@fenixproductions: Thanks, yes, apostrophe, comma and perhaps quite a lot more from the full/extended ASCII character set!
Actually, I recall seeing a list of the DOS/Windows valid filename characters, in a 4DOS manual, but I don't recall what they all were.

"He had to learn, not to throw stones at the school ..."?
What's that all about? (Just curious.)

@MerleOne: Interesting post. I had not come across History Explorer before, so I went to the site and took a look around. It looks like a rather nifty document version backup/restore software.
I would suggest that the reason you have not had a response to your report of this "nasty & well hidden bug" is possibly because the software developers might not regard it as a bug at all. I recall that the DOS/Windows operating system did not used to accept as valid any characters that were (from memory) NOT in the ranges:
  • Numeric: 0-9
  • Alphabetic: A-Z
  • Special characters: ().SPACE
(I'm sure someone in the DC forum reading this would be able to specify exactly what the filename validation criteria were and currently are.)

The OS is a bit more tolerant now, but even so a lot of software continues with the historic standard for filename validation criteria.

Not surprising therefore that filenames with things like double quotes (")and hash marks (#) still throw some of these applications into a fit.
I have tripped over this problem so many times over the years that my approach now is that it's better to err on the side of caution and avoid using anything but the LCM (Lowest Common Denominator) - i.e., the base filename standard.

@tn_dang: Not sure whether this might be of use/help:

Text Mining Tool
Text Mining Tool is a freeware program for extraction of text from files of the types: PDF, DOC, RTF, CHM, HTML
It apparently works as converter of PDF, DOC, RTF, CHM, HTML files to text.

    @tn_dang:
When Microsoft released their Office Open XML, I believe their MS Office Word documents then conformed to that standard - i.e., including files with extension .docx

I have noticed that Google docs can import files with extension .docx, and seems to be able to turn them into Google doc format without any apparent loss of formatting - I think they become something rather like a .RTF (Rich Text Format) document - though this (no loss of formatting) does not seem to be always the case when converting files with the extension .doc
As an aside, I am unsure (have not tested) whether this conversion (.docx ---> Google docs format) works perfectly without loss of formatting 100% of the time, but I have noticed it seems to work on those few occasions when I have done this to files with .docx extension  - i.e., when I have wanted to share files with people whose software could not read files with .docx extensions.

With the latest changes to Google docs functionality, I think you now have the option to either:
    (a) import .docx files to Google docs, and convert them to Google docs format as they are being imported, or
    (b) import .docx files to Google docs, and convert them to Google docs format after they have been imported.
Furthermore, I gather that you can do this conversion with single documents, or with batches of documents.

Once a file has been converted to Google docs format:
    (a) The storage space it takes up does not decrement your total available/residual Google docs storage space.
    (b) The file can be Exported in these formats:
    • HTML
    • Open Document
    • PDF
    • RTF
    • Plain Text <----------THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED
    • Microsoft Word

The criteria you state include "can be invoked at the command line", and this approach I have described does not meet that criterion.
Anyway, I would suggest that you try it and see for yourself, if you are interested.
Hope this helps or is of use.[/list] (Why is this editor tacking "list" onto my post?)

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR Plugin: TimeZone [Update version 1.4.1]
    « Last post by IainB on July 30, 2010, 01:59 AM »
@Perry Mowbray: No, it just doesn't work, whatever I do.

I just re-enabled Timezone and ran DCupdater to update from v1.4.0 to v1.4.1.
Restarted FARR. FARR crashed as usual.
    Removed Timezone from plugins.
    Restarted FARR.
    No crash.

So I reinstalled Timezone using v1.4.1 .ZIP from ScribbledBits.
FARR shut down by itself (?) and did not restart.
    I restarted FARR.
Error message that it had disabled Timezone.
    I stopped FARR.
Restarted FARR. FARR crashed as usual.

    Removed Timezone from plugins.
    Restarted FARR.
FARR runs fine - No crash.

    @Perry Mowbray:
No the situation is as per my comment above, viz:
    @Perry Mowbray:
My last post on the details of the crashes with FARR (caused by TimeZone and separately by two other plugins) is here: Re: Latest FARR Release v2.87.03 - May 4, 2010

I am sorry, I should have posted the details to this discussion thread at the time.

That is, if TimeZone is included in the plugins, it causes FARR to crash on startup, and this has been the case since at least May 4th 2010.
I have thus removed TimeZone from my plugins.

General Software Discussion / Re: monitor network usage?
    « Last post by IainB on July 19, 2010, 07:36 AM »
    +1 for Networx.
This post is elsewhere in DC Forum:
Thought this feedback might come in useful.
I have been using NetWorx for about a year now. Originally, my laptop had been the sole user of the connection (via a WiFi Access Point), but now we have two laptops that share the connection via the same WiFi Access Point.

The other week, we blew our bandwidth cap. This was no surprise, as our ISP had automatically emailed us to warn that we were approaching 80% utilisation of the capped limit. However, I had rather wished that I could use NetWorx to monitor all bandwidth utilisation for that line, but I had assumed that it could not do that except across a LAN.

Today I was playing around with the NetWorx settings on the two PCS we have that use the line, and - somewhat hopefully -  I tried ticking the box in the "Advanced" tab that said "Synchronise usage data with other NetWorx instances on the network".

To my pleasant surprise, both laptops' instances of NetWorx almost immediately picked up each others' data, and on both laptops you could see the bandwidth consumption by user within laptop, or as an aggregate total for all users.

