Living Room / Re: Windows performance tips in one spot

f0dder,

It would be neat if you could post a page with a green, yellow or red light next to that list of items suggested for speed enhancements. Sounds like a drug deal here.  :P

In reference to one of my previous posts here (is XP SP2 necessary?) i've decided to simply avoid installing SP2 and disable System Restore. Talk about speed!

All things considered, we can still hope and expect something "better" from the OpenSource arena.
Who could ever even think that Firefox could ever make it to the big league?

OpenOffice is making nice strides and when you take into consideration the Google baking for SunOffice and Firefox, i'm not ready to say the battle is over.
628
Very subjective - thunderbird is one of the last tools I would want to use to handle my email...   :D

I found Outlook to be like most other MSN products: à la bloated, slow to start up and close and very hard to backup/restore.

Thunderbird is open to extensions and themes that make it fun.

ProcessTamer / Re: Can Process Tamer tame Firefox ?

I'm testing CPUIdle side by side with ProcessTamer.
So far so good.

If that includes virtual pizzas that taste real, i'm in!

Seriously, CPUIdle feature as some kind of option would make it THEEEE BEST!

Best E-mail Client / Re: DreamMail

It's a good program but i still prefer Thunderbird for IMAP support (which Foxmail does not have).
One thing i haven't tried yet, it's to get a new LIVE email address and see if it works with Foxmail.

Update: my hunch was right, no support for new LIVE mail accounts (unless you pay).

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 20$ off XYplorer and lifetime license

XYEplorer's tab initiative is marvellous!
I regret not seeing the preview in better slot position like Xplorer2 on the left or PowerDesk which has four options to choose from.

I've become disappointed with most of these Explorer alternatives.
Xplorer2 for example won't delete a folder. Error messages that tell me it's being used by another program. Ha! If i use Windows Explorer, no problem.

XY's search feature is nice addon but you can always get the free AgentRansack or shareware version (Filelocator Pro) which i find even quicker.

OK - update: I've heard from the developer of Check&Get...
I am somewhat mollified. As I noted in the note above, I'm pretty happy just to know that C&G is a going concern and is moving forward

Your wording may have had something to do with it.
"Mollified"? Have to look that one up!  ;D

It's good to know they are actively working on a newer version, as it has been quite some time since last (even beta).

A few years ago, like once upon a time...
C & G would respond to my few emails but it now seems that they end up hitting a brick wall with no bouncing back.
They simply do not respond.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ultra Explorer; I am impressed!
« Last post by dantheman on September 25, 2007, 09:55 AM »
I installed Ultra Explorer 2 week ago and... was impressed too.

BUT... The only problem is that it crashes very often on my PC (and I lost my configuration each time it did).

Anybody experienced crashes?

I was just about to write that. Yes, it crashed the very day i installed it and tried to save a folder as default. Not a good first impression.
PowerDesk Pro has become my default. Although my preference above others, even it has it's own glitches every once in a while, so i end up going back to Windows Explorer in certain situations.

With regards to a recent post. Can we hope that FARR will have a better file search, not only than UltraExplorer etc. etc. but even better than CopernicDS or Google's?   :-*

What exactly is the Imageshack issue? I don't use it but worked fine when I tried:
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7858/testsm3.png

Tested using the web site and with the bookmarklet button too: http://www.codeminde.../imageshack/shackit/

It's not a BIG issue, but i was used to having the toolbar on Firefox.
Have been trying since yesterday to get to the ImageShack tools section to no avail. Your bookmarklet is your no.1 !
638
@nontroppo,

That's a good tip!
Set up a link for it on my personal bar.

Now if i can find someway to make ImageShack work with Opera...

Anyway, Opera is ... well... almost 100% my default browser.
Do like Firefox. It's hard to choose between these two. They're both excellent browsers but i must say Opera's latest alpha is truly innovative. Something we haven't seen in the last couple of years.
639
Mr. Wolf,

I've always gone to Opera as my second non-IE choice for lack of features but this latest Alpha has a few things going for it and according to the info available through this link, it seems they have a few more tricks up their sleeves.

I just did a fresh install of this alpha program and must say i am impressed!
The history search integrated into url addressbox is just fantastic!

Also, the browser doesn't feel like an alpha program at all.
No errors coming around anywhere.

Who knows! I may have to change my default browser (FF)!

General Software Discussion / Re: Top 3 programs you use
« Last post by dantheman on September 13, 2007, 07:32 PM »
OK, by popular demand: Chapter by Chapter -- or CbC, for short!

CbC essentially manages a book manuscript, which is kept in separate chapter files.  This add in, which works as a small separate program, sits on top of Microsoft Word.

Once CbC is open, one enters a new chapter title, which opens up a blank page in Word, where one writes or imports a chapter, or at least the beginnings.  Then start another chapter, and so on.  Soon CbC displays in its window a list of all your chapters, all stored in sepapate Word files, including word count for each one.  One can drag and drop each chapter into a different order, rearranging one's book.  And if one needs to see the entire book in one file, a click of the mouse brings them all together in a single file, where one can do editing, paginating, change format to suit a particular publisher.

