just let Memtest run over night

Assuming there's "enough night" for it to finish with some RAM configurations. :P

One of my favorite musicians and songs.

Loreena McKennet performing All Souls Night from her Live at the Alhambra concert.

Fans of exotic (at least to many Western listeners) instruments will especially enjoy the backing orchestra.

The sound quality on this clip doesn't do the DVD justice. If this is your sort of thing, don't miss checking it out.

SBAC: Your BSODs could be Comodo, that's definitely something I'd check early on, but do seem potentially hardware-related. Run a memory scan (Memtest86+ is my recommendation). Also, did you actually move/change any hardware *inside* the case recently? If so you might have bumped something...

You could try some "quick and dirty" elimination rounds to save time with Memtest86+ since the in-depth scans take a while to run.

Try pulling out half your RAM and the see if you're running into the same problems. If so, replace those with the other half and see if the problem goes away. If that's the case, a suspect bad stick is in the first group. Then try alternate loading the sticks in the suspect group one at a time until you get your error.

Once you've identified the "most likely bad" stick, pull all the other memory out, install the bad one and run Memtest to confirm it's the culprit. It takes a lot less time to test one RAM stick than it would all four if you're reasonably sure you've identified the bad guy.

If the suspect stick passes Memtest's scan (or if you get the same errors no matter which RAM sticks are installed) then there's a chance there's a mobo or memory slot hardware issue. You can do a similar process of elimination round on the slots to see if one of those is giving you hassles. If it doesn't matter which slots are used, or what RAM is installed, then there's a good chance it's a board issue. If updated motherboard firmware and drivers don't fix the problem (you already checked for those, right?) you may have a flaky mobo. Bummer if so... Check and see if there's been a recall or announcement at the mfg's site. You may be able to get a free replacement if so.

Note: Due to the low-level integration of video, a spooky video card can also cause a huge number of weird problems that don't seem related to video. So I'd also suggest you run your manufacturer's video board diagnostic (if they offer one) before deciding your mobo is shot.

I recently donated a nice PC somebody gave me last summer to a non-profit. It was throwing BSODs every hour or two. The owners decided to toss it and buy a new one because a big store service department ("after extensive testing" $$) told them the motherboard was shot. It wasn't. Once the bum vid card got replaced it worked like a dream.

Luck!

I'm liking Spicebird (it's been mentioned on DC a few times).
Based on Mozilla code, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about it that I like very much, where I disliked Thunderbird for the same (read: nebulous) reasons.
Handles multiple accounts pretty well, and setup is 5-year-old-level easy.

Je ne sais quoi indeed!

Just downloaded it to give it a try. I do like it better than TBird, and am also having a problem saying exactly why. Maybe it's because it feels lighter and smoother in some indefinable way compared to "the bird"?

Handles IMAP very nicely. And to your point, setup is a breeze. Gave it a Gmail account and password and it handled all the server settings for me. Nice! A few seconds later it synced a good number of folders and messages and still felt light and snappy afterwards

Hmm...gonna have to feed it for a week or two and then decide if it's allowed to stay.

Thx for the suggestion.

They solved it another way, they make the code that might be affected available http://www.postbox-inc.com/coveredcode

I don't think doing that necessarily complies with the conditions of the GPL (which has some words about not being allowed to "cherry pick" which licenses apply to what if you use GPL code in a larger work) but I may be wrong - and I've strayed far enough off topic that we'll leave that for another day and another discussion. Better yet, let's leave that to Mozilla since Thunderbird is their child.

Apologies to all for going OT.  :-[

Why? Thunderbird is not licensed under the GPL.

It's officially released under MPL along with GPL and LGPL since sections of the incorporated code base had already been released under those licenses. Which Mozilla honors BTW. GPL requires source code be made available if any GPLed code is used in a subsequent piece of software. GPL doesn't go away just because you wrote a new license (or some code) around it. "In for a penny - in for a pound" as the saying goes.

