Ok... So here's what's happening. Everything works pretty well, but I'm struggling with the reports. I'll probably have to talk to Pierre and see what's possible to do exactly. I won't post the DB tonight. Maybe during the weekend. Or maybe I'll post something tomorrow... Without the fancy report capabilities. It'll be a first draft.
627
Yes for one that uses Outlook an add-in tapping into the meeting feature would be nice too.
628
Nice. But let me have a shot at it first ! I don't think it would take me more than an hour or 2 and if you haven't played with IQ's features for a while it might take you much longer.
I'll post a sample DB tomorrow, here. Is that a deal ?  :)
629
Whoa!  I didn't notice that.  I thought it was a normal shareware program.  I'm really not liking this trend of applications going web.  This is off-topic, but I normally don't like web applications vs standalones.  But I also understand that there is value to some web apps, like gmail, google docs, etc.  But I also feel that developers will push more and more for that model because it makes it more acceptable to charge monthly fees.  With regular shareware, it's a one time charge.  If this is the trend, I don't like that.

Yes, this is the trend. More power to the developper -- errrr... The big corporations ? But I won't get into that now. :)

I actually dowloaded and installed the app, for the fun of it. It's pretty well done. There's a standalone part (+ an Outlook  plug-in) and it's synchronized with the web component. However, it's not really possible to use the standalone part... Alone. There are aspects of the app where the Web app is needed (to manage projects, etc.).

From what I've seen, IQ could probably mimic most of the features (and add some more)... Except for the UI, of course. :)

There are a few features that are not fully implemented : create a calendar entry from a grid. The reverse is possible though. But I just thought that it would be nice to just enter the meeting date etc. in the grid and see it in the calendar. But that's a detail.

Anyway, back on topic...I was also thinking about setting up Infoqube.  But I haven't yet, nor do I know exactly how I would do it.  Here is the feature list I was going for:

--Firstly, the main goal here is to have a printout (report) that shows the info I want, properly formatted and all that.  If I didn't need the report, I wouldn't have even started this thread.  For example, if all I wanted was to track action items, I'd just use mylife Organized the way I'm doing now.  but when you have to share a report with people, now we're talking a different software.  I bring this up because I don't know how capable IQ is with generating reports and stuff.  I haven't explored that.
[...]
Now, let's say I have a meeting now.  I need to provide a piece of paper that is going to pull in all this information and display it somewhat nicely.  So my current meeting report will have to include:
meeting minutes from the previous meetings,
unfinished action items and their status history
recently finished action items
maybe some other stuff

IQ can generate reports. What you need to do is create a template and then IQ will fill the template with all the relevant info. I've done it for invoices and other stuff.

Look at the templates there. Is that the kind of reports you'd like ?

Depending on the kind of report you'd like, I could tell you if IQ could generate it.

It would involve (basically):
1- creating the right template
2- create a grid just for reports so that only relevant items are there

And then, all you'd have to do is to select all items and print to template. And maybe do a mail-merge from IQ or Word, depending on what works best.

--Action items:  I should be able to add action items to a list, and I should be able to tack their progress with (I'm guessing) a checkbox just to indicate if it's finished or not.  Furthermore, I'd have to be able to add status notes to those action items that explain why it's not finished yet, or what went on with it last week.  And the notes should be dated.  So each action item should have:
title, description, who it's assigned to, potentially multiple status notes (with dates)

This should be easy. You'd use a combination of fields and outline.

--Meeting minutes:  this is pretty simple.  Just a description of what was discussed during the meeting.  It could be multiple short items, or just one item (per meeting) with the details written in the html pane.  The latter is what I'd probably do since i don't like having a ton of little items for most meetings.  Just a short summary paragraph.  So each meeting should have the following information:
title, date, attendees, location, meeting minutes (notes)

This too is pretty easy to set up. Same as above : combination of fields and outline (hierarchy of items).

I don't know, that's my idea.  I guess the challenge for IQ is to do it in a way where the action item history is kept track of.  And I don't even know if IQ can do this kind of reporting.  This is pretty much MS Access kind of funcionality.  data, forms, reports...

- Generating an action history would be one of the easiest part. What would be trickier is to include "semi-automatically" in the report. That would mean that it would somehow be included in the meeting outline. It shouldn't be too hard.

- The reporting might be a bit trickier... But this is only because I haven't tried to generate that kind of report yet.

In any case, if you want I could try to generate a sample DB for minutes taking and reporting.