NetWorx is currently up to v5.1.1 as of 2010/04/14. This usage data synchronisation, together with its nifty reports and bar charts, make NetWorx a very good piece of free software.

    @Paul Keith:
Well, yes, their quality might be simply that of a label - but not necessarily exclusively that. They are "categories" - e.g., some of them, like Entry, When, Done, DOB, DOW, DOD, have a data type characteristic (see first screenshot below). Those are date formats, and can be whatever date you want and on which you can set rules for assignment conditions/actions. All other categories similarly can have rules for assignment conditions/actions (see second screenshot below).

I suppose the purpose might best be described as: to provide a logical context, a logical structure, and the logical rules (if necessary) for assigning them to a record.

It was only when you started to get the hang of these categories that you could start to realise the flexibility and power of Lotus Agenda.
    Lotus Agenda Screenshot - 2010-07-09 A.jpg

    @Paul Keith:
    -analysis of goals
This was the parent category that would be assigned by default to any record that related to an analysis of my own life goals, according to the mutually exclusive child sub-categories - which would have records assigned deliberately by me, as the user.

    -superannuation
This was the parent category that would be assigned by default to any record that related to an analysis of the subject of superannuation, according to the mutually exclusive child sub-categories - which would have records assigned deliberately by me, as the user.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure if this helps you. These were logical structures which met my own peculiar needs, not necessarily anyone else's.

    Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: DBISAM Engine Error # 11949
    « Last post by IainB on July 03, 2010, 06:09 AM »
@mouser: Re CHS DBISAM Engine Error # 11949.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have been getting this CHS DBISAM error recurring - I have been hammering CHS a bit lately.
The symptoms seem to be precisely the same as DBISAM errors I have experienced before. The occurrence, whilst initially relatively infrequent, has become more (and annoyingly) frequent.
I have seen no text errors occurring in the database records.

This is a copy of the text in the error window:
    ---------------------------
    Error..
    ---------------------------
DBISAM Engine Error # 11949 SQL parsing error - Expected column name but instead found tomato in SELECT SQL statement at line 1, column 62
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

Is there anything you would like to know about them when they occur?

What would you recommend I do? I have not repaired the database. I just stop and restart CHS when it occurs.

Update 2010-07-08: I have tried the Repair, and the "restore clipboard chain", but neither seems to prevent a recurrence of the error.
    6372
    @Paul Keith:
    • Could you give at least some hint on the context of the blurred category?: It was a person's name.
    • What is DOB, DOW and DOD?: Date of Birth/Wedding/Death, respectively.
    • Do you have an image for ones that is less contact based? Yes. The category tree was several hundred category lines long, with many parent/child nested categories. I shall put up some more screenshots later when I have the time.
    • Have you looked into this application? No. But I just did. Looks like an interesting system.

Update 2010-07-06: @Paul Keith: Here you go - two more screenshots of my Lotus Agenda category tree.
    Lotus Agenda Screenshot - 2010-07-06 A.jpg
    Lotus Agenda Screenshot - 2010-07-06 B.jpg

Update 2010-07-08: @Paul Keith: The lines between items in the category tree represent mutually exclusive relationships. No lines = NOT mutually exclusive. The musical notes: the solo one means there is a note is attached to that category item, stored in the database. The twin one means that a note is attached to that category item, but it is in a separate .txt file.
    6373
@Paul Keith: If it helps, then here's a screenshot of part of my old Lotus Agenda category tree.
They are a bit like nested labels in Gmail, except that the latter seem rather limited by comparison.
    Agenda Screenshot 001.png
    6374
@Paul Keith: Sorry for very belated response. I think I had notifications turned off.
Could you provide some examples as to what specific labels and character string you had that gave the feature a much needed place in your priority system?

Descriptions like these often make sense until I try imagining what specific string I would use.
Well, the example would be anything you could imagine, I suppose.
For example, suppose that you had (say) 500,000 records (notes) in your database, and wanted to be able to flag any notes that contained any reference to "caffeine".

You set up a sub-category in the hierarchical category tree under "Hot drinks", and set the rule that any future occurrence of "caffeine" in any new note will be auto-assigned to this category.
Then you realise that you might want to do this for all 500,000 records in your database, so as not to miss any references to "caffeine", so you set a rule that this category association is to retrospectively run once.
Then someone asks how many such references have we had in notes created after 2010-05-02, so you set a conditional "date >2010-05-02" category, and retrospectively run it once, and add the rule that this category is to be auto-assigned in any new notes.

You then do the same for "Milo" and "Hot Chocolate".
And you can individually view the filters for "Caffeine", "Milo" and "Hot Chocolate" after 2010-05-02.

Then you might want to see how this is consistent with the parent "Hot drinks", so you view that list of filtered records, and it shows all records created since 2010-05-02 which are assigned to "Caffeine" and "Milo" and "Hot Chocolate".

As well as doing this, you might want to now set an action priority, so you set up a parent group called "Priority", with subgroups A, B, and C. You then go down the list of records assigned to "hot drinks" and flag them as A, or B, or C. Then you notice that one of the C flagged items should actually be a B, so you change it. That record pops OUT of the view of the C items, and INTO the B list.

By the way, I spoke to soon about GTD for Gmail. It's all good. The improvements have not reduced the functionality. All you have to do is set up what you want via the GTD Preferences section.