FWIW Mozilla's main concern is protecting the use of it's name and trademarks. They're not overly concerned about their code because they already view it as open and make it available.

So I currently use postbox which is a shareware cleaned up version of Thunderbird for both mac and windows - neat features

Hope it's an independently developed and code-clean TBird lookalike rather than a "cleaned up" version. Because if it's just a reworked and recompiled copy of TBird with some proprietary code mixed in (something I've long suspected) they'll have to make their source code available. Otherwise it's a pretty serious GPL violation.

I also just noticed that when I rebooted and the part which shows all the hard drives coming up...that is usually very quick, this time it had to wait several seconds to detect the each drive.  Made me think I have a motherboard problem.

Check your CMOS battery. Oddball start ups and especially disk and other hardware detection issues are often caused by a dying battery. It's cheap and easy to replace so hopefully that's the source of the problem.

@SB - ok, looks like I'm outvoted on the 8Gb vs 16Gb argument by DC folk who are currently using 16, so please disregard my earlier questioning of how advantageous it would be.  :)

Not a problem.  Knowing myself, I tend to go overboard initially anyway, so in the end, the advice was good.

Fair enough. I'll leave you to the "power users" - most of which those here are (as per JJ  ;)) - and which I definitely am not (as per 40hz  :P).  ;D

Vodka is good with food I find - saw some programme a few years back about an old russian guy and they were saying that it was traditionally drank with meals - I mean before people started drinking it around the clock :)

I prefer vodka with food - and whisky without.

Draw what conclusions you will. But please remember my forebears usually made alcohol out of anything they could put in a bucket - and dinner out of anything that couldn't crawl back out of one - so I'm probably not the best person to ask when it comes to cuisine. My Russian grandfather considered ketchup - or 'catsup' if you prefer - a delicacy. (And put it on almost everything.)

I'm suspicious of any drink that requires freezing in order to be palatable (jeez, am I getting snobby now :-\)

I don't think so. I think it's just proof you've become an adult somewhere along the line.

I had fond memories of Moskovskaya vodka, got a bottle of it lately - it was good, but didnt pass the drink-it-like-a-whiskey test very well (not chilled, tiny dash of water). Tastes reasonably good, nice marzipany aftertaste, doesnt smell great though. But maybe that's not fair if it's meant to be drank cold... (it is cheap - for the price I'd say it's very good).

Nothing wrong with paying a little less than you have to for something good that you enjoy. (Gonna have to see if I can find that one and give it a try!)

---

Re: Chopin - Testers for a Slate article liked it. FWIW, I've tried most of the brands mentioned in the article and I agree with the ranking and also with most of the comments. But take it with a sip of vodka - because I'm not a "real" vodka drinker.

I can't think of anything anybody* would want to do on a PC that could justify more than 8Gb of RAM with today's current or projected technologies. And that includes running a few virtual machines simultaneously while also working with Photoshop and browsing the web. (You little multi-tasker, you! ;D)

About the only real (normal person) 'workstation' intensive process I can think of is CGI rendering. And if you're doing a lot of that, having more CPUs (as in a small cheap render farm) is far more efficient than having a single beefed-up workstation. And that includes those that support dual chips.

Suggestion: whenever I'm in doubt or looking for solid advice on RAM, I'll web over to Crucial Memory Products and use their Memory Advisor Tool found on the homepage. I have never been steered wrong with this tool. Also check out their forums. Some good discussions about RAM can be found there. (Note: usual caveats regarding forum recommendations apply.)

If you want to shop price before you buy, you can always take the specs from what Crucial recommends and look at comparable products from quality RAM providers like Kensington et al.

Luck!

* Note: I seem to recall a few DCers (Carol or f0dder maybe?) were running with 16Gb. Maybe they and some of 'those that have' could weigh-in on this? I'm curious too since I'll need to seriously start thinking about a new build sometime this year.

This looks very interesting for OpenDNS users: DNSCrypt – Critical, fundamental, and about time.

