General Software Discussion / Re: SoftMaker Office 2012 BETA testing
« Last post by tomos on November 03, 2011, 04:33 AM »
Compared to the original eM Client version 3.0, Softmaker claims over 500 bug fixes and optimizations, and major startup speed improvement, in their version 3.5.

However, I am not (yet) a fan of it.

what's your usual email client Curt ?

edit/ is it too soon to ask why you're not a fan :) ?

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: Hotkey/comand to change grid
« Last post by tomos on November 01, 2011, 01:18 PM »
I only ever use hotkey:
Win+G is the default AFAIK
Right-click the systray icon >Hotkeys >etc.

Win+G will show a grid, you can move on to the next grid(s) by pressing the "n" key

Right-click the Systray icon >Options >Show numbers on grid
if that's selected the relevant numbers will select the relevant grids

Hope that makes sense.

PS there is a help text file
from the help file
 4 - Keyboard Hotkeys

The following hotkeys can be configured through the tray menu ->
hotkeys.

  4.1 - The command mode
By pressing WIN+G (g for Grid/GridMove), you'll make GridMove go into
Command mode. The grid will come up, and you'll have a small box in
the middle of the screen. GridMove will now wait for you to press
something. If you press esc, it'll quit Command mode.
Command mode is very useful for moving a window somewhere real fast,
or for cicling grids using the keyboard.
If you press a number, the window will be moved to the corresponding
grid part.
If you press N GridMove will switch to the next grid on its list.
If you press M, the window's maximize state will be toggled.
If you press 0, the window will be minimized.
If you press R, the script will be reloaded.

  4.2 - FastMove
FastMove is a faster alternative to Command mode.
  /*incomplete*/

I dont know what "FastMove" is...

The license might be a factor....

Q: Can I purchase a license to run the Belarc Advisor on my corporate network, or my customer's network?

A: We do not permit use of the Belarc Advisor for commercial purposes, however we suggest that you take a look at these products, which we do license for commercial use:

$149.95 Lifetime Upgrades, Today approx $100 via Bits du Jour

I thought that was fairly expensive:
rounding it up, it's actually "only" $50 & $25 respectively

AFAIK the "final" SoftMaker 2012 will be launched before the email client is ready.

shame, looking forward to seeing what they come up with

I only mess with the registry very occasionally, but will try this next time round, thanks!

.. hit the wrong button, or Modification link is broken. Most likely the former ;)

the modification button seems to be sometimes broken (only on first post of thread i think). Dont think it's been officially reported but I've seen it happen a few times now in the last weeks (duplicate post created when modified).

If you can manage it, having two internal drives is great - it gives you a lot more freedom and security.

My partitions are:

[drive #1]
  • OS
  • Backup: from second drive (I also do external backup)

[drive #2]
  • Temp folder / Page file
  • Files: Big Partition w. my files
  • Backup: OS-images / downloads folder

so at any (average) moment and time, only one partition on each drive is in use (normally OS, & Files)

this arrived in the post yesterday - not sure was the five week delay due to the First Class International Parcel Rate or due to customs having to read the label & giving it a seal.

[...] build 39 (the one "boxed") seems to work worse that build 19 which has been perfect on all my systems.

MerleOne, if you see this, could you elaborate on the "work worse" comment ?
(I dont see any download options on their site, you have to email them to get the trial, so getting an older version doesnt seem to be an (easy) option)

Living Room / Re: Smart Response Technology and partitioning
« Last post by tomos on October 19, 2011, 05:10 AM »
Read a little about it in wikipedia -
http://en.wikipedia...._Response_Technology

says it's only available in Raid mode
It is available only when the (integrated) disk controller is configured in RAID mode (but not AHCI or IDE modes)

dont know hardly anything about raid - does that have an influence?

The biggest advantage of partitioning is for backup, in particular imaging of the OS. I guess these days though that can be done excluding data files. Or just lump the lot together and do a monster image on a 3TB backup drive :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Softmaker Office 2010 discount
« Last post by tomos on October 15, 2011, 03:20 PM »
IIRC the best Softmaker offers that I've gotten (for current versions of Softmaker office), were upgrade offers from Ashampoo (Softmaker know when you buy from Ashampoo):
20-something euros, but worth it I thought.
(I dont use any Ashampoo software any more, not on principle or anything - it just kind of happened that way. Guess I dont respond well to their approach.)

Softmaker do very cheap academic offers (student/teachers for around 15 euro, you do have to prove your "status").

As said above, there is a difference between the two but I think it's related to scripting which is way above my capabilities anyway.

Edited : actually I think I am rather lost, the first link for the first message was already $9.95 !

that confused me earlier, but it's related to this:

This offer is a "code 3" discount, meaning it does not give the right to upgrade with an otherwise normal discount.

-that was then. Today's offer is a "code 1" -offer, giving you normal rights. Only available today via Giveawayoftheday and >this link<.

i.e. with the cheaper offer you get no upgrade discount (whether it will ever be upgraded seems uncertain to me though...)

I had that problem "recurringly" (?*) a while back (like a year or two ago).

Usually clearing the cache fixed it - I never knew if the problem was with FF or dc...

Apparently they send you a different download than the trial after a purchase ?  And if you have not kept that hand, you have to hassle.

I wrote this but then realised I was writing about Softmaker Office - as opposed to AShampoo (Softmaker) Office:
You get a download link per email, and it stays active - the link from my purchase of April 2010 is still active. (Not sure what happens when the next version comes out.)

With Ashampoo,
i think you can login and download at any time - but someone else will definitely have to confirm that! (and maybe fill out the details)

Shucks, missed it by a day. Today it is $59.99 with the upgrade being $4.99

upgrade from 2008 version? (if so, you can get that for free - it's mentioned in the thread here about Softmaker 2012 beta)
________________________

You do get occasional offers to upgrade to the Softmaker version (which has additional stuff I've never used so cannot comment on). Not sure how the new standard/pro 2012 version will be approached, but presume again there will be occasional offers.
