What about VIM? If you like FARR, try VIM.

Hi Langston, welcome aboard!

I have to admin, every time I see your name I instantly think of the Langston field... and that makes me realize what a big reread stack I have... it's as big as my still-to-read pile... <sigh>

Has either person looked at these? It's a 2009 post but might still have some valid links.

Interesting, the page lists six programs and at the bottom says "I hope I’ve managed to cover most of the tools available for OS X". That said, the comments mention a few more possibilities.

Another possibility is to use a desktop search engine like the freeware Agent Ransack

+1 for Agent Ransack.

General Software Discussion / Re: FileNanny
« Last post by x16wda on July 18, 2013, 05:21 AM »
The one I had set in the Context Menu and simply asked "File Nanny this". At which time, it created a folder, placed the target file in it, then left it in the originating folder.

That's similar to FileMenuTools' "Pack to Folder".  Select one or more files and choose Pack to Folder from the FileMenuTools menu, and it will ask you for a name for the folder, create it in the same folder as the files, then move those files into it.  (Would be nice if it could figure out a logical name for you automatically, especially if it's just one file.)

Instead, you download something called SourceForge Installer which bundles the software with third party offers used for monetization.

Would that be OpenSourceCandy?

I've been using 1&1 for my domains without an issue for several years.  Added some, changed some packages, cancelled some, no problem (once you find the right place to cancel).  Registered domains for my son and daughter for Christmas last year with them too.

That would be "Original Poster"...

As far as gadgets go, you can do a lot worse than a "weather station".

How good is the range on the remote sensor?  That's been a weak spot on the units I have tried.  (Longevity is another weak spot, probably because I have always gone with the cheaper units.)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 8's Task Manager -- Slow as Hell.
« Last post by x16wda on July 14, 2013, 02:31 PM »
You're right, it seems very slow loading the first time.  But bring it up again and it's faster the second and subsequent times.

That said I usually use System Explorer instead, and leave it running.  It has most everything I need and some of the features are handy (like the running history of processes, connections and events).  If I need anything else I can fire up Process Explorer.  I don't replace the default Task Manager with either, as they are both simple to get at when I need them.

Anyone else see the Bing desktop today with the alpacas?  The five of them look very individual.  But did anyone else notice the moustache on the middle one?  Is that for real??

For the O stuff... It all depends.

Yeah, exactly - assuming there are no other applicable constraints, if there's nothing better for those millions of cycles to do then what the heck... it's like nanoaerobic exercise...

Interesting, isn't it?  I also gained 40lbs in a couple months after quitting smoking.  Wasn't the Entemann's though... possibly Krispy Kreme, back then they made actual tasty real donuts that they prepared in the company store down the road...

BTW, was this what you meant?  (Full blog post here)

Goodness, must have missed this the first time through.  Been awhile since I last donated, but I skipped Starbucks for the last two weeks so let's keep this going...

I expect in a cinemagraph much of the background is static (e.g., the clock in the first one isn't moving).

True there are a few commercial 'child minder' programs that are relatively bullet proof

I looked at these and didn't like any of them really, tried a few of the more highly ranked ones and every one of them caused problems of one sort or another, or would not respond to requests to modify the allowed or disallowed sites, etc., in a timely fashion.  They all seemed flaky to me, and the longer they ran the flakier they got.

Would it be possible to alter that task remotely?

Set up the schedule to run on your PC instead of your son's and use psexec or beyondexec to run it on his box.  Of course you have to make sure the firewall settings allow you to get in.  But then you don't have to worry about his pc's time setting, and there's nothing on his pc for him to muck about with.

Of course if he has admin privileges then all bets are off. :-)

Living Room / Re: How Google is Killing Honest (Organic) Search
« Last post by x16wda on July 02, 2013, 06:40 PM »
I remember back in The Olde Days, when I was so excited about this new search engine I had found - Google.  It always seemed to pull up the exact pages I needed!  Nobody had seen it before ("what did you say - Google??").  But it was the bomb!  Spot on almost every time!

That engine doesn't exist any longer.  The company that produced it doesn't either.  I'm sure there are some great theses about greed and how it has affected Google and everything else in our economy.  But in the end I go to Google for SEARCH.

These days Google's skewed results are back to so-so in my opinion... it's easy to get a page of dreck, with maybe a nugget or two of good stuff.  It's not as useful, not as efficient.  Not as good!  So why should I keep on Googling??

I'm really curious about how the competition stacks up.  Nobody has time to give them all a serious try.  But I know there are a lot of sharp people here who have been beating on the alternatives.  Has anyone else seen a search engine that gives you those same goosebumps, that same excited feeling, that the Google did back in the day?  Is there anything else that can give you the same great matches for what you really wanted to find?  Has the Bing vs Google blind comparison made you a believer?  Or has search engine technology pretty much evened things out?

You may want to try Dolphin Text Editor Menu.
It runs in the tray, triggered via hotkey.

I'll second that.  Very convenient.

Maybe you could include the first key in the registration validation email?  Accompanied, of course, with the appropriate verbage and additional links.

You could try using this command:

   for %i in (mbam*.txt) do type %i >> combined.txt

(If you put this in a batch file, you'd need to double the % sign.)  That's the quickie way (for a boring plain ANSI English user) although depending on content you might lose some of the more interesting characters.

I wonder if this might be okay, or maybe have a backdoor.

The NCH web site doesn't have a lot of info on what the program actually uses under the hood.  For individual files I'd rather stick with Axcrypt which is every bit as convenient and has the benefit of being free open source software.  (I haven't seen any peer reviews, but it doesn't show up in the National Vulnerability Database.

Now I just need to reread the original article to see how this relates...