I'm working on a huge book project.  I've tried so many different programs to manage the project -- and I always return to CbC.  And it's free.

Ya. The process is rather tedious but i'm keeping this thread as it has many useful tips.

BTW, i also received a copy of OneNote 2007.
If anyone would like to make a switch for some other program... i'm game!
TreePad Business ed. beats it hands down!

After a well deserved annual weeks' holiday, i'm back!

During that time, someone gave me the extra funds to bring my notebook up to a total of 1.2Gigs of RAM! The stick was practically impossible to find but the computer store managed to pull it through for me! It's the most i can get for my machine.

Problem? Well, it just didn't do a single thing to improve my startup/shutdown time.

Now i've gone back to a fresh installation with a direct wire connecting me to the "company" network. So far i've been doing much better than in the past. Reboot a few times brought me quickly back to the network with printer setup and all. The connection to the internet has improved as well. Falling down a few times at the beginning but after over an hour, it's still hanging in there.

My hunch is the D-link box. I need a new and improved one.

...
How about other people using the network? Can you narrow it down to your own computer only or do others suffer from the same problem?

Well you see, when in regular runofthemillsituation everyone is on the Network. No problems.
I'm the one with the problems as often re-install and everytime i re-install i initially startup with my "own" network to get onto the web using the existing network groups' p.w.

Then, i eventually setup with the Network groups name and after a few reboots (5 or more) i can access the network printer and share files.

The tech savvy guy doesn't understand why this happens.

Boy! You guys just lost me on this defrag stuff!
Doesn't take much to do that but...
if i can turn back a bit with regards to removing a network connection...

Yesterday my confrère made us change the configuration to the dlink.
The internet and network connection kept falling all the time.
The new password could not be remembered...
Playing with removing wired connections to the box itself, rebooting the computers (others had same issue).
Nothing worked.
Then i finally decided to try what was suggested here.
Hey? Why not remove the connection and start over?
It did the trick!

So now i'm wondering...
When i first do a fresh install of the pc i get onto the internet with pw but not to the network.
When i finally do a request to config a network connection through the proper id the house has with same pw,
it takes a few reboots (sometimes 5 or more) then it finally works.
Where am i getting to?
Well, still trying to figure out why the internet connection failed even if hooked up to network?
Was the driver upgrade i recently did the main reason for making it stick or was it simply the SP2 (which always did the trick)? If so, why is SP2 so necessary for internet connection?

Now i have another problem!
 :'(
Will i find the money to purchase CPUidle which seems to be effectively doing whatever it's doing...   :P
cthorpe - the official DC discount co-ordinator has sent an email to the author.. let's see how things turn out :)

btw, glad to see things working out for you.. Carol and Darwin have already listed out some useful tools and for my part, i'd like to suggest that you use the forum search to find more about the freeware alternative used by DC members.

as an example, i use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to control start-up programs more effectively. :)

Lanux,

Will be on the lookout for that eventual discount for sure!

The posts here have been quite informative and much appreciated, thank you!
I already had Diskeeper to defrag and TuneUp Utilities to keep me in touch with various things but it's always good to learn about valid alternatives and to discover useful tips.

BTW, did i read elsewhere that a newborn has become a special member of your family?
Best wishes to the proud parents!
 :)

"By Georges" i think we're onto something!

Broadcom answered my request for support sending me over to my computer maker.
Hence, i went over to HP's site and randomly installed a few driver upgrades (not too sure which was best but took most recent) and it's been just fine since last night. No downtime in either network or internet connection!
Yay!   ;D

@Carol,
I'm afraid the only moveable thing on this notebook is the extra RAM.

Well, so far so good and i haven't upgraded to SP2 yet!
Did notice a slower start up with other upgrades though.
Sometimes i know the newer upgrades take time to install on reboot (like .net update i presume) but flexibility to move between users and open programs is just fine!

Will i continue this way thus sacrificing the newer Paint.net program which requires a more recent .net gizmo?

Now i have another problem!

Lastly,

Would like to thank the fine people here for being so patient and generous in their time.
If i could make you a pizza and offer you a beer or glass of wine to go with it...   ;)

Yeah, SIW is great. Thank JoTo for finding it, though ...

Have to go!
Did get a quick glance after installing this program and it does seem to cover quite a bit of ground. I saw Broadcom in there but not much more info about it than that which i have already.

Will take a closer look at it when i come back.

Thanks!

Don't know if you've been here, Dan, but it's a good start!

Yes. That's exactly where i went.
Just did a request for support. Don't know how long that will take but hey! Life is full of good things like spaghetti, pizza and good ol' homemade bread right?!
 ;D

Thanks again to you all for keeping up on this thread.
I'm sure i'll make it to the end this time.
