Hmm...how about a portable app updating utility?  How would one go about doing that?

Read the post just before yours:
Hmm...how about a portable app updating utility?  How would one go about doing that?

I think PortableApps.com is working on the next version of their launcher thingy that will update their apps. Not sure how far out it is though.

EDIT: It's in beta which you can try out here:

It doesn't matter whose launcher you would use for portable apss, Liberkey or PortableApps, they will install stuff by default you may not want.

That's not accurate either. You can download the PortableApps Launcher separately from any other apps.

Doesn't work for me at all.  Tried it in Firefox and in Chrome.  I enter my address, it loads, I click Play Film, and nothing happens. HTML 5 is awesome!   ...  :(

Didn't work on my birthplace address either, which is odd, given I can find it all day on Google Maps/street view. I keyed in my current address and bingo. If you haven't seen it, it's merely a clever presentation using video, maps, and a person running down the street to get to your address, and then it pans up and outward (all to music).

Hmm... Well I didn't know what it was so I didn't want to give it the address I grew up at, but I used an address in the same neighborhood.

It actually just kind of depressed me thinking about how much has changed since then. :-\

superboyac, I came back to this thread to tell you to get an iPad.

I originally told you that if it was me I'd get an Android tablet. But I've since thought about it and realized it isn't me. That is, you didn't ask me what I would get. You asked what you should get. And it seems to me you want an iPad so you should get what you want.

So they showed me the street where I grew up.  Yawn again.  In spite of my giving them the exact address, they didn't even get to the correct side of the street.

Blame Google Maps for that.

Thanks for the info and presets, 4wd.

So I found out that I made a mistake. Apparently for the PS3 to recognize video files on an external USB drive, it has to be in a specific folder. So I spent all those hours converting a video using XviD4PSP and then deleted the file when I couldn't get it to work. And it probably would have if I had just put it in the right directory on the USB drive. :-[

Also, I recently used DVD Ripper Platinum to rip a DVD to the PS3 using a preset. It worked on that over the course of 3 days (but probably took less than 48 hours, if that makes sense) and split the movie into 3 different files (maxing out at 4GB due to PS3's fat32 limitation). Turns out it thought it was a good idea to change the resolution to 1080p when ripping from a DVD (which is 480p IIRC).

I'm just having all sorts of bad luck with this stuff.  ;D Too bad it seems to be a result of user error. :-[

Living Room / Re: Wikipedia Book Creator
« Last post by Deozaan on September 07, 2010, 04:32 AM »
Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of Wikipedia, though? Once you convert some pages to a book it's potentially out of date instantly.

It would be great if you could save your "books" for later and export them again in the future with all up-to-date wiki pages.

yeah, i just realised before your post and edited mine.

cranioscopical. that is a really, really, sad connection.

Yeah I noticed that you had edited yours while I was typing mine up. . .  :-[

I had it worst on Friday at my parents' house. It was 0.23/0.22, ~500ms ping. But that was because I didn't know my parents' internet was limited so it got throttled to those speeds when I left an MMO Updater (essentially a bittorrent) running overnight.

You seem to have missed Cranioscopical's:

and all for just $100/month  :(

Same price as Shades', worse speeds than yours. (And look at that ping!)

Living Room / Re: Does Flash or java make websites suck?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 07, 2010, 03:58 AM »
I would say over-zealous web-designers make website suck, and flash seems to be the tool of their choice.

Absolutely this. Flash isn't inherently evil. I've seen some amazing things done with it. I've also seen a lot of terrible things done with it.

In that regard it's a lot like the internet itself. There are some really amazing, useful websites (like DC) but there are probably millions upon millions of total junk sites out there (3 or 4 of which are probably mine).

« Last post by Deozaan on September 06, 2010, 09:50 PM »
From what I understood of the e-mail Twitter sent out about the new authentication process, you just need to wait for the developers of your current desktop programs to update to the new authentication method and then they should work fine.

In that same vein, maybe you should check that you have the latest versions of your desktop applications you're using. They might already have new versions out which are compatible with the changes.

Occasionally we get freak hailstorms in the middle of 90-100+ degree weather in the summer. It's burning hot outside and then suddenly the hail pours down like crazy for about a minute and suddenly stops. Then it's hot again.

Nice job!

Strange: openmenu.com doesn't work for me in Chrome. It does work, however, if I prepend it with www. Firefox seems to add the www automatically.

But it doesn't look pretty (in Chrome or Firefox). Something's wrong with the stylesheet and some images. I'm guessing it's because the link to the stylesheet doesn't contain the www.

OpenMenu.com.png

EDIT: IE doesn't like it without the www either, but at least it loads the stylesheet properly!

