I wonder what an articel about "Five Years DC" would sound like...

It's good we keep these old threads alive: the forums feels deeper somehow with all the historical facts still present.

I only caught part of the talk because I had to keep so many aliens in check onboard our space station.

However, the concept seems interesting: Instead of working with (the bugs of) a program, users complete tasks. On the desktop you see objects and tasks, or objects and connections to other objects. So the user gets a good overview of how things/objects/people interact.

You can even share your desktop/workspace! And I think this is best thing about it: to be able to take this "semantic thing" to the collaborative level. After all, people want to connect and share ideas; making this possible in an easier fashion is good.

On the other hand, it will require a little bit re-training yourself if you are - like me -used to working with programs. I will give DeepaMehta a spin, but I don't think I'll switch completely yet. The visual appeal is not there yet.

It also reminded me of mozilla's ubiquity thing, which I also will try out soon; a friend has been using it for some time and is very happy about it, limited as it is.

Later today I'll attend a short talk about Deepa Mehta, which to me looks like a Semantic Desktop or at least a Semantic Filemanager.

rox-filer has a button in its toolbar that toggles visibility of hidden files, but rox-filer is not readily available for windows. However, I think it might be more convenient to have this button directly in Windows Explorer, so you can quickly change the setting while you are actually active in that window.

General Software Discussion / Re: which Linux version for my laptop

Darwin - I also have yet to try xubuntu and I don't really see myself going for it. I do not have the need. People say it is snappier than the gnome desktop from ubuntu. However, I think my ultra customized rox-desktop is still superfast and functional...

If you want to try for yourself: "xubuntu-desktop" installs everything for the xubuntu version, "ubuntu-desktop" and "kubuntu-desktop" do the same for ubuntu and kubuntu resp. You can choose your desktop during logging in under "Session".

Davidtheo - I agree with Edvard: ubuntuforums is a very good place to start searching. It might be a little overwhelming at first, so just take your time :-)

Always go with the package manager of your distribution!

In case of ubuntu there is one mighty package manager named "apt" which has several frontends. Personally, I prefer "aptitude"; "synaptic" is quite sophisticated (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager), simpler is Applications > Add/Remove

Debian has the same tools. Fedora has "yum", Suse Yast and Yast2 as frontends for their package manager rpm.

All these frontends let you search and install programs and anything those program need (they call it dependencies).

Now, Linux and multimedia sometimes work flawlessly and sometimes just barely. I can't decide between amarok, mpd, or rhythmbox for my MP3 playing. On the other hand, I decided on mplayer for watching any kind of multimedia file because it is the best.
637
Mono is supposed to be .net for linux. Also supposedly it supports .net 2.0, but not the cool stuff from 3.x.

Congratulations for your first ubuntu package. I think making a proper package is very important. I like it when programs can be uninstalled as easily and swiftly as they had been installed.

From personal experience I can recommend the new ubuntu version 8.10 (codename intrepid ibex). It works very well on my new thinkpad. But first ask your friends who use linux which distribution they use and choose the same. They will be the ones helping you, and it is easier to help on familiar ground.

As for instant messaging with MSN, there is a multiprotocol (multiplatform too!) instant messaging client "pidgin". It lets me chat with my one friend in Thailand that is still using MSN. However, I doubt things like videochat will work.

libavg was developed by one of our members. In the showcase on libavg.de you will find more references to c-base.

A couple of scenes for several movies were shot on the c-base as well ("Tatort: Tod einer Heuschrecke", to name just one). And just last night a team from the local TV station came by to shoot for a short documentary.

Who came up with this vision for c-base and its mythical origins?
This piece of information is not available to me, we are still trying to decipher the memory crystals we found in the probe "Siri" which was ejected just before the crash and which has a complete (we hope) backup of c-beam's data. c-beam is the board computer of the space station; it is functional again insofar as it announces the time every hour, and it can relay messages via a text2speec interface.

