IV forum seems to be down.

AFAIR such feature was "no no" for a long time on Irfan's board with explanations that IV is not filemanager but viewer and there is no reason for supporting it. There were also some voices that it is stupid to keep images in archives (nvm trolls ;). It looked like no one knew about comics (CBZ, CBR) after all.

For now Google shows some archived posts from February that this is planned and author is working on implementation. Few months passed and nothing more has been posted since then :(

- well, you are a coder, aren't you?

Do you think that's the reason?

For me it's simple: I don't make hundreds of photos to be in need for some cataloguing features of viewers. Even if I made them, I am trying to keep my folders structure organized and in the most of cases I know where I put what I need.

I am using TC because it is easier for me and I don't really need more than it can provide. Of course, I have XnV as default application for Enter key but I use it that way very rarely. For me more important is XnConvert tool.

How TC can be better for me?

Well, there are couple of reasons:

  • Dozen of plugins allows me to preview or to have thumbnails for hundreds file formats.
  • In addition to the above I can use XnV through TC interface for unknown types.
  • If there is no good (or any) XnV plugin for something, I can write my own WLX easily as long as there is some converter for it. I did it for SVG files and it works not so bad for me. I don't know XnV API but writing thumbnails support for TC is piece of cake.

It is just easier and quicker to use TC to find out the picture I was looking for.

Last thing is that I have never seen "general" image viewer with good icons preview. Really. Almost all of them shows you the best ICO they can get and you have no possibility to see how many icons are within. ICO files can contain many of these with various sizes and palettes. Viewers gives you only one but for TC - ICLView plugin is what I need.

I agree with you but there is one more annoying thing: crippled search with no links to posts with desired phrase. Instead of that, you receive list with URLs either to the beginning or to the end of monstrous thread. They give you some highlight, obviously, but I just f*ng hate to browse 20-pagers to discover that looked word was mentioned once with different context.

I fully understand that it's impossible to create one and universal list but they should consider their own ratings at least!

The Witcher is 38th with 8.5 (great) points while Helldorado - 13th with 5.7 (mediocre). That is some kind of joke to say Helldorado is way better than The Witcher. Quick look on Gamespot shows: W - 8.5 (great), H - 4.5 (poor). Both sites show that H is a crap but IGN list suggest something different.

You can't measure "enjoyability" but you can "reliability" :)

For convenience I have Microsoft Office Picture Manager 2003 as default; it is by far the fastest to use when I need to crop or resize an image.

For me Imagine plugin plays such role but that's because I am Total Commander junkie ;)

Unicode is not handled perfectly in IV too. Irfan's support is not built-in and external plugin is used instead. Starting IV by double-clicking on problematic file does not always work and only loading it via File -> Open (or via Space key when IV is already running) gives expected results.

As you wrote, XnV doesn't handle Unicode named files correctly so IV wins here. Hopefully: upcoming XnViewMP will solve this problem (works nicely in beta) once for all.

One thing about "stealing": I've been using both viewers for years and not even once I thought something was copied in any way. Although I am sure that Irfan should steal Configuration dialogue ;) It is not normal to have so many "misc" pages within (and tabs at all).

I can swear I've tried my best and I just can't work with it. I am lost with TC and it seems that other file managers do not exist for me (at least mouse oriented ones) or placebo gives the feeling they are slower* ;)

If only someone could convince him the error of his ways regarding descript.ion files as well his product would become extremely interesting for my uses.

Being curious: what error?

*) Well… that and "XPCom not initialized." errors while browsing my folders with Preview panel switched ON.

Thanks for the list but I guess this list is more relevant for us, PC Gamers!
http://pc.ign.com/top-pc-games/

Not really. It contains not released titles like "Diablo III" or "Prototype". Even if they will be finished in 21st century (and I believe Prototype will be awesome), that's way to far to put the game in "Top Something" before premiere.

Edited: I've browsed through mentioned list and I see that most of the titles I didn't know are rated pretty bad by IGN themself. This list is "Top talked" not "Top enjoyable". I do not believe that "no matter what they're talking, it's important they're talking at all"  rule is good one :)

Damn, fenix.  You sure like TC!

That's true but something is more important: I wrote review of beta version so I feel this is a right thing to do to inform "followers" about fixes. It is normal that beta versions may contain some bugs so updates are important to anyone who tries them. I also think that there are some DC members who are not watching official TC board so I "have to" keep 'em in touch :)

Total Commander 7.50 PB 4 is out!