You could work in that DB, or eventually import it in your own. From what I've heard, Pierre is working on ways of importing fields and grids, etc. from  another DB.
630
@superboyac : I don't know exactly what you had in mind but meetingsense is not exactly free, at 20$/month per user. I'm sure there must be a better (cheaper) alternative. I was going to try creating an IQ Database just for that, for the fun of it. But I wonder what the feature list would be....

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Problems with fscript 1.20
« Last post by Armando on April 15, 2010, 08:42 PM »
If it works for you, perhaps you could do the spring cleaning and then see if you still get the problems you mentioned.  It might simplify trying to determine possible causes of the issues you encounter.

Sounds like a sound plan.

With respect to Python -- IIUC, TodoTXT may need one of ActiveState's Pythons installed due to the way FScript works.  As an example, I have a portable Python installed and my current understanding is that TodoTXT won't work with it.  Also, I vaguely recall czb mentioning something about not supporting that one any longer.

I might check that out, thanks.

Honestly though, if it's going to be "complicated", I'll just erase the todoTXT plugin. I don't use it and am not planning to use much more anytime soon.

2- some plugins just stopped working. (Like the Google Translate one : the farr window flashes briefly and I can see that the internet explorer blank page is displayed in farr's result area)
I didn't see this in the listing.  Is it installed and if so which version might it be?  What I have at hand appears to be 2.0.

You are perfectly right. I noticed that a bunch of plugins I regularly use don't appear in the plugins list.

These all belong to the CZB_pack (containing a bunch of plugins),the "fsubscript style" plugins...

I always thought that using a secondary "interface" to manage plugins was a fairly unintuitive way of doing things (there should probably be a note in the farr plugin manager informing the user about the syntax allowing to see the list -- fssc)... But anyways.

So I also use :

Character Table - 1.05 Mon Feb 23 2009
Definr.com - 1.0 Mon Feb 23 2009
Dicts.info Thesaurus - 1.0 Mon Feb 23 2009
Google Calculator - 1.0 Mon Feb 23 2009
Google Dictionary - 2.0 Tue Feb 24 2009
Google Translate - 2.0 Tue Feb 24 2009
JScalc - 2.1 Sat Mar 7 2009
Ninjawords.com - 1.0 Tue Feb 24 2009
Timer - 2.0 Fri Feb 27 2009

There were some other ones, but I deactivated them, a while ago.

One thing that puzzles me, is why does DC updater doesn't tell me that those outdated plugins should be updated ?

Thanks ewemoa for taking all that time to double check the plugins versions, etc.

I won't be able to look at that problem again today.

However :

1- I see that the DCupdater doesn't seem to work quite well here... Maybe am I not using it properly or... Does it need to be updated !  :)

2- Yes, it is correct : I don't use the todoTxt plugin. I should probably get rid of those I don't use. Spring cleaning. That said, I'm pretty sure my python installation is functional, but maybe is it a bit old, etc. I was planning to learn the language but never had the time to do it...  :-[ Got caught in other "languages" like java, vb, etc.

More tomorrow...

Thanks for the update. I'm interested to know how well MyBase will help you reach your goals.

I tried it almost 3 years ago when I was in a similar quest and decided it wasn't for me. At the time, I almost went the Ultra Recall way, but I refrained as I found it wasn't flexible enough and I hated the calendar and other aspects of it. I then tried IQ AKA SQLNotes... And I really didn't know it would become a major aspect of my computing life (I totally understand that some will find it "obtuse"... Although most of the obtuse stuff have been ironed out by now... The next big "problems" to be cleaned out are the way filters work and stuff like that. IQ's still evolving, and I know that some pretty big changes under the hood are coming quite soon. The current version is very stable).

Anyway, back to myBase... If you don't mind, I'll share with you some of the "reasons" why I didn't chose it at the time (there were many others, probably, but these are the ones that come to my mind) :

- It was hard to automatically break a document into many items and organize these quickly into an outline.
- I didn't feel like importing a whole bunch of documents into a DB, but preferred to link these to a DB (and view them from the software, "remotely" so to speak)
- there were only 2 virtualization levels, the tree itself and the labeling system (another user, cnewtone, noted that)
- some functions were slow sometimes : the searching function, the loading of saved Web pages, the pasting of big documents, the switching between "Webpage" view and "text Note" view, the indexing... - The fact that myBase didn't index automatically was a bit of turnoff.. But this might have been solved.
- didn't like that I that had to manually give titles to each of my inserted notes and made sure they were in the right category, and that was a slow process (other software -- like zoot or ultra recall at the time -- could almost automate these processes or provide other keyboard ways to speed up the process).
- Web clipping and "quick note taking" features were less sophisticated (the later being actually inexistant, I believe).
- Wasn't that fast to use the outline to quickly enter text, paragraphs, etc. as with other outliners.
- Drag and drop options weren,t that great (I remember it wasn't as developed as in other apps.)
- I also think there was no calendar or any easy ways to manage dates (but this was really a personal preference...)
- it wasn't as easy to create new fields/filed attributes, play with them, etc. But this I don't remember precisely.
- Could items have multiple parents, easily ? I'm not sure...

