Hmmmm, evidently they broke it and don't intend to fix it. If you launch a 32 bit explorer all you get is, it invokes a 64 bit explorer, then quits.  32 bit shell extensions are hosed.

btw it has been brought to my attention that there may have been some change to Windows Seven 64 bit post-beta that prevents this work-around from functioning.

I've uploaded a minor update.  Until I can test it one way or the other with W7 64 bit retail I'm labeling it as a Vista-only utility.

If anyone has W7 retail 64 bit and would like to try it out I'd be curious.  I don't understand why they would change this since it's their own work-around but oh well.

Here's the link to the updated zip file if anyone is curious to try it:

http://www.favessoft.com/HalfShell.zip

I'm not exactly sure what the issue is.  The only information I have is that it "does nothing" when you hit the hotkey.  I don't know if the 64 bit Windows in question even has the file
%windir%\SysWow64\explorer.exe

Stranger all the time. I found one reference to it on the web:

http://social.answer...38-b64e-bc5e13fac852

as you can see the only information is "does not seem to work anymore" so I don't know what to do with that.

Yup. Fair comment, but I'm stuck in my ways! I just can't be bothered to learn how to do it all in FF, not that it would be so difficult... Sigh, colour me LAZY!

I did MaxThon for awhile and recommend it to those who use IE and want customization.  What scared me off though is the BHO possibility. I got burned once by an IE BHO and I don't like having that hook hanging there.  When I can uninstall IE then I do.  If I can't, I take other measures to auto kill it if it rears its ugly head.

For those that like IE though, there are a ton of cool plug-ins, addons, whatever you want to call them, for MaxThon.

we're just now getting a lot more one-line off-the-cuff throwaway comments, and less thoughtful considered commentary.

I don't even have a Messenger type application installed for that reason.  I don't see the attraction of trying to type in some comment before what you are alluding to scrolls off.  It's like, everyone talk, nobody listen.

What we need are random semi-intelligent comment generators. Comments are appended after a quasi-random delay to make you think somebody is reading the stuff.

Kind of reminds me of those parties where everyone is totally hammered.  Each person in turn makes a comment only funny to them, that they laugh at, then on to the next person.  But they are all too smashed to realize nobody is absorbing the humor.

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if there's a FF AddOn that searches the descriptions for when you forget the name of the site?  Like if you typed in Programming it would pop up all your bookmarks with the word or substring in the description.

edit:

For example, for some reason I keep forgetting the name Robert Vesco.  But if I could search on keywords "financier thief" it should pop up the bookmark.

I searched the word Description on FF AddOn bookmarks section and didn't come up with that AddOn.

btw for those who like to wait for official stable releases, Sandboxie 3.44 is out.  One installer does both 32 and 64 bit.  I've put it on both my PCs(W7 32 bit and Vista64) and it seems fine.

Hi,

Could you clarity what you mean by "CrystalMark likes it" : you perform a before defrag /after defrag comparison and check for differences in the benchmark result ?  Or is it something else ?  Thanks.

Sequential read and write show noticeable improvement after running a defrag with all the optimizations enabled.  Whereas a defrag with Auslogics will smooth out the disk access, but show no increase in throughput(unless the drive has been neglected.. I usually do at least a quick defrag several times a week if not every day.)

It's more pronounced on my 500 GB drive, perhaps because it's a few years older and only has 16 MB cache.

edit: the Puran with all optimizations seems to be comparable to MyDefrag Daily Optimize but perhaps a bit more thorough.  The OSD is an order of magnitude better though.  I got rid of the other defraggers since it looks like this will be the only one I need now.

Ok, I see what happened.  The download buttons are way over on the right.. scrolled off my browser window.  Sometimes with NoScript you click on a link and it acts flat.  I thought that was the trouble. In any case I completed a non-boot defrag with all the available optimizations.  Feels a bit like MyDefrag Daily Optimize but with a much nicer OSD.  Looks like a keeper. I have to try out the Idle Processing scheme.

edit: btw Crystal Disk Mark likes it.  I got about the same scores as MyDefrag Daily Optimize. Perhaps just a tad better.

