Living Room / Re: Links page - suggestions wanted
« Last post by Veign on June 08, 2007, 10:24 PM »
Random thoughts:
 - I think the 'Software Used on This Site' should have a page all to its self so you can better highlight the great software that helps drive DC. I know I use SMF because of DC.
- Isn't AnalogX pretty much a dead site?
- How about my freeware or some other online tools that are under the main site.
- Best Software Search site: http://Download.com or http://Softpedia.com
- Best Tech Support try http://ask-leo.com/
- Not sure where this would go http://www.namepros.com/ but its a great source for domain name information, buying, selling, trading.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlook 2007 - a rant

Does this help the speed issue:
http://www.veign.com...of-outlook-2007.html
Veign,

Thanks for the link, but I have already applied the patch, along with many other fixes suggested on various forums. And the patch didn't really help. One of the reasons for the slowness is that the combination of a new database format and the use of Windows Desktop Search for indexing means that there's lot more writing to the hard disk going on all the time as you use Outlook.

I even read one quote from an MS bod who had the nerve to say that the problem was caused by users' large PST files and that "people shouldn't be using it as an archive"! I know what he means, but on the other hand, back when they released Outlook 2003, they boasted about the fact that the PST size limit had gone up from 2GB to 20GB.

My PST is less than 500MB, and it performed fine in Outlook 2003. Outlook 2007 is the problem. I can only presume that everyone at MS uses some form of super-computer and they never, ever see speed issues.

Thanx for the followup.  Good to know...

Agreed, Carol.  I think I have a list of over 50 domains run by this company and its sickening.

I will be making another blog post shortly exposing an additional 25+ domains.
630
This has been reported to Google and they have sent me an email (from an actual person) that states they will be looking into it but will not be able to let me know the outcome.  Hopefully, shortly, their ads will no longer appear on Google.

Still think we need to increase the exposure by Digging it.

Kinda of in the same area of what you're asking is a phone service called Frucall which lets you call an 800#, enter the UPC code, and then get the best prices available online.

General Software Discussion / Re: A Warning about Thinkall.com

Looks like your are right.  The US Federal Trade Commission has loned them up.

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2007/01/manay.htm

Not before time IMHO.

The next internet rogues the FTC should get are Registerfly.

Jeff

Hey - result ....

Except I have been following and blogging about ThinkAll since the start and it seems that even after the FTC injunction that ThinkAll is still charging credit card accounts.  In fact they had gone back online, under their HTTPS connection, for a short time (month or so).

ThinkAll is a very determined company which means they will take their punishment, step back, re-group and come out with another company (scam).

Site/Forum Features / Re: ReadMe: Find out and rant about bad companies

Feel free to move my post about the Software Scamming company into this more appropriate forum.

Maybe each post should be a poll with two options: Agree and Disagree (or a range encompassing those two).  This allows readers to give there opinion on whether they agree with the assessment and gets the community more involved exposing companies.  Just a thought.

Further information

- I think this is the main website: http://interactivebrands.com/
Reason I believe is all of the tracking, stats, and cookies are done through that domain.

Since they are using tracking code in their websites from: http://interactivebr...cripts/trackpidv3.js

Looking inside of that JavaScript file you can see the cookies that are being set.

- If you get to the last step in the signup they are requiring your credit card security code.  Providing that gives them complete and full access to your credit card.

- They, like most scammers, have done this before and possibly under the domain name of MyMp3Live.com.  Read about the discussion.  Both companies add on software like My XP Tools for a fee.  Plus a Whois on the domain shows the same DNS information as the sites I blogged about.  A bit more information is revealed with this domain so I may be able to track more stuff from it.  I see the server housing this domain has 34 other domains and the few I tested were in a weird shutdown but kinda active state.

I think I may be able to track things to a Canadian Marketing company but I can't confirm it at this time so I don't want to post it.

I have a feeling this is the tip of a huge iceberg...

Is this the place to try?

Nice find and I submitted a report also.  I am going to let this post sit on my Blog until after the weekend after which I will post the articles and information you found.

Thanx for the investigation and great finds.
636
Also notice there is nothing on the front page about a "membership" fee that I can find. The scam starts when you click for the download, it then asks for name and email addy, then upon continuing it makes the "subscription" pitch.
Another reason that buried pricing is suspicious.

Plus the sites are professionally design which I'm sure instills confidence in visitors of the website.

Report a Spam Result to Google

I had found that but not sure it classifies as Spam as that tool is for spamming the Google Index and not scamming websites through the Adwords campaign.  Might be worth a try though.
638
By-the-by I have never found a good way to report companies like this to Google and Yahoo.  I searched when I was writing about ThinkAll as they were doing something similar.
639
I contacted Irfanview and waiting to see if he returns my email.
640
Just wanted to let everyone know about a new company that is preying on novice computer users to get them to buy a one year membership to download free software.  This company has 27+ domains and is relying on Google Ads and I'm sure other sponsored ad sources to get there pages above developers pages.  I was tipped off when doing a search for Irfanview and with a little research I found a lot of information about the company.

Read about them:
http://www.veign.com...-on-novice-with.html

Digg the Story to spread the word:
http://digg.com/soft...f_with_free_software

This kinda of stuff bothers me so much as it makes people distrust the internet and small honest companies.
641
Bulk upload support? Where is that and how does that work?

No bulk upload support, yet.  Something I may add in a future version but was concerned that the bulk upload / resizing could hurt my server performance for all my other domains.  This is something I need to test first and see what the strain could be.

Anything like what Coral Cache attempts to do:
http://www.coralcdn.org/

This is a great idea for a website that would work in conjunction with a Firefox addin.  That way the cache is not on your system and the cache could be of Jpegs of the webpage to help reduce the storage space and the amount of files that are stored per user.  Could be huge if someone would create it - Kinda like the Digg Mirror website but on a per user basis.  You could call it something like MyCache.com
645
Thanx for that.  I think that will solve the problem someone asked me last week.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Distance Check by Veign
« Last post by Veign on May 11, 2007, 07:05 PM »
A fun little online application that calculates the distance between two zip codes.  The distance is calculated and general information about each zip code, a map for each zip code and approximate driving time is displayed.

Why?

Like most stuff I do its practice.  This one was practicing with Zip Codes and calculating zip codes that may fall within a certain radius of others.  The best way for me to practice is to make something and usually after its made I create a website out of it in case others find some use.

Distance Check:

More of my online applications:

As always, if you have an idea for something please let me know.

I have been on VPS with GoDaddy for the past year and would never go back to shared hosting again.  Just understand that you are responsible for the server and the admin of the server which, in some cases, can be tricky...