It could very well be that all these things were solved -- e.g. : the indexing feature is now supposed to be much faster, so...
Note that Google Desktop Search is supposed to index mybase, which could be real handy, depending on your usage.

I might actually install the latest version during the weekend and see what changed in the last 3 years. I'll probably be pleasantly surprised.

In any case... keep us posted !  :)

This just in: a high-end editing solution (which I've never tried due to it being... high end) is going to be open sourced soon:
http://www.prlog.org...source-platform.html
Sounds very powerful. Here's the product page and a promising screenshot of the UI:
http://www.editshare...d=155&Itemid=203
Note that I have read it used to be a hardware-based solution, which often means a proprietary, clunky UI and/or workflow, or at the least some odd holdovers from the days of being on a more purpose-built hardware platform. So be prepared for that. Still, a promising option, and perhaps the first real professional-level choice that the open source market has had...

- Oshyan

ooohh... Thanks Oshyan. And a free version is going to be available. I'm going to sign up to be notified when the free Lightworks application is going to be downloadable.

I remembered DC's philosophy of openness... even with those with lower brainwave frequencies...  :P ;)

Good one. Zing!

Bravo!!!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Problems with fscript 1.20
« Last post by Armando on April 14, 2010, 05:58 PM »
With all my plugins updated to fscript 1.20, I get these problems:

1- farr seems to send strings to the clipboard and strings are immediately pasted to the presently focused apps (e.g. the "search" alias does that, BUT note that the actual search is also performed --> browser opens, shows results, etc.)

2- some plugins just stopped working. (Like the Google Translate one : the farr window flashes briefly and I can see that the internet explorer blank page is displayed in farr's result area)

All my plugins + farr should be up to date... Hopefully.

For now, I went back to v 1.9... Everything seems to be working now.
637
I know. And, for that very reason, I wanted to discard these reviews as being totally irrelevant. But then... I remembered DC's philosophy of openness... even with those with lower brainwave frequencies...  :P ;)
639
There has been a break in the posting stream in this thread, so I expect we now are done with the zillion dollar programs, or what? Why must I come here for a free or low cost editor and be told that a $600 editor is what I need?

.. I am hoping I can find something that doesn't require a 2 month learning course to understand and hopefully it would also be free or at least cheap.

"Any suggestions?" -as he also were asking.
 :tellme:

I see other prices than 600$.

@Armando:

I think Vegas is way faster than Premiere. Also Adobe apps have turned into bloatware. To instal one Adobe app, you need to install some other crap too even if you unselect many other crap.

Yes, that's also what I said. Premiere is bloated and buggy. It has some strengths  though.
640
[slightly off topic]
Ah. I think see what  JohnFredC was after -- the actual DB model.
IQ is more of an associative DB ( http://en.wikipedia....iative_model_of_data , http://www.adit.co.u...ative_databases.html )
[/slightly off topic]

In any case, it boils down to answers to a few questions :

about You
1- what do you want to do ? (Josh's first post is pretty clear)
2- what compromises are you willing to make ?
3- how much time and efforts are you willing to invest to achieve what you want to do ?

about the app
4- will this or this app be able to help you achieve something close to what you want ?
5- What compromises/sacrifices will you necessarily have to make if you use this app ?
6- how long (how much effort) is it going to take to achieve what you want with that app ?

Etc.

I don't think there's an application out there that does all Josh wants, without some time investment and without any sacrifices.

Ultra Recall could do some or most of it, probably, like IQ, for sure. Other apps too... It depends on the answers to the above questions..

Josh : did you try a few of these apps ? What are your impressions ?

More details about the errors :

Access violation at address 7712A512 in module  OLEAUT32.dll. Read of address 02A51000

OLEAUT32.dll isn't always mentioned in error messageshttp://search.msn.com/results.asp?q=eaccess violation. But, the EAccess Violation message is almost always mentioned when there's a crash.

