Nice idea. I have licenses for both DirectAccess and for ActiveWords and one point to be made with respect to FARR going down this path is the increase that it will require on its footprint. One of the things that makes FARR so popular is how light on resources it is, I *think* that adding text recognition will impact it in this area.

Even though you've indicated that it's a dead/non issue, I'm really curious about what led to your posing scenario two? I've been hasty in buying shareware in the past only to find that there are free alternatives available. While annoying, it's never occurred to me to blame the developer. Rather, I (try to) put it down to experience and hope to learn from it. So, again, what's the "history" behind number two?

I have a Samsung 2010 - it's great. My only complaint is the volume of the fan after a print job. It actually (no kidding) hurts my ears!

Now, I actually showed up here to say: Curse you patteo! I've assiduously avoided trying FinePrint for at least 5 years (I kid you not) because reading about it I always thought "what's the point"? Zaine's review of it at the Great Software List has been wearing me down for over a year but this was the last straw and I installed both it and ClickBook last night. ClickBook is already gone but I am hopelessly in love with FinePrint. Patteo, this is going to cost me money! My wife will be wanting a word with you when she sees the credit card statement. You have been warned.

I use a badger brush and hard shaving soap, which I lather up and apply to a freshly scrubbed and wet face. I haven't tried an old fashioned safety razor in 25 years and don't know if I can go back (I just chucked two Sensor's because 6 years with Mach 3/Quattro/Fusion have left me a total wimp and I LACERATED my face and neck three times in a row when reverting to what used to be my favourite razor)! My dad swears by them (safety razors) though and has a couple (with a jealously guarded horde of Wilkinson Sword blades - predate the Schik buy-out - doubt he'll part with any of those, though!) so I'll try and give one a shot. I'd actually like to try a straight razor...

I've seen launchy top other lists, too. I was reading one recently and got as far as thinking "I'd better point this bozo towards F&RR", then promptly forgot the whole thing... I had that thought because it was the second time I've seen launchy touted (this makes three) in the last month or so.

I just spent a fruitless 20 minutes trying to find an alternative download link. The pages I *could* read say the file has been removed. The Japanese and Chinese sites throw up "This program cannot display the webpage" in IE7/Maxthon 1.59 and Firefox 2 just sits there. Seems like it's gone!

FWIW, I'm using ButtonBoogie 2.1 by PCMag - it does all that I want it to. I can't comment on resource usage, because I've never been able to find it in TaskManager!

ObjectDock is candy for the eyes, but will to my understanding not remote control any media players, or tell anything about the system - and you'll need the $20 version to have System Tray Support. But even $20 seems cheap.

Both the pro and the free versions accomplish both via "docklets" (much like TrueLaunchBar's plug-ins). To check out what is available, go here, enable advanced search options, then select "docklets". Note that the link goes to a search for "Winamp". I tried Media and got skins only... system resource information is handled by a lot of different docklets, but the most popular seems to be systats, which also works on yzdock, among others. I own a license for ObjectDock Plus but don't have it installed anymore - I use TrueLaunchBar instead.

I'm a DOpus user and love it... However, I've been running a trial of XYplorer and can see what the fuss is about. I love the information panel at the bottom of the screen -very, very useful. The thing I LOVE most about XYplorer (at the moment and after mimimal usage of it) is its portability. DOpus forums are rife with requests for this functionality and there is no official support for it and no plans for adding this in the future. There have been some awkward workarounds that users have posted, but these seem to violate the license. Anyway, XYplorer's portability might just compel me to buy so that I can carry it on my thumbdrive. Now, having said that, I'm always getting enthusiastic about using my thumbdrive in this fashion, but never do

Thanks Arjen! I went so far as to visit the SpySearcher page but didn't download and install. No doubt I will experience Vista's search capabilities first hand in the coming months as new machines with it pre-installed start appearing in stores and in people's homes...

While the comparison chart that is in the pdf is clear enough, it's not clear (to this non-Dutch speaker) what the author is saying about what I presume to be Vista's new searching capabilities and SearchSpy... Can you enlighten us about the reviewer's comments on those? SearchSpy looks interesting (if unfortunately named!).

I happen to have the latest build of Star Office 8 (based on OpenOffice.org) installed on my notebook so created a Flash file from a 72 slide Powerpoint presentation using both Flashspring and Impress. The Flashspring version is half the size of the StarOffice one, was created much more quickly, appears to be of the same quality, AND seems more feature rich (you are given play, forward and reverse buttons in the presentation that are lacking in the OpenOffice file. Finally, StarOffice loaded my cpu and rendered my computer unusable for several stretches of  more than a minute while the file was being generated, with Flashspring I was able to keep using my computer with no discernible "hit" to performance. One thing related to this: I had to try to export the file three times from StarOffice and I could not select a filename because keyboard input took FOREVER. I typed the name of the file into the dialogue and then waited over 30 seconds for the first letter to appear, three minutes later the complete filename still hadn't finished rendering. So, the Star/OpenOffice implementation is free but far from user friendly. There are still several hours to snag a free copy and I say go for it!

Thanks Patteo - I missed this one today. I have giveawayoftheday set up as part of a group in Maxthon but went to bed early last night and forgot to check this morning. This is SWEET!
