FREE Anti-Spyware: Webroot Spy Sweeper

Posted: 28 Dec 2007 10:29 AM CST

Webroot Spy Sweeper. Here’s yet another opportunity to get more free software! For a limited time, you can get your hands on a copy of Webroot Spy Sweeper which will be good for a year. It’s a $29.95 value and will keep you protected from Spyware. It’s their latest version, 5.5, which PC Magazine has said is “easily the best choice for protecting PCs from spyware and for cleaning infected machines.”

As with the AVG offer the other day, we haven’t installed this software ourselves because we have a subscription to ESET Smart Security suite. From what I’ve read though, the process is simple.  Here’s what you need to do:

   1. Click here to sign-up to receive your unique registration number (all that’s needed is a name and email address)
   2. Click here to download Spy Sweeper (direct link!)
   3. Install the app using the registration information you received in step 1

Note:
You’ll want to do the custom install otherwise you’ll get an unwanted toolbar installed.

The only other thing you need to note is that the software is for personal use only… not for use on business computers.

Yes, this is the one, but I couldn't remember the name. Good to know the author is a DC supporting member! This Text Monkey is impressing and makes me think $30 is almost cheap! Really fine work, David!

Well, White Smoke is "English Grammar & Writing Software" for people like me who are not too sure how to say it ("write it") in English:

>> Grammar check (over 65,000 corrections) + Text enrichment (relevant adjectives and adverbs) + Spell check (over 420,000 entries) + Proofreading tool in one click! + Thesaurus (synonyms to expand your vocabulary) + Writing templates (over 600 available) + Advanced Dictionary & Translator + Artificial Intelligence Technology. <<

... what does it do then?! OK, OK, off to Google ..

Funny you should mention Google (se *3 in the quotation box)!

Here are three ways to use 'WhiteSmoke':

1. When using WhiteSmoke with 'MS Word' or 'Outlook' simply type your sentence and click on the 'Enrichment' button and the WhiteSmoke program will appear - ready for use.

2. With any other software you have the benefit of a short-cut key to WhiteSmoke (The default is F2 ). To change this key, right click on the Pencil icon that appears on your system-tray (next to the clock) and then on the button called 'Settings'.

In order to type straight onto the program 'WhiteSmoke':
  a) Right click on the Pencil icon that appears on your taskbar (next to the clock).
  b) Click on 'How to use (F2)'.
  c) Select the tab 'Online Editor'.

3. Now you can use WhiteSmoke with Google! (You need to have Google account). In your Personalized homepage click on 'Add content', type 'Whitesmoke'  and press 'Search homepage content', Click on 'add it now', click 'ok', and then click on 'back to homepage', that's it! (You don't need to install WhiteSmoke in order to use The Google version of WhiteSmoke).

Sincerely,
WhiteSmoke Team

You can have it for some email clients, but I have not heard of any made for Instant Messaging programs - if that is what your company is using? What type and program is your "work's program"?

Forgive me for saying so, but by the look of your paste I would say that the program could be improved - well, you are almost saying that yourself - and to have to read stuff like that really made me even more fun of my Skype  ;)

And the verdict:

One of the things that is mentioned on the eBoostr site is how the software may improve performance for those using a laptop system, which I used to perform my testing on. However, my system has 1G of RAM using Windows XP and I really didn’t notice much of a performance boost. This does not indicate that eBoostr didn’t work. But as mentioned in the comments, eBoostr may be used best on systems with either 256MB or 512MB of RAM, running programs such as Photoshop that tax the system.

Guess what? I have such a system. My wife’s laptop has 512MB and she also runs Photoshop at times. So I gave eBoostr a try on her system. I noted that there was a marked improvement using a 2G USB stick when running Photoshop. The system rendered changes to photo’s she was working with much quicker and there was less hard disk activity. In fact most of the time there was no hard disk activity. :-)

So what does this prove?

eBoostr does work on systems with low on board RAM using taxing programs such as Photoshop.

It also provides an easy way to increase performance without having to open the case. This is particularly attractive for laptop users.

So what is better? Using eBoostr or actually installing more physical RAM?

I’d personal recommend adding more physical RAM. But if cracking open the case, especially a laptop intimates you, than eBoostr is a definite alternative.

It seems this program may be the thing for me and my 448 MB available RAM...

AVG PRO Antivirus

For a limited time you can download and use AVG 7.5 Professional Antivirus for free. For those of you running the always-free version of AVG there are some advantages to making the upgrade, such as advanced scanning and scheduling options.

avg-antivirus.jpg

I haven’t installed this myself because I’ve already bought a subscription to the ESET Smart Security suite, but from what I’ve read the file that you download will automatically enter in a valid serial number during the installation process. There is no word as to how long the subscription is good for, but I’m guessing one year.

AVG 7.5 Professional retails for $29.95, and this offer is good until January 17, 2008. It can only be used for personal use.

Download AVG 7.5 Pro Antivirus for free:
CompuerActive, RapidShare or MegaUpload.

White Smoke is quite often if not always discounted, but this is the lowest offer I have yet recieved: $100 for these special parts of the large program ~ against their "normal" price $333. The math looks like this according to their advert (does this link refer to my email address?):

General Writing version, normal $ 80
Buisness Writing version, normal $100
Creative writing version, normal $100
Multi-Language Translator, normal $40
Back-up license, normal price $13
-------------------------------------
Total price normal:                    $333
- rebate                                  $233
-------------------------------------
Offer until December 31:            $100

Edit:
However, I am not too sure what is the exact meaning of the headline in the email: "2007 clearance". Does it mean that it is some old "2007" version they are trying to sell to me, so I have to pay big money to upgrade to version 2008? Or is it merely that they want to clean 'something' out before 2008? I am not sure yet, so I am writing to ask them, but I wouldn't hold back the offer meanwhile in case you would like to know about it. I hope to recieve their answer this year... and will of course report back. See next post >

Edit: I may have misunderstood the 602Pro company's praise of their product, because in the end of one of their pages it says about this fax feature that "Fax services can be provided through any standard TAPI fax modem. Give network users the ability to send and receive faxes with this easy-to-use fax server. All incoming faxes are delivered to user mailboxes (by Fax ID) or printed directly to a printer", and so maybe does not offer what you asked for.

Hey Darwin. I wish I was the one who could answer you, but frankly I don't know what you were talking about - you know.. Some people have a way with words about IT, other people,... oh... have not way .. and I for one have no idea about what a router is or can do, not to mention a wireless one of the kind, but I find the subject exciting! Please forgive me for displaying my ignorance againagain - but I am truly looking forward to read the other members' answers to your question - maybe they will also reveal what is the meaning of terms like "WEP encryption" and "WPA", or explain why a MAC address filter probably has nothing to do with a MAC?!

 ;D

... is there any argument to be made for continuing to run a software firewall (other than the one that comes with XP) when behind a hardware firewall, MAC address filter, and WEP encryption (router doesn't support WPA)?
