Cool, good to hear first-hand experience! My only worry with it is I'll have to get into all kinds of extreme sports to really fit in with the user base. ;)

you'll have to get yourself a flying suit Oshyan :)

I could sort of understand it if their "burocraticness" was burocratic - I mean when they clamp down on someone, they rarely seem to make much sense...

@mahesh yeah, I think that's right
the credit/payment-in was in US$ and I thought I could spend that anywhere. Just that I didnt know what was going on. (Still not 100% sure - a lot of places you have to actually click the purchase button before being sent to paypal.)

EU?
It could be that if I purchase from local or EU sites - they only use my bank/cc - as eleman says above (post #2)

Then if I purchase outside the EU, paypal is allowed to use the credit.

Will have a look at treating myself to some non-EU software and see how I get on.
I think paypal is being used less and less by sellers, and lately I've seen german sites charging a surcharge if you use it - I can see why because of their charges.

Paypal AFAIK always will try to use your Balance before charging you, however each currency has its own balance, so if you have $50 in your account but you pay in euro's it will charge your credit card. That's how I understand it anyway.

that must be what it is:
  • The credit is in US$
  • the purchase that did *not* use my credit was in GBP
  • Now it looks (as you say) like the dc donation (US$) *will* use the credit (US$)

Re donating to dc with paypal -
I'm still not sure do I get presented with "choose payment method" after clicking the [Pay Now] button...

^ thanks eleman
that explains it

Probably handy enough for paypal too - they presumably take yet another cut when transferring it to your bank.
They really must be making a fortune.

A payment was made to my paypal account recently (i.e. it's in credit). I made a purchase, expecting the credit to be used - but it wasnt. When making the payment I was just given my usual payment options (direct from bank account / cc).

I use my Paypal ac very little and only once before had it in credit - that time it was used up immediately on my next purchase.

Now I wanted to make a donation here, I'm directed to my paypal account, I login and this is what I'm presented with -

Screenshot - 2011-12-06 , 12_56_55.png

i.e. I dont even get the usual payment-method choices. Only relevant link is [Pay Now] - so I dont know from where the payment will be taken...

Anyone know what the story is? I'm in Germany, dont know if that makes a difference to the paypal "structure"

but for home users happy with existing e-mail clients, an update of the Standard edition is a more interesting event.

true, but who out there is really happy with their email client :( (or is that just me...)
I'm using Tbird, mostly unhappy with the UI. The problem is, I suspect I'd have the same (but different) problem no matter what email client I used...

the Firefox folks invented a Damn Cool Thing (TM): the "Don't load tabs until selected" option (http://support.mozil...kb/Session%20Restore):

I've been doing that for a while via about:config - I didnt realise that they had made it easier, thanks!

Hi anandcoral, have never used this type of app but always wanted to

Which file should we download?
(current link leads to a download page with choices)
OK found it
https://sites.google...kanote/home/download

the link in OP (https://sites.google...stickanote/download/) is missing the home bit.

1] In what way does it associate with a file - when the file is selected in Explorer, or when the file is launched?
EDIT/ Sorry, didnt read closely enough :)

2] changing hotkey to Win+Y doesnt work here (German keyboard)

"How do I allow remote connections on the computer I want to connect to?"
You can't use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a computer using Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, or Windows 7 Home Premium.

Looking through the thread again for comments about the email client - trying to decide if Pro worth the extra dosh (would be helpful to know what exactly the introductory standard upgrade offer will be):

Just finished putting the latest beta through its paces and I'm very impressed.

The new email client is quite nice. Lightning fast. Packs much of the look and feel of Outlook without all the MS Exchange baggage that comes along for the ride. [...]

FWIW TeamViewer allows the remote desktop to interact with UAC without issue.

and free for personal use - that fits the bill - rereading the thread it gets the most votes, also available in German
Thanks for reminding me of it Carol

I suspect there probably is an app that does this -
I am NOT recommending this one which I installed last year - especially seeing as I cant figure out how to use it now.
https://www.facebook...ender.safego?sk=info

EDIT/ it's actually a sort of FB anti-virus, but if I remember right, it went through my security settings with me when I installed it.

One would also have to be careful with the settings of the security app (I just removed a few rights for that app)

He had clicked on a link in some spam email and it hijacked his laptop

I found that most highly regarded AV programs let stuff through from time to time.

similar experience here last year with a link (from a google search) and with a very reputable AV. Maybe I should look into Malwarebytes - I presume from what you say Iain that they work well together? (MSE & MWB)

The invited professor could have been mature enough and gracious enough to overlook the mistake, or even chosen to correct the congressman a bit more tactfully.  The congressman should have enough dignity not to have become offended even if corrected in a non-tactful way.

I presume what really pissed the professor off was that this guy wasnt even there for his testimony, yet here he was slating it goodo. (There's another video there where he discusses it http://www.youtube.c...&feature=related)

Probably not a shock ... But Remote Desktop (or assistance) works perfectly with the UAC prompts.
next on the list then :)

can continue using join.me when wanting to share the desktop
