General Software Discussion / POS program for meals
« Last post by techidave on February 10, 2010, 11:24 AM »
I had a hospital ask me about using a program to track employee lunches.  Something that would have the capability to scan a bar code.  I don't think it would need to do menus or anything like that.  Perhaps it should have the ability for billing also.

Any ideas on what could be used?  I don't think it would have to be free but should be somewhat user friendly.

thanks,

dave

Living Room / exchange 2003 and blackberry
« Last post by techidave on February 02, 2010, 05:35 AM »
My superintendent informed me last night he would like to get 4 or 5 blackberries.  we are currently running exchange 2003.  I believe any upgrade to a newer exchange and also a blackberry server is out of the question.

I have been told that MS has a free "client" that will allow exchange 2003 to work with them but I haven't been able to find it on google.

does anyone here have any experience with this kind of thing?

thanks,
Dave

there is nothing pertaining to the crash.  the automatic restart is disabled but no BSOD.

perhaps I should try another power supply to see what happens.

thanks!

Living Room / where does XP store its logs?
« Last post by techidave on January 16, 2010, 11:05 AM »
I have a couple of computers that one of my teacher's tell me is crashing.  But when I get there it seems to work just fine.

I have opened event viewer and am not finding anything in there.  Are there more logs kept that might be stored deep in the bowels of windows?  :D  And how might I view them if there is?

To my knowledge there isn't any error windows that popup or any other kind of messages.

any ideas?

I was printing a pdf over the weekend and the length of time it took to spool it was amazing. (on adobe reader 9).  it seems like it was only a 1 meg file anyway.  I do know that a job with images on it takes longer to spool than a plain text document does.  If I am not mistaken then pdf's are an "image", which is one of the reasons they look so nice.

i know that more memory will help with printing bigger jobs.  for a moment there, I was thinking that more memory in a printer would be like more memory in a computer.   :-[

I know I have quite a few printers that came with the default memory whatever that was.  I was just looking for a quick and easy to way to get that information.

I can always use the web access part and find that out.

I know there are some older printers that get hit quite hard and if they had a low amount of memory, say 16 meg or something then I could upgrade it.

It was just a thought as I was being lazy.  This is probably getting beyond the original intent of the program.

Ok,SJ, I have been thinking about this for a bit and just decided to ask you about it.  Is it possible the PC will report the amount of RAM installed??

By the way, I ran this program on a new-to-me network and it worked beautifully.  Showed me all the printers on the network.

thanks again!

Anyone else 'working from home' this week?  ;)

at 7 pm here in the midwest (western Kansas) it is -2 F.  Even if it snows a foot most people will still go to work.  It just takes a little longer.  I am ready for warmer weather.

excuse me it was 7 AM.

Living Room / pda web browser for wm5
« Last post by techidave on January 05, 2010, 09:54 PM »
I am having problems find the answer and wondered if any of my DC friends would know.

I have a Dell Axim X51V with Windows Mobile 5 on it.  It comes with Pocket IE.  I have been searching for another browser like Chrome, Opera, or Firefox.  When I do find one, it seems to be for a SmartPhone of some kind.  Is this compatible with my PDA?

I tried one called Webby but it required the .NET Compact Framework and has adds in it.

If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.   :D

Read this thread as it may work for you.  a few programs that will allow you to set the volume when you log into windows.  However, I don't know if it will work for you in your case or not.  But it could be an option to try.  The programs are free so it wouldn't cost anything to try.

« Last post by techidave on January 02, 2010, 03:53 PM »
thanks for the reply, phitsc.  Your reply got me thinking that it hadn't yet indexed that download folder.  And that is what the problem was.  I had missed that part of the setup window that tells it where and what folders to index.

I did look for it but didn't find it until today.  The bad part of it is, it's not that hidden.  :-[

Is it possible to search directly from within a folder?  For example, I have a c:\downloads folder and I would like to search for the quicktime installer that I downloaded.  If I type ws quicktime, i do not get any returns.  If i type ws downloads, it will find this folder and once I open that folder then I can see my quicktime file.  I did have to add c:\downloads to FARRs search folders option.

Just wondering if there was a more direct way.  Thanks for a great app!

for some reason I don't have much success with screencasting software.  Doesn't seem to matter which one either.  One of these days I will get brave enough to try it again after a few years away from them.

What program was used to make the DC screenshots or maybe screencast?  Not sure if it was Mouse or Joker, but I think Mouser since it had a Brother printer in it that matches his 2nd post.

No your not ranting.  I find it very informative but I don't always understand 100% of the time.

Is it possible to add to the admin window the option to save the ip range?  Your right for the non techie types, it might be better to have the default like it is now.

I just tried to open the Administrative window using the Ctrl + Alt + F8 and nothing happens.  I am on build 175.  I tried it on one of the earlier builds and it didn't work either, I just forgot to report it.

Is it also possible to retain the IP range that was last used?  When the program is closed and re-popened it goes back the original default settings.

Is this normal?  I changed the toner in a HP 2300 Laserjet today.  I did a page config sheet before and after the change.  When I ran the Print Countster scan, it added a page in the total page count column.

I just rescanned it a couple of times and it didn't add anymore to the count.

Thanks for trying Joker.  I hadn't noticed about some of the bugs  you fixed but I don't normally use the program that way.  I usually know the range my printers are in so I only have to scan 30 or so ips.

But next week I start helping at another school district and their printers are on dhcp and occasionally the ips get switched on printers and it goes to a different printer than they want.

I have read that on the old computer it "needs to be deauthorized" before doing anything.  is this really necessary and what happens if it doesn't get done?
674
from what i have read, Apple doesn't make it easy when you need to move your itunes to another computer because of hard drive crash or virus infection.  I will be using an external hard drive as opposed to cd or dvds.  Her library is bigger than what her iPod will hold, so that isn't an option.

Will the standard windows copy and paste work with out presenting problems?  I have found a few pieces that claim to do it but they do cost money. Like igadget or ipodcopy.  I am looking for something free for this particular client.

I have found this article here, is it really this easy?

What do my fellow dc'ers have to say about this topic?
