Below are some scenarios I recall using vi / vim under:

  • Quick startup time handy for quick / small edits
  • Functions ok over slow connections
  • No other options in certain limited environments (e.g. while installing or restricted scenarios)

Knowing some of the key sequences has turned out to be handy in other contexts -- ofc, learning Emacs-ish key bindings also turned out to be useful too :)

By using the dwb browser, I seem to be learning some additional key sequences as well as having others reinforced.  For example, 'gg' for moving the cursor to the top of the buffer (didn't remember this one) and 'G' for moving the cursor to the bottom of the buffer.

In IntelliJ IDEA (and perhaps other environments) I think there are plugins to help one learn key sequences -- may be there are some for vim too.

FWIW, I came across the following when looking for a way to describe what 'gg' does:

Ah, yes, I was about to point that out, "[" is an alias for the "test" command that requires a closing "]" and so requires a space between it and it's argument.

Thanks -- that runs but I get the following error as well after specifying something to run and clicking the 'OK' button:

run-dialog.sh: line 15: [-z: command not found

For values to execute, I tried 'virtualbox' as well as 'palemoon' with similar results.  To be clearer, both programs start up -- I also see error the 'command not found' result output quoted above.


FWIW, changing line 15 so that there's a space between the first character '[' and the second character '-' seemed to silence the error output.

I haven't had much success setting it up to "Always use private browsing mode" -- at least it doesn't look like it's working.

Steps I followed:

-Bring up preferences
-Select the Privacy section
-Select the drop down next to "Pale Moon will" and choose "Use custom settings for history"
-Ensure the checkbox below "Always use private browsing mode" is checked
-Click on the "Close" button at the bottom right of the dialog

After I restart and view the preferences again, I don't get the sense that the previous settings stuck.

Any one else tried this?

FWIW, it looks like I'm using Pale Moon 24.5.0.


My impression about it not working is likely off -- I think I misunderstood what I was seeing :-[

Thanks for the warning -- the second example didn't work out of the box for me.


I liked the following examples from the man page:

Display a progress dialog while searching for all the postscript files in your home directory

  find $HOME -name '*.ps' | yad --progress --pulsate

Display a box with all of the installed desktop applications

  yad --icons --read-dir=/usr/share/applications

I tried uzbl and jumanji a bit -- my initial impression after looking around a bit is that development has slowed or stopped for them.


xxxterm seems to also go by the name have been renamed as 'xombrero' -- just installed.

Pluses:

  • I like how a default search engine is not chosen but instead a screen showing a list of choices is displayed :)
  • Keybindings somehow a little easier to learn than some of the others.
  • Low-contrast color scheme - handy for JoTo and like-minded folk ;)
  • Focusing search field via key binding seems to work pretty well (in contrast, things I happened to try with dwb didn't work out so well)
  • Can jump to beginning / end of document using Home / End keys - dwb provides this via gg and G
  • Can reopen closed tabs

Minuses:

  • A bit ironic that at the time of this writing trying to view the github issues page using xombrero leads to a crash here [1]...
  • I've yet to figure out how to get it to ask for confirmation on quitting...though I guess the appropriate key bindings could be modified or elimintated...
  • I lost part of this post accidentally via some mistyping...but "undo" didn't seem to recover it :(
  • Going back a page seems to position the "view port" at the top of the page - losing where one was looking before going forward or clicking on a link - dwb seems to preserve this
  • Haven't found way to open a link in a new tab in the background - dwb seems to have this
  • Seems to spawn pop-ups in tabs by default - dwb doesn't appear to do this by default
  • Doesn't seem to support key bindings that use multiple modifiers (e.g. both Shift and Control) - dwb doesn't appear to either


Haven't gotten around to Vimprobable yet.  Vimprobable2 also dies on xombrero's github issues page...

It was easy enough to get installed, unfortunately, it also suffers from one of the problems that has not gotten fixed in FF [1], so I'm back to dwb for now.

Having experienced recurring problems with Firefox, am trying out some alternative web browsers.

Tried midori (feels like needs more polish) and dillo (a little too minimal?) already and am currently trying Luakit and dwb.

Both seem fairly light and configurable -- seems to help to have some vi-background though.

Any favorite alternative browsers?

How do I Install a Plugin? Just move the entire Plugin directory that you unzip into the Plugins/ subdirectory of Find and Run Robot.  For example C:\Program Files\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\MySamplePlugin. To uninstall a plugin just delete it from the Plugins/ subdirectory (you can also simply DISABLE it from FARR options).

How can I Configure a Plugin? You can see the list of installed plugins from the Options dialog on the Plugins tab.  Here you can temporary enable or disable plugins, and find information about each installed plugin.  There are also some default options for each plugin that you can adjust.

I tried the surround plugin with some success.  I didn't find any evidence of the plugin populating the menus unfortunately -- hopefully something will turn up.

I didn't know about special soldering tips for lead-free soldering and it was interesting to hear his opinion on specific types of soldering tips -- he seems to be mostly down on conical ones with a preference for the wedge type.  In the previous sentence "tips" refers to what's typically at the end of a soldering iron :)

By default you can't open a file, make a change and then open another file without saving the first one. That seems odd, but I am sure there is some Unix explanation for it.

I don't know about the Unix part of it, but if you think of it as opening another file into the buffer you are working in (so you might lose changes if opening is successful), then may be it doesn't seem so odd?

FWIW, at least in gvim here if you choose "Open Tab..." (:tabnew) after making a change in the current buffer, I am not being asked to save changes.
