There's also the discontinued (?) freeware app MobyDock:http://www.mobydock.com/

I'm a dunderhead: how in the H-E- double hockey sticks does on change the display name of a hyperlink? i.e. make "MobyDock" above a link to its website?

Perry managed to say in four sentences what I failed to say in 5 paragraphs. As I said, it seemed a straight forward question until I started trying to answer it...

I started reading this thread with very clear views on the topic but realised after reading Zaine's first post that we have a huge problem here: how does one define cybersex? I can't have an opinion if I don't know WTF we're talking about!

Answers.com defines it this way: "Sexual activity or arousal through communication by computer."

Now, what we need to add to this, IMHO, is a distinction between looking at pictures and streaming video - which have taken the place of our fathers' print and 8mm collections - and interacting with other people for arousal. Crap, I've just realised that there is the whole world of webcam voyeurism (for me uncharted territory) needs to considered, too.

I guess for me it comes down to this: if there is an emotional connection made with another living organism then I think that cybersex strays dangerously close to what I would consider cheating.

As Deozaan and Josh point out, though, whether we consider cybersex cheating or not is only one of a host of issues relating to erotica, relationships, and personal well-being. It's really a far, far more complex issue than merely giving a yes or no answer to "is cybersex cheating?".

I'll cast my lot in with Carol, fodder and cranioscopical. I'd like to think that you could pull this off and as a result offer an even more extensive set of discounts on some really amazing software but I really do feel that this would compromise dc's right to claim that its reviews are truly unbiased.

General Review Discussion / Re: Mini review: toDoList

Love the quote from "wakeywakey" at the end of the review. The review itself was very interesting as well and I'll be giving To Do List a try.

Thanks very much.

I'm with nudone on this one. I WANT to get better, really I do, but I can barely get organized to find a spot on my desk for a cup of coffee at the moment... I've actually got everything on the list, so the only thing I need to do is clean up my workspace  8)

Hmmm... Interesting - thanks for the link to Registry Workshop, Kimmchii. It's certainly much more attractive from a pricing standpoint! I'm downloading it as I write this and am going to run it along with Registrar Registry Manger and see how they compare.

I'm off to eat my nang-myun right now... It's 6:30 in the evening and 39 degrees and I need something to cool me off!
6335
I've written to the author of Registrar Registry Manager requesting clarification about his licensing policy (on one page it says "updates for life" on another it says minor upgrades are free) and to ask about either academic licensing or a donationcoder offer. I've yet to hear back but I've got my fingers crossed. Like Josh I can't justify $60+ at the moment... I'll keep you posted.

General Software Discussion / Re: Will you upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007?
« Last post by Darwin on July 21, 2006, 12:30 AM »
I'm really pleased that MS is finally going to allow customers to purchase a key. I know it's a small point, but it has always annoyed the H*E*double hockey sticks out of me that one has to uninstall a trial, go to a store in person or on-line and purchase a boxed version of the same software, install it and activate it. It *looks* like I'll be able to order a key over the 'phone and probably on-line for instant delivery. That, added to Zaine's point about the price likely dropping (though as I need Access the price is unlikely to be that low for me), is "Sweet".
6337
Hmmm.... I'm running SpySweeper right now and it's only using 15MB in the system tray (i.e. it's monitoring but not sweeping). A full sweep bumps that to 18MB and 1-3% CPU (I've just confirmed this on a first generation Centrino notebook  with 1024MB RAM).

Part of the large download size for X1 is the set of Stellent filters that are included with it. These allow you to view the contents and formatting of files without opening their associated apps (or even having those apps installed). On my installation, the filters folder occupies 17.7 MB while the Yahoo Toolbar (which I chose NOT to install) folder occupies 1.09 MB.

I agree with Carol, though, that it is really annoying having to use Custom install to avoid having your homepage set to Yahoo, Yahoo set as your default search engine and to avoid having the Toolbar installed. I NEVER use the default installer for any software anymore because 9 times out of 10 they will try to do this with either Yahoo or Google...

I uninstalled YDS and installed X1 right after making the last post. Like Carol, I'm impressed. It's more feature rich than YDS and every bit as quick. Actually, it *feels* quicker. After a limited amount of time with it, it *seems* more stable, too. Time will tell though...

Hmm... found a semi-satisfying answer to my question about the difference between YDS and X1 here http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/06/x1-desktop-search-is-now-free-as-in.html.

