Isn't it nuclear powered?  All we have to do is get a sanction or two in place, cut off your fuel supply then no more spaceship -- and hello online indicator!

At risk of making it more useful, what if you made it possible to add a list of friends to it, monitoring all my buddies via it.  Maybe even list all online users :D

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: pandora.com - Internet radio for EVERY taste! FREE!
« Last post by allen on October 16, 2006, 11:28 PM »
I still use Pandora quite a lot -- when I'd started slowing down, OpenPandora came out and solved my one issue with it -- the dedicated Pandora browser window.  Being able to run it as if it is its own app was perfect.  I have several stations -- whether it's the chilled out station I listen to when I'm coding or my house cleaning "No Divas" station or an assortment of others, I have a soundtrack for every occasion.  It's ultimately exactly what I wan -- it's generally pretty smart, after some training, of playing quite consistently what I want played; all the while introducing me to new music I had no idea I loved so much.

Allen if you leave I will send a horde of smilies to your house and post them all over your wiki.

Such a cruel form of lock-in!  Emoticons on my wiki . . . *shudders* You know, someone requested that feature once. They didn't get a positive response.

Living Room / Re: Whats the best OS?
« Last post by allen on October 13, 2006, 09:13 PM »
OS versus OS, I love Linux -- most distros, though ubuntu I've spent the most time with. (Prior I used debian -- ubuntu is essentially built on debian but with more timely updates).  I, however, use windows almost exclusively because the -software- I love isn't available for Linux.  Lock in :)

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: req: add "DonationCoder.com" to forum page titles
« Last post by allen on October 11, 2006, 09:28 PM »
Also, a better system, IMO, would be to reverse the current page title phrases for regular pages, like this:

"DonationCoder.com - Software - Mouser - PopUp Wisdom"

With that order, all bookmarks from the site can be grouped simply by sorting a bookmarks folder alphabetically.

I can see how that would be handy for sorting things by alpha -- I guess I prefer to use tags for grouping/filtering things.  I rather dislike when the website precedes the web page in the title as it requires expanding any title field wide enough to accomodate both.  Such a "feature" would force me to forfeit time moving donationcoder.com to the end of the title :P

Living Room / Re: Tagging for text
« Last post by allen on October 11, 2006, 09:25 PM »
As I understand it, he's looking for something that would behave much like an online bookmarking service -- but save text instead of url's so you could have tag-organized quotes/paragraphs/etc. -- useful and relatively simple.  Opera has a built in feature for saving notes (though it's not tag based), I believe there's a firefox extension that does it but am not sure what it is (and don't know about it and tags) -- as for web services, I don't know of one that does this explicitly.  However, almost all bookmarking services allow you to store a comment with them, so you could essentially use an online bookmarking service to do this -- you'd still be bookmarking the page you got the text from (references are good anyway, right?), you'd just use the tags to focus more on the content of the snippet rather than the overall page.  A workaround, but a semi-viable one.

now that there is a search plugin for firefox. your opera custom search would look cool beside it. 8)
so, how about uploading it to DC?
Sorry, but i have no idea on how to do it, i just opened the search page, right-clicked the search field and selected "create search" :D

Much easier than making a moz custom search plugin -- so easy, it doesn't warrant a link :) Maybe a little Opera icon and a blurb that says "If you're using Opera, as everyone should be, just right click in the search box and select 'Create Search'" :P

Allen -
I really like the "BodySilk" image (is that a photo or a vector image?)

BodySilk is vectory -- I was a technique experimentation.  It was a solid black box, sliced for form -- more negative than positive space.

For some reason it wasn't working -- I uninstalled and re-installed, and presto it worked.  Not sure what was going on there, but at least now I can give it a proper test with the keyboard shortcut working. Heaven forbid I have to use a mouse. :)

I have zoo keeper on the Nintendo DS :D
--the story mode really isn't much of a story.  Just an angry zookeeper who hates you for being incompetent -- and with as insanely high as the requried scores are to please him, you're inevitably considered incompetent. Unless you're some sort of asian master of puzzle games -- in which case, you might have a chance.  Assuming you have no other aspirations in life. :)

In my youth I was quite the photographer, I seldom so much as dabble any more -- but I'm fond of my observations of the ol' spiders back when I was in Norfolk; Our property is pretty nice too, but has nothing to do with the photographer :)

Living Room / Re: Blog Article - Social Networking: Time For A Silver Bullet
« Last post by allen on October 06, 2006, 08:19 PM »
At risk of sounding like a cynical ass, my attitude toward social networking services has always been and will likely remain dismissive -- my impression is that it's little more than community building for dummies.

It takes time, effort and like interests to build a community like this and so many smaller communities -- a real personal investment made by many people.  It's that grass-roots, personal investment that gives them their real sentimental value.  These out-of-the-box mish mash communities appear, to me, to be nothing more than instant gratification match-making.

Inherently, a model with so broad an approach makes it the perfect business model and an ideal melting pot for . . . well, the kind of people this instant jack-in-the-box click-go-and-you're-in trendy stuff appeals to.

I don't mean to belittle people that use these services -- it takes all kinds to make the world go round.  I'm just not personally compelled by these things.  More sensation than substance.

Walk accross the middle, there are some panels that change color.  When they're the same color, you can walk through the left door and pop out the right door to drop the plank.

My microwave oven.

I have no idea how I ever got along without one and can't remember what life was like before I got one.

Amen!

Does it count as a gadget, though, or is it an appliance? Since I don't know where to draw the line, I'm going to have to say my favorite gadget is my French press.

Hi,

@Gerome: we'd still accept you if you'd show less negativity, really!

What about negativity ?
Because 1 million of Euro is > to 1 million of USD ?
ROFL

But perhaps the point, Gerome, is that 1 millsion USD > Nothing
-- and as an American company, USD would make sense as the prize, no?
648
I've nothing but love for RTM -- it works great and has kept me from forgetting many birthdays.  I've been using it from the beginning.  Ironically, what I've loved about it is what Gerome hates: the speed and keyboard shortcuts (both of which I've always found more than adequate).  I rather like the orange/blues/greys color scheme as well.

General Software Discussion / Re: Utility to repair clipboard chain?
« Last post by allen on October 02, 2006, 07:12 AM »
Most clipboard extender applications these days have such a feature ( I know for sure acetext, clipmate and clipmagic do ) for reconnecting to the clipboard -- but I don't know of any utility that does it universally (all applications and/or system itself).  These applications just re-establish their own link to the clipboard.

Could have "saved" for what, though?  Most people, or at least many, spend even more time than that -- a part of the daily tradition, even an enjoyable leisure activity.  A way to start the day and/or wind down after.

I found the article to be a bit rubbish -- the whole point of it is to live life uninformed.  If it's not your problem, it doesn't affect you.  Ignore everything that isn't you -- especially, but not necessarily, if it's bad!

Let's crawl into little unaffected bubbles where ignorance equals safety and productivity is key!  Slap the addiction label on any/every thing a person does regularly, cut all that shit out, and then you can have them work 16 hour days, provide 1 or 2 hours a day for eating (can't kick that addiction, after all) and 6 hours sleep.  Now we're talking about a productive lifestyle!