About 50 bugs fixed and 5 new features added.

I am looking for a few good PURE SPEED songs.

I am going to sleep now but I can recommend "Manowar › Black Wind, Fire & Steel":
http://www.jango.com/music/Manowar?l=0

Hm, I don't know is it the kind of speed you like but it was always giving me furious pogo dance on concerts. I know there is a lot of stuff with more power but I've always hated songs which I couldn't understand because of growling, so they are nonexistent for me :)

Now aren't you sorry you didn't break out the chicken outfit?  :)

Nope. I've used to it long time ago. It was painful first time though*.

*) Like an idea for action movie when murderer shoots through peephole to victim. It was used in "The Pelican Brief" film IIRC. Or an idea from "real live RPG sessions" for a character with power of annihilating anything which allows him to copy feed's characteristics thanks to that. Well, some game (called Prototype) will be released soon with exactly the same hero I had in mind.

I just have too big imagination sometimes :)

Interesting article but something else bothers me: is Wakoopa tool working on PC all of the time? Does it report loaded software continuously?

For me it is very strange that in times of spyware fighting, ads and cookies blocking, there are 75k members who allows themselves to be "tracked" willingly in the meaning of "socialising"? Come on!

I know I have nothing against making a list of software I use or even running some logging system and update it to server later but having "tracker" in background as long as I use my PC sounds fishy. I know I might be paranoid here but it's at least users' hypocrisy from my point of view.

PS. I wonder how many users have something like "crack.exe" in their stats :D

Thanks for an update. I will play with it soon.

Works nicely but I have few more suggestions for showPopupNotification:
- timeout (hide it after that),
- position (bar center, or close to plugin control),
- MouesOut hiding.

As for ideas: I've got too many of these ;)

1 & 2.

I have XP SP3 here and it seems like ClearType problem for me.

toptoolbar.PNG

3. Yes. This is what I meant.

4. Strange. It does not happen now but I could reproduce it yesterday (no matter with or without restart).

6 & 8. OK. Now I understand.

7. No. I mean red icon in top right corner which allows to shutdown / hibernate / etc. my system. I have no need for icon which could be used by me only for shutdown once per day. Currently it's not a problem because there are not so many plugins but these 16px of space can be used differently later (especially when alignment will be implemented).

10. Will wait then (or put it through Reflector) :)

Does DO have a function to save selected files to list*? If yes, what is the format of such file?

I could try to write second version with multiple files handling. It shouldn't be hard :)

*) In TC you just select files and pass %L parameter (which is replaced by i.e. c:\tmp\list.txt file) to proper application.

Edited

If your files selection is stored in list file where each name is in separate line, similar to:
D:\code\AutoHotkey\Compiler\Ahk2Exe.exe
D:\code\AutoHotkey\Compiler\README.txt

Then AHK code for v.2. is:
if 0 < 1
{
MsgBox, You must specify list file name!
}
else
{
Loop
{
FileReadLine, line, %1%, %A_Index%

if ErrorLevel
break

FileSetTime, , %line%, M
}
}

Of course, you need to start second version with list name as parameter.

I did not check but it should also work with folders.

as I say - if I have to 'send' the file to any programme, it works out quicker to actually open file in default programme and resave it.
-tomos

It's not always true. The only thing this script (compiled to exe) does is changing modified date. That is all. Default applications need to read whole file content and in most of the cases they will be slower because of that.

thanks for the AHK script but same problem there I think - when I try to open it it says I have to specify filename - that means in the script I presume? or was it intended to be used another way?
-tomos

It is meant to be started with filename as parameter. If there is no parameter -> message is shown.

The best for you would be to compile it to EXE and to follow this article:
http://lifehacker.co...d-to-menu-136345.php

It should solve "missing file" problem.

P.S. I don't know DO but in TC you can create button with this application and drop needed file on it. Perhaps it's possible in DO too (or start application with selected file name as parameter).

Maybe add 'SetFileDate' to Windows "Send to" menu?

Personally I would use Total commander for that but DO or XYplorer should have it too!

Edited…

Single file AHK:
if 0 < 1
{
MsgBox, You must specify file name!
}
else
{
FileSetTime, , %1%, M
}