Does sound good. Too bad it's still Macintosh only. *sigh*

I use OpenDNS and install it on every computer I am given to "fix".
Very happy with their service, no complaints

Pretty much what I do too! Wonder why everyone doesn't.

Also, this:
http://blog.opendns....sopa-and-protect-ip/

The only problem with Dave Ulevitch's letter was when he said this:

It’s likely that if SOPA and PIPA existed when I started my company, we would have
incorporated outside of the United States and all of the jobs and investment that I have put
into the economy would have been taken elsewhere. I expect many businesses will make
the decision to incorporate elsewhere should this legislation pass and it’s possible that
existing corporations will relocate to more entrepreneur-friendly countries.

I say that because arguing about the loss of a relatively small company's investment and employment numbers - when Congress is faced with alleged losses (real or imagined) from piracy to an existing multi-billion dollar industry that's slipping anonymous tens of millions into political campaigns for the upcoming presidential election - is akin to spitting on a bonfire with the intent of putting it out.

Don't count on Congress to be forward looking when money or jobs are at stake. They are far more likely to subsidize or bail out obsolete or corrupt industries than they are to do the right thing and allow necessary economic changes to take place. 'Kicking the can,' as far down the street as possible, is a time honored tradition in American politics.

One of the most recurrent arguments used by obsolete businesses is (in a sniveling whine): "But Senator! It will cost our nation jobs! You're talking about taking the food off the tables of hard working Americans!"

Usually it's immediately followed with a hushed and indignant: "And may I remind you Senator - these people vote."

Faced with the prospect of losing businesses like OpenDNS, as opposed to giving the wildly spending ($500M+ per feature film) movie industry a little kick in its ass, it's a small guess which way their votes are going to go.

We are living in times of political hysteria and hyperbole. Noble causes - nay, even common sense - has largely gone out of vogue in most political circles. And these days, rocking the boat is seldom seen as beneficial to political careers or careerists.

Okay, any sympathy anybody may have had for Mr. Christoforo at this point should now be out the forking window.

He has proven himself to be the most gravity-warping epithet for neandertalic behavior patterns I have ever seen, encountered or read about.

Oh yeah! This guy has personal "issues." All that semi-literate macho ranting and 'godfather' talk accomplishes nothing other than to paint a pretty clear picture of who this guy is and how he grew up. He really needs to get professional help before he gets himself into some serious trouble. Enrolling in an anger management program (and a spelling class) probably wouldn't hurt either.

So PeerBlock is reputable? Anyone here running it? I'm considering doing so...

I've run it for a few months, more as a science fair project than anything else. It does what it says - which is block things. It's like an ad blocker in that respect. It uses lists. It's benign in that it doesn't redirect. It just blocks. How well it can protect you from getting caught "liberating" media assets for personal consumption is anybody's guess. But it does seem to accomplish it's goals more often than not.

Since I'm mildly nervous about using torrents, I've got it installed, even though I don't use them for much other than obtaining giant BSD and Linux ISOs. Works fine for me.

I'm particularly annoyed by the new arm-twisting (blackmailing?) going on in software circles where you're now required to "like" a piece of software on Facebook (or Tweet it) before you're allowed to download a lite or evaluation copy.

I'm surprised Facebook even allows that since it devalues the whole "liking" process.

Same goes for only being allowed to join something via your Facebook account. One place even had this helpful bit of information if you didn't have a Facebook account and still wanted to join. It said: Still want to become a member but don't have a Facebook account? Click here.

Cute.

PS to 40hz- Really? And here I thought Pennsylvania had some restrictive laws!

It's gotten marginally quieter now that former AG Dick Blumenthal got himself elected to the U.S. Senate. For a long time he was suffering from that syndrome that plagued so many AGs back in the 90s and early 2Ks called Elliot Spitzer Envy.

Hopefully he'll get some of the recognition and acclaim he feels he so richly deserves at his new job.

