N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013 Release - Skyrim Character Manager
« Last post by wraith808 on January 12, 2013, 04:49 PM »
Ok... I know what the problem is.  I put the database file into the executable directory.  I should have put it in the appdata directory as with the configuration file, or at the very least put a configuration in there in case someone needed to move it.  I'll fix that in another release, but in the meantime, you can (a) change the security on the db file, or (b) put the installation somewhere other than the program files directory.  Sorry about the inconvenience; I plan to have another release out this week with that and the ability to specify the executable to run (as I didn't know some people ran other executables other than the skyrim one to launch it).

Thanks!

Sorry about the problems you're having... it doesn't seem that you're doing anything wrong, so a couple of questions.

1. When you say that all of the buttons are grayed out, specifically what buttons are enabled (I'm assuming the settings button is... but what others?)
2. In the directory, check the skyrimcharactermanagerdb.vdb4 and skyrimcharactermanagerdb.vdc4 for their security settings.  They should be non-read only and full control should be allowed in the security settings.
3. Check your configuration file: it should be located in C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\ThinkShui\Forms\SkyrimCharacterManager.Shell.Shell and be called SkyrimCharacterManager.Shell.Shell.xml.  It's just an xml file, so should open in any text editor.  Make sure your directories are saved.

If the add button is disabled, then either a) the database couldn't be accessed, which it appears from the error, or b) your directories weren't saved- but if you didn't get an error saving those settings, then I think it's more than likely a.

Thoughts?

Cranio, I will PM you in regards to this.  I do not wish this topic to get de-railed again.

(I will be changing my forum sig, to state, that all my posts, and comments, are my own personal opinion)

That won't necessarily have the desired effect- the Global Moderator tag speaks louder than any .sig

It still works fine, and I haven't died yet, but I will be wary in case it gets worse (will try to refrain from sucking it.....).

I'd... replace it before then.  That's just me.  I don't do sparks.  And I don't take a chance with electricity.  For me or my devices.

I have it.  I have an iPad 3.  I had it when I had an iPad 1.  There's apparently *something* that's different from device to device, because on neither of my iPads is it sluggish.  Don't know what I can give you beyond personal experience.

$30? :p

I didn't pay $30 for it... there's always specials and jockeying on the AppStore.  Check appshopper.com- that's how I keep up with shifting prices. It even has historical prices.

I saw two different reviews that said it performed like a dog on an iPad 3. One recommended it but only as a means to have your documents with you. It specifically stated you should do most of the heavy lifting on a Mac and I don't have a Mac so...

Also, it gets dinged for being sluggish in several reviews on the store page.

The author seems to miss the point about what a tablet is for. Some decent criticisms for the iPad mini though.

I looked at several of the ones you listed and for now I have settled on Notebooks. Circus Whatever, despite the revolting name, seemed to have a lot of very nice features, but it got panned as being practically unusable due to sluggishness.

I don't have a problem with sluggishness, either on my iPad or on my Mac, so I'm not sure what they're referring to.

We really do need to start looking beyond this one planet again. If for no other reason than embracing the wisdom of not keeping all your eggs in one basket. I personally think of the various manned space efforts as the ultimate embodiment of an "off premise" backup system.

Living Room / The Best of Kickstarter 2012

Kickstarter has released a 'Best of' for the year 2012.  Some really interesting projects (and some really strange ones) there that I hadn't even heard of before, and some really interesting statistics.  I don't really like the format of the presentation, but it was interesting enough that I read the whole thing. :)

In the 70's every was sure we'd have flying cars by now.

I remember reading old Popular Mechanics magazines with flying cars, jet packs, and underwater cities. The future then looked a lot better than the future we're looking at now.

Then again, look at Popular Mechanics now, and you'll be saying that the Popular Mechanics then looked better than the Popular Mechanics now.

Is the longstanding discount for TheBat! still active?

I've culled the inactive discounts. The ones in the Shareware Discount Codes Here board are all active and verified.

The ones I find myself going back to (depending on the task)

IA Writer
WriteRoom
Textastic
enso Writer
Notebook

iA Writer and Writeroom are easy to use on any other computer because of their sync.  Notebook is cool because of Sync also- but it's only available for Mac, so that cuts out using my desktop, only my laptop.  I love enso, but it's sync to Dropbox isn't automatic.  Same with Textastic- it would be the one to beat with code editing also, other than the fact that the sync is manual.

Just like on Windows, I'm addicted to editors, so the ones I've tried include:
My Writing Nook
Notebooks
Textastic
Noteshelf
Notes Plus
iA Writer
enso Writer
Essay
Writing Kit
Note & Share
WriteRoom
Textkraft EN
CleanWriter
Circus Ponies Notebook
Evernote
Noterize
Penultimate
MobileNoter
Notability
Simplenote
PlainText
WritePad
Nimbus Plus
Nebulous Notes

There are some other code specific ones, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.  I've been looking at trying Write 2, specifically because it lets you use your iPhone as a keyboard which I think is cool :)

If I may ask, what did you think of Textilus?

That said, I completely don't trust NASA to do this. The overall structure of NASA (some specific success stories like the Mars Spirit rover not withstanding) is entrenched in the top-down risk-averse structure that's dedicated primarily to ensuring its own continued existence. I'd be much happier to see it being attempted by an organization like Space X, or Planetary Resources.

+1000.  NASA is at its core a government agency.  With all of the negatives that implies.  I can't help but think that if they'd started incentives for private companies to get involved, we'd be much more advanced than we are today.  Just the number of accidents that we've had doing what should be routine (not to say that they aren't incredible accomplishments, but still), says a lot about NASA IMO.

- learned something new, thank you! (You can't google for pictures if you don't have some search term, now you gave me the search terms needed for finding!)

Now learn something "new": Go to Google Images, drag a copy of my picture and drop it on the search box, and without typing any search terms, you will instantly get this:
 (see attachment in previous post)

The strange thing is, it's not searching on the image.  I 'edited' my avatar from a different image.  Even though it has been edited (the face removed), it still shows the images for the original image- not the edited one, even though I use it on several sites.
