Living Room / Re: Hidden Netflix Marathon Gems to Watch Online
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 06, 2010, 12:18 AM »
Usually I find it easier to get hooked on shows when I can watch a bunch of episodes in sequence rather than one a week as they come out on first airing.  I'm going through the Heroes series.  Already watched Season 1 and started on Season 2 today.  When I watched a couple of episodes as they originally aired I didn't get the appeal.  Now I can see it's mostly for laughs. In the episode I just watched, Nakamura goes back in time and becomes his own hero that he read about as a child.  That was a cute twist.

Whoa! This is big news! Please report if you have any issues with it.

Unfortunately I won't be able to blog about it.  :)
My Vista64 system has a fake raid controller.  Evidently the Sandboxie driver doesn't like it.  I can't get off the dime.  I posted to Sandboxie forum. I don't know how many models of HP PC went with this AMD fake raid scheme.  If it's not many, then it likely won't be fixed.

Bulk Rename Utility has a regular expression facility but I'm not sure if you can do math on the matches to do the increment/decrement.

Only thing I'd say, if you use a script or batch, is for a decrement run, make sure to sort low to high and start with the lowest number and end with the highest.  The reverse for an increment run. IOW the sequence of processing should avoid overwriting existing files(obvious true, but easy to forget once you start messing with the implementation.)

If the filenames are actual numbers only then it should be pretty easy to get a directory listing and do a sort by various means as AndyM suggested.

it could also be worth looking at the command line options (these could be scripted)

That's what I was thinking.  If you could get it done with a command in each folder, I know Python(and I'm sure other scripting languages) has a path walk() function that visits the subfolders in the path tree and performs a command in each.

...And the most important thing to remember when traveling back in time, is that if you mention any of this stuff to the wrong person in the town square ... you'll most likely be burned at the stake for heresy :)

LOL..  That's what I was going to post, but you beat me to it!  :o)

Heh heh.  Reminds me of that saying "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."  when what it should really be is (I'm working on it and haven't decided on the final version yet) "In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is burned as a witch."  After all, he claims to be able to divine this "vision" stuff that nobody else can sense. A "seer" in the literal sense. In a more humane society they might just lock him away for treatment.  (I can see the braille Rorschach tests now. "Feel this texture and tell me it what feels like to you" and of course there's no correct answer except that the guy stupid enough to fall for that trick is nuts.)

Anyway, brining modern technology back before it's supported is likely not all it's cracked up to be.  For instance I could bring my little FM transistor radio and plenty of batteries, but if it's 1200 AD there's probably nobody broadcasting music.  A jet fighter might get you one take-off and revenge strafing run on an enemy, but as soon as you land there's no support crew with jet fuel, radar, lasers, smart bombs, replacement parts, yadda yadda.

What gets me about the whole concept of time travel in movies or Dr. Who or whatever, is that people think if they go to this particular point in history, and change an item, that this is going to ripple up to the point that the time traveler started from(his "present" and other's "future".)  But if that were so, then everything everyone did would "ripple" so the time traveler would have not much more influence than anyone else with the power to manipulate events.. like kings or stock market moguls or whoever.  Once you go to the "past" it's the "present" and there's really only the "present." If you think about it, if you can travel back and forth, then the stuff has to be all going on at the same time all the time, so it's all really the present anyway.

Either that or I need another injection or Rorschach test.

There are some strange things with FF.  One thing I can't figure out is one version of FF will show those little pop-down descriptions on the TV Guide Listings page, and with others when they open there's no text.  (Either that or there's something strange how it handles the text.  Maybe foreground and background color the same.) I kind of use that as a gauge.  If I'm trying a beta and everything else seems to work, then I'll go to TV Guide site and try those descriptions.

You can see why, as hair-pulling as it can be, some people get tempted to Linux or one of the other free unix clones.  You can even recompile the kernel if you don't like it the way it is.  :)

I think "Undocumented API" is on just about everyone's list of oxymorons.
:) - which is why you can't really call it an API anyway. Just because something is exported from a DLL doesn't make it an API.

I can't but apparently dozens of programming authors can.  See Amazon.
Anyway, it's not as big a deal as it used to be.  Even MS documents most of the stuff in the online pages now.  But in the old days, there wasn't that much stuff on the internet.  You had to wait for some author to step through code and see how the other guy was doing it, or debug it yourself.  Not the way I want to spend Sunday afternoon when they could have just documented it in the first place.. like normal people.

You can try to reason with them, negotiate with them, cajole them, plead with them - or even threaten them. But it always ends up being a complete waste of your time. Jerks are jerks because they like being jerks. And they very rarely change.

The actor Yul Brynner was best known for playing the King in The King and I.  Anyway, one thing I'll never forget is his comment on a talk show.  He was asked if he learned anything useful during his Asian studies.  He replied to the effect, "The best bit of wisdom I learned was... never deal with idiots.  You can only deal with idiots on their level.  And they are much better on their level than you can ever be."

It's one thing if you won't publish the source code to the OS. It's another if you don't even document the function calls!! Sheesh!!!
While I agree that some of the undocumented function calls should have been formalized & documented, I don't necessarily agree that everything should be documented & exposed to the world. Encapsulation and abstraction...