Is my computer busted or are there no clickable links on the download page?  Every download button brings me to that page, but there's no link to download.

edit: I can get it from Softpedia, but it just seems weird.

edit2: trying first run now.  Looks interesting.  I'll have to check out the Automatic modes later.

USB port on my WD HDTV player is the same as well as 2 different PCs.  Sounds like the common denominator is the USB stick.  I just don't want to mess with moving parts.  I've only purchased a few of these things but so far my ideal would be A-Data rubberized but slim and with fast write speed.  My first was a Sandisk which I bought because I read all these reviews about how bullet proof the thing was.  I think I used it a dozen times before it died.  Same thing, slide inside a body.  Moving parts.  No go no mo' for me dude.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: TeraCopy Pro only $11 (50% off at BDJ)
« Last post by MilesAhead on February 01, 2010, 05:42 PM »
btw since I mentioned KillCopy, I found the fix for the Start Menu shortcuts for "network" and "normal" configuration, for 64 bit Windows.  If you substitute SysWow64 for System32 in the shortcuts, they will work.

One nice way to use KillCopy is in throttled mode.  Say you want to copy a large file over the Lan in the background without hobbling your PC.  It has a slider for % of bandwidth etc..   While the copy is going on, if you want to revert to 100% or make other adjustments, there's a Settings Button on the copy window.  The Settings has 3 ways to close.. Cancel, Ok, and Save as default.. this makes it convenient to speed up a copy to get it done without changing your default throttle setting.  I use KillCopy for throttled copy and TeraCopy or Explorer drag & drop for full speed.

Many of the skins have non-English text but the Standard skin that's always available is in English.  There are several others that can be downloaded from the site with English text.

Why embedding them when I can choose them from a side bar, a tool bar or a menu anyway?

When you wrote "a list of bookmarks (built-in)" I thought you meant some tweak to have a blank page with a bunch of links or something. As I said, I just use about:blank myself.  It does get a bit hairy though. I'm glad FF does search of bookmarks when typing in the address bar... but I think it's getting to the point where I need some AI thing that knows what I'm looking for when I can't remember the name of the stupid bookmark or which folder it's stuck in.  I have the bookmarks toolbar as all categorized folders but sometimes it's a toss up which folder I would put something in if it sort of spans categories.. esp. if I haven't used that bookmark for awhile.

What's wrong with about:blank and a list of bookmarks (built-in)?

I always use about:blank but how do you embed the bookmarks?

General Software Discussion / Nice write-up for my HalfShell
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 28, 2010, 01:05 PM »
I got a nice write-up for my HalfShell ahk hack.  It's just a hotkey handler for Shift-Enter on 64 bit Vista and Windows Seven that opens selected folders in the 32 bit shell allowing some 32 bit shell extensions to work.

I recently updated it to empty its working set after each use to reduce the memory usage just sitting in the task tray.  I also added a test that the selection is a folder before opening. Latest version is 1.7.1.0 and can be downloaded from my site using this link(scroll about half way down the page and you'll find HalfShell.)

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

The download on my site has the latest version.  Softpedia will likely update overnight.

edit: this is interesting.  All of a sudden google pops this up everywhere.  It's on boards saying it's "time limited shareware price $0" other boards saying it's Removed(as close as I can figure they were pissed because a hotkey tray app has no screen shot when I never submitted my program to them in the first place.)  Man the web is wild!!!

Wow! Thanks for posting this, MerleOne  I've already purchased a license for my own machine, but this will let me upgrade my secondary notebook (regular version is fine for my wife).

WinPatrol is "must have" software, it's one of the first things that I install on any computer I am setting up. I hope this experiement "works" for Bill - his support, his software, and his blog are awesome.

I think the WinPatrol license is one of those "all the computers you own" types.  On the site it says:
Single License valid on all your personal desktops and laptops!

Don't know if spouse counts or not, but for 99 cents it's academic.
