide a poorly-defined "cybersecurity" exception to existing privacy law. CISPA offers broad immunities to companies who choose to share data with government agencies -- including the private communications of users -- in the name of cybersecurity. It also creates avenues for companies to share data with any federal agencies, including military intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency.
EFF is adamantly opposed to CISPA. Join us in calling on Congress to stop this and any other privacy-invasive cybersecurity legislation.

Do I detect the subtext "Meh" in your response?  :P  Hey, all I'm saying is that it's kinda cool that a USB drive I bought years ago is still functioning, and functioning well at that...

Yeah, amazing considering Seagate used to have the "stiction" problem with most all their drives.  I can remember when Seagate was the top dog of hard drives before the stiction problems ruined their reputation...

Living Room / Iron Pants
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 16, 2013, 07:43 PM »
This isn't a joke, but it is pretty funny if not ludicrous:

CURSES! FOILED AGAIN: It is now illegal in Colorado to wear aluminum
underwear. "This is serious business," insists State Sen. Stephanie
Takis, who sponsored the bill. "We have laws against using crowbars as
theft devices, but if you were lining your underwear with aluminum
foil, that was not a crime." It is now. Apparently, shoplifters found
such so-called "iron pants" allow them to sneak stolen items past
anti-theft scanners at store doors. The law also allows store security
officers to detain people who "crackle when they walk," but provides an
exception for aluminum britches worn for "personal amusement."

(Colorado Springs Gazette) ...Which is probably covered under vice
  statutes.

Living Room / Office 2013 Ripoff

[ And yet another reason why I'm dumping MS....]

Office 2013 retail licensing change ties suite to specific PC forever

A retail copy of Office 2013 is permanently tied to the first PC on which it's installed, preventing customers from deleting the suite from one machine they own and installing it on another.

The move is a change from past Office end-user licensing agreements (EULAs), experts said, and is another way Microsoft is pushing customers, especially consumers, to opt for new “rent-not-own” subscription plans.

“That’s a substantial shift in Microsoft licensing,” said Daryl Ullman, co-founder and managing director of the Emerset Consulting Group, which specializes in helping companies negotiate software licensing deals. “Let’s be frank. This is not in the consumer’s best interest. They’re paying more than before, because they’re not getting the same benefits as before.”