Essentially:

Joe Longtin who is Product Marketing Manager at X1 Technologies explains the difference between Yahoo Desktop Search and X1 Enterprise Client:

Yahoo! Desktop Search includes support for the Yahoo! Address book and their instant messenger. It’s excellent for personal use on one’s desktop and it will continue to appeal to the consumer of Yahoo! Services, at home or at work.

X1 Enterprise Client is intended for intensive business use in a dynamic environment, therefore it's highly configurable, extensible and - as one component of the X1 Enterprise Platform - scalable.

* Real-time indexing. Changes to files and deleted files are updated in the index automatically.

* Support for Outlook Calendar and Task items. Users can search against virtually anything in Outlook.

* Range searching means users just have to know a specific date/numeric range, not an exact date.

* Drag and drop search results into emails or onto your desktop.

* Support for Lotus Notes 7.0.

* The X1 Enterprise Client federates search results from both the desktop and the X1 Enterprise Server.

* Unicode support. Search multiple languages.

* Ability to search network folders and enterprise content repositories. Using the free Enterprise Deployment Kit, IT administrators retain central control and can "switch on" end user access to network locations. X1 maps to Windows ACLs.

* Group Policy support.

The Enterprise Client really appeals to IT professionals who are under pressure to make their "customers" more productive without compromising information security.

Given that I don't care about Yahoo Messenger and Address book indexing AND X1 offers real-time indexing and apparently greater security this is starting to look like a no brainer.

That does clear things up a bit. A couple of suggestions are TrueLaunchBar http://www.truelaunchbar.com/ and ObjectDock http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/. I suspect that you will have tried both, but you never know...

Both come in freeware and shareware versions. I've purchased licenses for both but only have TrueLaunchBar installed.

TrueLaunchBar allows you to easily set up folders in your quicklaunch area just as you've described having done in WinME. ObjectDock (and the freeware apps below) lets  you create floating or docked program (or file) launchers and is visually like the Dock in OS-X but is much more configurable. The shareware version (ObjectDock Plus) allows you to set up tabbed docks, which are very convenient for organising your shortcuts. It does all this with a surprisingly small footprint (at or just under 1 meg RAM in my usage). TrueLaunchBar has no footprint at all that I can detect.

Other freeware apps similar to ObjectDock are:

DockEx http://www.dockex.com/
MobyDock http://www.dockex.com/
RocketDock http://www.punksoftware.com/rocketdock

Of these the most similar to ObjectDock Plus is DockEx, which offers the same premium feature of running tabbed docks. CAVEAT: I haven't tried it!

Well, that didn't pan out... Installation of X1, as I feared, requires that one first uninstall YDS, which is recognised as a "different version of X1". Thus, I'll be holding off until there is more concrete information about the differences between the two versions, if any.

Ironically, I only re-installed YDS yesterday morning after having uninstalled it about five months ago.

Thanks Carol! I'm off to install, provided that doing so doesn't look like it's going to completely jigger my current YDS installation...

I wonder what differs between X1 Enterprise Client Free Edition and Yahoo Desktop Search? At any rate, regarding jdd's note above, this pdf *might* be informative:

http://www.x1.com/do...nterprise_client.pdf

Note that it indicates features that are not available in the free version.

Curiously, neither the YDS nor the X1 site mentions the differences between these two free versions. X1 touts real time Outlook indexing, which does not appear from using YDS to be a common feature.

I guess I'll just have to install X1.

If you want to give RegEx a go, personally I would trust them on the 3 month offer - but as you say it is a bit odd they don't offer a time limted trial.

I did just that and had no trouble getting a refund whatsoever, though they did write back asking to clarify why I wanted a refund.

Thanks for your comments, Carol and Oshyan. I'm sure you're both right and OS X will remain a closed access OS (i.e. the price of admission is buying Apple branded hardware). C'est la vie... I've an iBook running OS X and three notebooks running XP Home, XP Pro and Win2k respectively and I have to agree with Oshyan: it's pretty amazing that Windows is as stable as it is. I also must confess to not having yet been won over by OS X. I guess I am too rooted in the Windows camp, which is funny as I started out on Macs and *hated* Windows when it first appeared. That changed for me with 3.11 for WorkGroups - I couldn't believe how much I could configure it and add to it! Anyway, I see strengths and weaknesses in both approaches.