I think "Undocumented API" is on just about everyone's list of oxymorons.

@f0dder I don't think it's anything to launch Congressional Hearings over or anything.  It just smacks of the same annoying attitude like with undocumented APIs.  Like, we put these functions in the OS for programmers to use them, but we won't tell you about them unless you're on the short list.  Kind of like stock market insider trading.  That there were actually reputable books with the title "Undocumented Windows" kind of tells the story.  It's just annoying.  Like for a long time it was sort of a big secret how to program cool shell extensions.  Same thing.

It's one thing if you won't publish the source code to the OS. It's another if you don't even document the function calls!! Sheesh!!!

Thanks MilesAhead. This is small, useful, and simple to use software. Topmost Toggle is a keeper as well.

You're welcome.  I'm glad someone has use for it.  Unlike the usual marketing cliche', this one I really did program just for myself.  Even using ReOpen it was a pain opening the target folder then the source when the target was the same one like 80+% of the time.  :)

Have you tried CCleaner?  I know it can clean out some Windows MRU stuff.  But I'm not sure exactly what.  Also it would be a good idea to post your OS since these settings tend to get shuffled around with each new flavor of Windows.

I'd look at
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/
www.vista64.com
http://www.sevenforums.com/

depending on your OS. There's probably a tutorial how to clear out various OS mru lists and cache. Also I'd be surprised if there wasn't a freebie on SoftPedia.com that would clean up the traces CCleaner misses.  They have a pretty extensive selection of Windows freeware.

Yeah, I wrote my post before seeing new replys to the thread.

Btw, I'm one of those running my firefox profile from a ramdisk - extensions as well as internet cache etc. It does help a fair amount wrt. speed :)

I thought that might be you. :)

I did reread that blog.  If you plow through the thick language what they are really saying is, it was a gimmick for WMP to hog the prefetch.  IOW, if I write an editor and handle file types such as .txt .doc .srt whatever, instead of just putting "%1" as param, if I put a bogus pararm that is different for each file type, chances are I could end up with multiple entries in the prefetch.  People would marvel how fast my editor loads compared to SuperEditWhatever brand.  One more way to give the home team an edge.

I have WMP in my kill list, just because I really don't want it indexing stuff.  Now everyone will look through their file type associations to see which apps are trying to hog the prefetch using the same trick. Another popular one is the "helper" or "agent" that sits in the tray. Just in case you may run that app someday.

btw the other issue could be disk maintenance.  Are you a stickler for keeping your HD defragged?  No matter what you do if the HD is scrambled then the first load off the disk is bound to be slow.  The 2nd time around then the file system has cached much of it, be it in the prefetch or no prefetch.

I don't know why you are going into the registry.  The fsutil memoryusage tweak I suggested just allocates more memory for NTFS file system buffers.  What it will do for you there's no guarantee.

By the way, Miles, I didn't know you were a programmer.  Where can i find your software?  Thanks.

Thanks for asking. :)

http://www.favessoft.com/

Mostly I recommend the stuff on the hotkeys page.  To be honest, some of the initial Explorer utilities were poorly designed.  I learned from my mistakes and went with a pop up on top type hotkey window instead of an open all the time utility.

I left most of the initial programs up because it doesn't cost me anything and there may be a few people who prefer that style.

The frustrating thing is most discussion boards won't even let you put your url in your signature or even your profile as your home page, if you are trying to sell anything on the site.  I'm not talking about spamming.  It's annoying people posting just so they can say "btw, my software .. yadda yadda.." I mean just having the url anywhere.  It's like you are Beelzebub if you try to get a dime for your effort.

Anyway, afa the topic goes, I've used various versions of TeraCopy and have several times considered buying it... but I sort of kept waiting for different issues in the betas to be resolved.  Then when I got a PC with Vista64 SP1 I found the shell copy works fine and I don't really have a need for it. I put W7 on the offending machine that had pre SP1 Vista.  So it's not something that would have a lot of benefit for me.  I don't even bother with KillCopy now.

@superboyac I have to agree with your last comments on the freeware/payware thing. If you do try to sell your software, the distributors try to suck all the profit out of the venture.  As in most businesses I guess.  I've submitted programs that are on lots of download sites, to particular download sites, that still haven't showed after years because I didn't pay the $250 vig.

It's just barriers to the individual trying to sell anything.  Like needing a $500 license to sell $.05 Kool-aid on the corner.  Forget it!! Got to have a big trust fund or a corporate pal.  How else can you absorb these costs?  Not on donations man.

That's why I chucked it and changed all my stuff to fully functional donation-ware.  At least a few people will use some of my utilities that way.

Still hanging in with XP Home.

I know it takes time on initial start up but generally speaking, i do find it speedier afterward.

If you're not going to go with a ramdisk or running it off some solid state or USB drive then the trick would be to have a program run it, then kill it.  That way it's in the file system cache.  Also you can play around with fsutil settings for NTFS file system.  See this geek tip.  I have mine set to 2 on all my OS.

http://www.howtogeek...cache-size-in-vista/

The tweak should also work on XP. It's an NTFS thing rather than an OS thing.