Where are the fembot portals?!
Prof. Kirsch is our main researcher. He has (re)built and created several alien robots already. Some had to be taken apart immediately, some commited suicide and some still won't move after all these years, so we put them up for display. But even so we cannot yet tell the gender of a robot, and we are not even sure if they have genders at all, or how many there might be.

sounds great housetier
It is great! :-)

Any pictures of the space(s) ?
There are a lot, however they are spread across several servers and services. You will find bunch on flickr and we used to have our own gallery but someone broke it during upgrade. I have been tasked with collecting all the different sources of c-media, but it will take time and I haven't even started yet so I can't post specific links as of yet.

whats the deal with the "space station that crashed 4.5 billion years ago"  :tellme: :)
There is an article in the English wikipedia about our space station. And even though the URL says "C-base" it is important to always write it in lowercase: "c-base"!

AFAIK the word "space" has more than one meaning in the English language: one is the universe and the other meaning is that of a smaller designated area such as a room. This works very well in German: space means "Raum", which is the same as Weltraum (universe) and "Raum" as area or room.

Now, the space station is both a transgalactic transport vehicle (well we aim to restore the engines so we can take off) and it offers space for its members and associates to do their thing.

(This one is going to be tricky) The space station c-base clearly is from the future which is why it crashed 4.5 billion years ago.

For projects to succeed on board they must be future compatible, and we have mustered chronicle services to reinforce this rule.

C-logo_claim_blue.png

Some of you might know I am a member of the club c-base e.V. (import the root certificate from cacert.org to avoid error messages from good browsers). Our goal is to reconstruct a space station that crashed 4.5 billion years ago. It is directly under the city of Berlin in Germany. Reconstructing not only means to restore buildings or make the facilities work again, it also means to bring back to live the old and lost culture of the former inhabitants of the space station and to restore the lost knowledge we find in excavated data storage items.

What we do (totally incomplete)
So the c-base builds things and cultures. We throw parties and hold conferences, also Aliens (non-members) can rent those parts of the space station that has already been rebuilt for parties and conferences.

Big Events
One of those conferences from Aliens was the Maemo Summit 2008, which was sponsored by Nokia of Finland. We had over 250 developers listening to three parallel tracks; they also brought the wireless network we had set up for them to the limit. It was a huge event, one of the biggest in the 12-year history of c-base e.V.. It was also the best - all the Alien guest we had on board were amazed, blown away, avid, or simply stunned by our club. Among those Aliens were managers from Nokia, one of them even agreed to be interviewed. So that is an outside voice speaking about Nokia, Maemo and the ultimate impression c-base has left on him.

Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Why I mention this? Because my name is mentioned in the interview! :D When you listen to it, he says that I had been working 24 hours a day "which is basically insane". My job on board the space station is that of an event manager, so I was indeed working day and night to get "my people" whatever they needed. It was extremely exhausting so I think I deserve the praise and the fame too :D

There are more videos about c-base to be found on youtube and vimeo, I will try to dig them all up and post here. That will give you even more weird pieces of information about our space station.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions! This club is very dear to me so I will be glad to talk about it. Also, if you want to hold a conference, a meeting, a hackfest at an extraordinary place in Berlin, please just send an email to [email protected]

blogger.com and its clones (there are too many) are fine if you only want to post news. If you want to do more, Drupal is a CMS I want to suggest.

It does not really matter which CMS you choose though, as long as you can work with it. Wordpress is also much more than just a "blog engine", just like Drupal (which I prefer :D).

I recommend Das Keyboard. It looks damn cool and it will very very quickly improve your typing skills. It is supposed to be based on the famous IBM Model M keyboard, with mechanical keys and audible clicks. The next keyboard I buy, it's gonna be this one.

Now if only they had an illuminated version...

I do not trust skype. I cannot make sure my data is really secure. We use it at work but only for general chit-chat, we do not send confidential or sensitive information.

If you want something like IRC but more secure have a look at silc.

If there is personal or other sensitive information involved: be paranoid!

housetier finally has a decent system! I gave it myself for my 30th birthday :)

Actually getting it was rather difficult: when I had chosen a system and arranged for payments, it always would be sold out, so I had to go and find the next affordable deal, make arrangements, only to find it out of stock again... But this time it worked out and I now have a system lets me watch anime in that bloody x264 codec!