Memory management problems in the code ? wrong version for OLEAUT32.dll ? In any case, seems like a memory management problem to me.
642
For pro editing you basically have 3 choices on Windows :

- Adobe Premiere
- Sony Vegas Pro.
- Avid (liquid 7 probably)

I can't afford any of these -- and maybe are they to expensive for you too -- but I did work with Premiere and Sony in University labs for a project last year. Unfortunately I can't comment on Avid (they might have downloadable demo though... Haven't checked -- avid used to require special hardware and the university had a few computers with these, but... They were already used for some other projects...).

Premiere is complex and can do a lot. Some Pros : The fact that it can be used with photoshop, After effects, etc. is a big plus. Some Cons : However : 1- when I used CS4, it was highly unstable. Crashed all the time. 2- simple actions were often hard to achieve. 3- I didn't like the rendering default settings for mpeg compression and was never able to achieve the quality I was after.

Sony Vegas pro can probably do almost anything premiere does. Pros : 1- It's easier to use, very efficient : many actions are performed in at least half the time (than premiere). 2- It's also VERY VERY stable. It never crashed once when I used it. This is a big big plus for me. 3- Rendering to mpeg was a breeze and high quality.

If I was going to buy something, it would be Sony vegas. Unless Avid proves to be superior... But I honestly wonder how it could be.
643
I was looking for some super app launcher to replace the taskbar's address bar (yes, I used it as an app launcher for a long while before app launchers for keyboard addicts even existed)... And after using some other app launcher (can't remember the name... I don't think it still exist) I found Farr (thanks mouser...). I used Farr for a little while, and maybe after a few weeks, I joined DC.

I updated all fscript and it doesn't work.

I get these errors :

1- EAccess Violation
2- "Access violation at address 00437A6C in module 'FindAndRunRobot.exe'. Read of address 00000260."

These usually happen when I use an "advanced" syntax option like :

ws firstname:armando

(But all this is still a bit imprecise... So don't loose time with it. I might come up with more details during the week...)

I don't know if this is relevant but, FWIW, I think the latest version of FScript is 1.20 -- at least it looks that way currently:

  http://e.craft.free.fr/farr/FScript/

You are completely right.  :-[

I'll update all FScript to the latest version right away.

Thanks !

hi phitsc,

I know this isn't a precise indication, but farr seems to track the problem to fscript.dll (in the \FSubScript folder). That's what a dialog says when farr is restarted.

I already updated the fscript.dll (all of them, in all plugins folders) to version 1.9.0.0 (the last one, it seems). Maybe should I downgrade to a previous version.

What version do you use?

Thanks!

Thanks for a great plugin. I decided to ditch Google Desktop Search for my Outlook indexing, in favor of Windows Search because of the Farr integration.

I do get crashes, once in a while, when I use "Advanced Query Syntax" (or maybe are there other conditions involved).

This plugin + the TinyEverything plugin... And we have the most powerful launcher here. None of other launchers can integrate these as seamlessly. There's executor, but it's not developed actively.

The way I'm integrating all this : Windows search indexes Outlook, everything indexes all my hard drives file names. (Then, for content specific searches, I use Archivarius... But this is not integrated in farr, which is not a problem.) Work flow is perfect.

perhaps it makes sense to create a public Redmine project instance so we can all collaborate on research, discussion, and planning...

I'm willing to participate. Bare in mind that I'm not real coder -- I know IQ very well though and can script if necessary.

[/quote]
They go the route of "this is the way to do things for this industry", which as I said above could be a good thing, *but* they frankly appear to be too rigid in certain areas, basically requiring you buy into their solution end-to-end, or go with specific vendors, etc.

Exactly. And I find that it's good to have some flexibility and be able to adjust the product as needs arise.

Before we go too far, have you looked into existing software packages to see if there might already be something that does the job and is affordable for them?

I suggest that you take a look at an online solution.  I serve on the board of a small nonprofit and did a search for them to address what sounds like similar problems.  I was quite impressed with Zoho's CRM solution.  They haven't yet chosen to put it into play so I cannot testify to how well it works in practice, but my test drive (free) impressed me.  It's free for three users and $12/user/month above that:  ZohoCRM Pricing.

These are important considerations... and this is what I'm about to do myself : see what the current solutions look like and then try to build a similar solution with IQ. The Zoho CRM seems like a good starting point as far as features are concerned.

Then there's the pricing. For Zoho At 12$/month, this is 144$ per user each year (Professional edition). I wonder how that would compare against something like IQ + taking into account the time to customize the interface, DB, etc.
From the website, it would be something like 200$ for 3 licenses (3-license pack for the price of a regular license) -- that's cheaper than zoho for sure... But doesn't take into account any customization time.

In any case... I'll wait for the next posts here.
