Living Room / Re: wanted: quiet external HD (case) (not wanted: crying children)
« Last post by brotherS on January 20, 2007, 06:30 AM »
I'd buy an IDE/SATA enclosure that plugs in via USB. That will allow you to use any drive as "hot-swappable."
Are there cases that offer a good noise level and at the same time grant easy access to the HD?
That way I could use another old HD in the same case at a different time.

If you have motherboard support for it, I'd get an eSATA enclosure... faster & more stable than usb/firewire stuff.
No, my PC is too old for that. Hmm... I never even consciously heard "eSATA" being mentioned anywhere.

Ok, I sold some old CDs, with the $10 I got I hereby start a "DimSaver improvement fund" - he who improves it like described above gets it.

Thanks!

Hi Eye-R, welcome to the forum! We prefer regular English in here (hint: t3h d4rknezZ surR0unDz m3H ISN'T, neither "y", "r", "u", "ur", "wut", "wat", "ne1", "sum1" etc.), please no SMS-speak... for your other chats get:

And why are you using space at the beginning of your lines? :o

Is that an artificially set date or do you marry/divorce/start your own business/... on Feb. 1st?
somehow artificial, as I'm going to work for a new company on Feb. 1st after 8 years in this one...
Ah, good luck with that!

Noone here could help with regard to my problem above? :(

Would it be possible, though, for those of us who have already voted to get a look now and then -- to see how our age range is coming along? :D
Huh? After you voted you should always be able to see the 'real-time' poll results.

i don't know about quiet but carol bought a nice that uses slots that i like - in which cas you would put your own hard drive inside it - and would buy yourself a quiet drive (vs one of those super fast noisy ones).
Aaah, that's a solution I completely forgot about! Are there IDE-based-solutions that are hot-swappable now?

in general it seems to me that my external hard drives are quieter than any drives in my pc - not sure why.
I can't second that, my Samsung SpinPoint drives were always very quiet.

Hi!

You know how quickly little children can fill their eyes with tears?

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/1447/daddydrinksbecauseicrywj3.jpg

My HD is not filling as quickly but now it's full. I don't want to burn what's on it and thus need an external HD. Since there seem to be 2602960123 different models available, I need your help.

What model would accompany my quiet PC (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6318.0) perfectly? Price is important, but silence too.

I still own a HD (with just a few dozen GB) in a bad case - I suppose it's possible to use that and the new one simultaneously, both using USB?

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: DimSaver *improvement* needed!
« Last post by brotherS on January 18, 2007, 05:07 AM »
DimSaver (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3095.0) still isn't running perfectly here, and MAYBE I finally figured out a way to fix it.

If not, this would 'just' make DimSaver a bit better :)

DimSaver has "Actions that closes DimSaver" options (maybe rename that to "Actions that close DimSaver"?):
  • Mouse Moves
  • Mouse Clicks
  • Keys

I need a new option, "Mouse is moved for more than ____ milliseconds"! That should hopefully fix my problem, *and* it would allow users to click to another window or close something without disabling the screen-saver.

I'd love it! :-*

If you can spare the time, you might also want to add an "Keyboard used for more than ____ milliseconds" option, which would be very helpful too!

Skrommel sadly seems to have lost interest in DimSaver, maybe I asked for too many features (sorry!) :-[

Anyone up to this task?

Hey! no discrimination here!  We're all older than we want to be and younger than we need to be... er, ... or is it the other way around?
I'm being told that my thinking capabilities are ahead of my official age, and that my how-old-I-look-looks are years behind. I like that. 8)

I'm only in my age bracket for the next couple of months.  :o
That's called aging and is nothing to get overly anxious about. 8)

The Brother MFC is here and installed!

But the documentation sucks... they almost only focus on the printing and fax option... The PaperPort doc isn't as good as I wished either...

What I wonder most: how is OmniPage going to work together with PaperPort? As in: how can I automate the creation of PDF files that are searchable? The PDF files that PaperPort now creates aren't searchable :(

The software for my Canon scanner used to do that in one fell swoop, I just had to click a button. How do I reach that goal now?

Another great article is *How Shall We Live?* (http://www.stevepavl...e-how-shall-we-live/) from our much-loved Steve Pavlina. Beware, contains lots of great thinking!

PS: Although I recognize that DC is mostly about software, I still find it interesting to see the low number of replies in this thread...

Maybe it's only me, but I'd *really* like a text editor (free and fast if possible) that offers some kind of customizable zoom feature, like Word or Firefox for example. More like Firefox, which allows to increase/decrease with "Ctrl and +"/"Ctrl and -", would be best.

Is there something like that? Maybe even with nice little features like "ESC works like Alt+F4 key combination" like win32pad (https://www.donation...x.php?topic=1000.0)?

He has some good points!

Among other things, I tried mind maps too, but somehow I always tend to end up putting info in a simple .txt or .doc file, where I can most easily and quickly edit it, remove stuff or move stuff around.

EDIT: I just realized I want a better editor: https://www.donation...index.php?topic=7041

I need to get going and start something soon, my goal is to go paperless at home on Feb. 1st. :-[

Looking forward to a paperless home too! :)

Developer's Corner / Re: How long should a software time trial be?
« Last post by brotherS on January 16, 2007, 08:47 AM »
It's interesting.. but then im not sure just because a certain policy would get the most buyers means its the best thing to do..
It's an important 'first step'.

other factors might be: how happy are people once they buy it.  how much do they regret buying it later?  the people who don't buy - what's their attitude about your company in the future?
You can combine that with a "money back" guarantee or whatever to minimize negative side-effects. :)

Another book I highly recommend is *As a Man Thinketh*!

You can get it for free at http://www.asamanthinketh.net/ (they just want your email address but they look like good guys). If that's too much for you, Amazon will gladly ship it to you for a few bucks: http://www.amazon.co...-Allen/dp/087516000X

"I have personally read As a Man Thinketh over 25 times. Timeless material." -  Mark Victor Hansen, co-author, the Chicken Soup books

“I read As a Man Thinketh once a year for over 15 years when I was in my 20s and 30s.” - Paul J. Meyer, recognized as one of the leading self-improvement authors of all time

“Some books are so good and meaningful that you read them again and again. Primarily because you know the substance and content is so important that you need to be reminded of what it has to say. As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen is just such a book.”  -    Book Review, Michigan Chronicle

I use NeatReceipts in my home office.  www.neatreceipts.com
Wow, they have nice video demos on their site! Combining a small, easy-to-handle scanner with some special is a nice idea. It must be close to perfect if you want a small and portable solution.

I ordered the Brother MFC-5440CN I described above, looking forward to less paper! :)

same effect.  the # can be replaced with the attachment # if you want to reorder the which attachment images go where.
Then please edit my first post above so I can check it out :D

I tried it but wasn't able to get it working, it still isn't obvious to me how it should work.
