Honestly, I don't consider number 7 to be wrong.
The first warning will let people know they have their computers infected with something and are a problem for the rest of the society. If they choose to ignore the warning and not fix the computer or take it to the shop, they are unplugged from the internet.

Something similar happens with cars (in portugal): if your car doesn't pass on the inspection, you must fix it. If you're caught driving it without the inspection in order, the car is apprehended.

Oh, I was going to move this topic to somewhere related to app's apps and noticed there's no such section..
Where do you support your applications, app?

I just tried it under 9.04 i386 (i suppose that's "jaunty", not sure as I think naming every 6-month release with a new name is just idiotic, but I digress) and it's working quite well.

It may be related to your version of wine. Mine is 1.0.1. I also haven't observed any of the strangeness you mentioned with nvidia.

[edit] not sure if it helps, but I'm also running wine-doors (which apparently doesn't display its version anywhere). I'm running version 180.44 of nvidia drivers. [/edit]

« Last post by jgpaiva on September 14, 2009, 09:52 AM »
skwire: true, but see this: the more they type, the better people get at touch-typing.
I think people learn more from the other classes they have now, than on a class of touch-typing. That's why I mentioned it might be an optional extra class, but never a class to replace one of the current classes.

I think it's not that important to actually have a class on touch typing.
I think I write fast enough for my needs, and never had any class.
For me, it might have been useful, however I don't think it's the kind of thing that all kids should learn.
I consider it as something that a specialized group of people might benefit from, and thus only those should choose to have the classes.
For people that specialize in something unrelated to computers, it's just a waste of school resources and of their own time.

General Software Discussion / Re: Will Win7 last as long as XP?
« Last post by jgpaiva on September 13, 2009, 01:47 PM »
win7's taskbar is a whole new concept (well, not very new, one can say it's similar to mac os's dock).
There's a button per application, and you switch between application's windows when you hover over the buttons.

In my opinion, vista suffered way more bad publicity than it deserved, I've used it reliably since it launched and until last year, and found it the best OS I've tried until then.

Regarding UAC.. It's very useful even for a user who installs his own AV. It's great to be able to use an application and know it can't damage your computer. For example: you download an exe and run it on XP, and it may do all sorts of nastyness to your computer. If you try that in Vista, it'll only be able to do it if you let it. It just gives you way more feedback than xp does.

Furthermore, vista, 7 and office 2007 benefit from what I think was one of the best ideas microsoft has had: microsoft user experience.
They have used the knowledge about the user's most frequent actions and problems and tried to work the interface so that those problems would be gone.

It's like innuendo says: it just feels much more confortable.

I'm currently working on my thesis, and to have vector images in the document I usually just print stuff to pdf.
Why can't you do it this way? Just have photoshop print it to pdf, then converting from pdf to eps should be really easy (pdftops + ps2eps).

(a) Yep, did it last week.
(b) From what I've tried, it looks rock solid. Looks like there has been major worry with user interface and generaly making stuff simpler (while I think in Vista they didn't have that objective, some stuff got more complicated than on XP).
(c) Full version, win7 x64 Pro via msdnaa subscription.

I'm not using it as my main OS, so I guess I still need to play with it a bit more. (that's also why I upgraded so fast - I had no important data on the previous windows installation).

My experience is:
I really like the new interface. So much so that I installed a similar taskbar in linux. The update on window management (for maximize/restore) is a huge step forward (linux has done that since a while, it's good to be able to also use it in windows).
I think that programs that run on the tray (steam, winamp and live messenger come to mind) sort of break the interface, since the tray icons are hidden. There may be a way to have them showing, though.
As for drivers, the driver site for my laptop was down, but I installed the nvidia drivers from nvidia site installed with no problems.

Carrotnote: Even though I'm not a frequent use of this kind of software, I'd just like to express my appreciation for your effort of trying to build a fully cross-platform application ;)
I hope it all goes well!

f0dder: not unfeasible for this large corporations, I think..
The same way some publishers have signed code, microsoft could also provide an update and install service.
If the ease-fullness of install of applications was as good as in linux, it would be a major selling point for these big corporations.

Ehtyar: In my opinion, this shouldn't be the solution.
I continue to think that an update manager integrated in windows would make sooo much more sense.
I know I love it in linux, it's keeping me from using windows anymore, and I've always been a windows fan.

I hope that flash warning won't work under linux.. Ubuntu systematically keeps outdated packages, but updates them automatically. I wouldn't like firefox to warn me I have flash outdated when I don't have any new version in the repository.

Still, for windows, I think it's a good improvement - that will probably cause a headache for those users who don't know how to update stuff. My father and mother are constantly annoyed by java and hp stuff when they turn their computer on.

By closely observing the data, I can see you have files with different number of columns.. That'll make the problem even more difficult. Which column exactly do you want to sum?