Definitely do PeerBlock if nothing else. Overhead/latency is negligible. I'm amazed at the number of P2P links PeerBlock jumps on.

Now tell me again that vodka's only for getting drunk with? ;)

Didn't say only for. Said it was for. ;D

But to reiterate, a fine Scotch whisky is *not* (as in "not done") for getting drunk with. You could flirt with a mild buzz perhaps. But falling down drunk is best left for the Eastern European distiller's artistry. Or, in a pinch, a fine Sake. ;)

----

So! You like it fresh out of the freezer, just like my kinfolk drink it huh? I'm not a Stoli fan myself. Seems a little one-dimensional although I'll give it full props for it's smoothness. I vastly prefer Chopin, at room temp, or very slightly cooled, myself. For serving very cold I'm partial to Ketel One. It has a little more 'attitude' and bite - which goes well with lower serving temperatures IMO. But it's ridiculously overpriced for what it is since it's now become very popular. I'd try a glass at some bar before I dropped the asking $36+ USD for a liter. K1 has a unique albeit very vodka-ey flavor which some people find a bit too much at times.

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?

Two books by Peter Mayle:

PMDogs.jpg

A Dog's Life - first person narrative from the dog's point of view. The thoughts and reminiscences of a dog of dubious parentage living in Provence. Part Mark Twain, part Boswell, part Jerome K. Jerome. A fun little read if you like this sort of thing. (I do.)

If, like me, you have a logical turn of mind, a self-indulgent nature, and a frequently dormant conscience, there is a certain aspect of human behavior that can put an immense strain on the patience. It's spoken of, always in sanctimonious tones, as moderation - not too much of this, not too much of that, diet and abstinence and restraint, colonic irrigation, cold baths before breakfast, and regular readings of morally uplifting tracts. You must have come across all this and worse if you have any friends from California. Personally, I'm a great believer in the philosophy of live and let live, as long as you keep your proclivities to yourself. Follow the road of denial if that's what you want, and all I'll say is more fool you and spare me the details.

PMCezanne.jpg

Chasing Cezanne: A Novel - one of the better art theft caper (with a touch of humor) stories out there. Great characters, fun plot, perfect pacing, elegant locations, pretty women, a bon vivant art forger, and Mayle's trademark urbane and witty verbal exchanges.

Pick one or both. Either is the perfect way to pass and hour or two, snugged up in your favorite chair, while nursing a nice glass of something special on a quiet winter's afternoon with the house completely to yourself...

Ah! Such bliss...

 :)

Threats generally aren't actionable unless they present an imminent physical danger.

Really? Try living in Connecticut. Verbal and online threats tend to get taken pretty seriously around here depending upon what's been said and to whom. And if there's a minor involved, it gets completely nuts. Especially now that cyber-bullying is in the news so much. Even megacorps are hopping on the bandwagon by going after certain persistent bloggers for the "emotional distress" their negative comments have caused their officers and employees.

Quote
If Mr. C has been around as long as he's said he has - and allegedly has 125 web professionals at his beck & call, it would be an easy matter to fake some threatening and harassing actions. And based on the bad temper, threats, and lack of judgement displayed in some of his communications, I wouldn't put it beyond possible.

In reality - Christoforo was the sole employee of Ocean Marketing. There were no other employees.   Grin   What a guy!

Yeah really. One of the biggest risks you run when you're bluffing or outright BSing is to be taken seriously. Like the saying goes: Don't let your mouth write a check yer ass can't cover.

@Ren - Nice find! Some good stuff in there. 8)

Just be careful when selecting alternate DNS servers. No solution is ever perfect. Be sure you know where they're pointing and who you're dealing with. There are many compromised and nefarious pseudo-DNS servers out there. I'd guess a good many more than there are 'good guy' servers trying to help you protect your privacy. And even the 'good guy' DNS servers can be compromised or hijacked every so often.

Just something to keep in mind. :)