General Software Discussion / Re: Chrome OS preview looks pretty cool
« Last post by Deozaan on September 04, 2010, 08:03 PM »
Found out from my boss that you log into the *OS* with your Google account. What's up with that?

Yeah, that probably would have seemed weird to me if I hadn't logged into my phone with my google account in starting in May 2009.

You can run ChromeOS from a usb stick now. Boss tried it this morning and had two total system freezes in 10 mins.

I guess a lot of progress has been made in the time since you posted this, since it seems to run very well (a little slow sometimes, but that might by USB transfer speeds) on my netbook. As I mentioned before, there are quirks, but it's been stable (no crashes/freezes).

The only thing I can't figure out is the proper way to shut it down. If I just press the Power button on my netbook it will shut down, but then when I boot into Chrome OS again it says it didn't shut down properly and I have to click the button to restore my tabs.

I think this is going to end up being like my experience with Chrome (browser). When I first heard about it I downloaded it, played with it for a few minutes, then uninstalled it. I was happy with Firefox and Chrome didn't add anything new. Then several months later I gave it another try and now I hate when I have to open Firefox. I did the same kind of thing with Chromium OS. I looked at videos and thought it was cool, but wondered why anyone would want just the browser on their computer. Now, almost a year later I'm actually trying it out and all sorts of uses for this come to my mind.

It won't replace a traditional OS on my desktop (or netbook), by any means, but I can actually see how it would be very useful to other people or in specific situations, and even useful for myself in some situations.

Oh, and I found out how to download files, but it is a little troublesome on my setup. For some reason the pop-up window asking me to download just displays a blank page. But if you bring up the Downloads tab (Ctrl-J) then it will let you choose Save or whatever is necessary.

Arise from the dead, necro-thread!

I just found out about Flow, which is a Chrome OS build that lets you make a Live USB or VMWare image.

In fact, I'm typing this post from within Chrome OS on a Live USB, which is pretty cool, because it means I could boot to my own "portable PC" from any computer that supports booting from USB drive. And since it's all internet/cloud services, there's no need for a huge (in regards to storage space) hard drive. A spare 2GB (minimum) thumb drive should suffice.

Supposedly it even supports my webcam, but I don't know how to test it. Google Talk doesn't have the video/chat plugin installed by default and I'm having trouble installing it. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just not supported or what.

There are other quirks. Something doesn't seem right about the screen's resolution, and I can't find an option to change it. I can't get a game to work on freeciv.net. I turned up the sensitivity of the touchpad to the max but it still seems a bit slow moving.

Anyway, it's fun to play around with, but obviously not ready for prime time yet. I'll definitely be watching for updates now that I can actually run it on my machine(s).

For what it's worth, I think this would be perfect for internet cafes. They could sell little Chrome OS on a Stick and provide little netbooks without a hard drive in them for people to use at the airport or at a internet cafe. Then you wouldn't need to worry about the security of your data on a USB drive in a machine that might copy it all over without your knowledge, and the internet cafe wouldn't have to worry about malware infecting the PCs.

It's really brilliant!

A regular PC doesn't need special multi-touch drivers.

I know that Ubuntu 9.10 worked great on an old tablet PC I put it on, so 10.10 might work without a hitch on your multi-touch capable device. Then again, it might not. :-\

EDIT: It seems as though multi-touch may have been in Linux for some time now. Commenter lkm32 in the article Zaine linked says:

... multitouch has been available in Linux from at least 2007 (yes even before windows) and synaptics touchpad multi-touch from even before that. It was integrated into the kernel before Windows 7 was ever released and always had much more extensibility.

I know the title could be misleading but if you actually read the article you would find that Canonical (company behind Ubuntu) was simply making a new multitouch software interface (as in new way to make the user experience better) and to set standards.

DC Gamer Club / Looking for Playstation 3 players.
« Last post by Deozaan on September 04, 2010, 06:04 PM »
Hi folks,

I love playing multiplayer games, especially cooperative ones. However, I really do not like playing games online with strangers.

I recently got a PS3 and I've been longing to play some multiplayer games with people I know. Unfortunately, I only know three other people who own a PS3, and only I've only been able to coordinate playing games online with one of them (my brother).

I need a bigger friends list to increase the likelihood that I'll be online at the same time as someone else who also has some of the same games as I do.

I don't own many games, and I'm not that into FPS games, but my library is slowly growing over time. Some online multiplayer games I've recently enjoyed are:

LittleBigPlanet
Castle Crashers
Fat Princess
Burnout: Paradise City

If you click on my PSN profile below you can see the games I play (via trophies) and I think maybe you can send me a friend request. If your PSN ID is different from your DC username, please let me know who you are (or that you're from DC) since I'm not in the habit of accepting random friend requests from strangers.

That sounds like SparkleShare's goal, but it's still in its early stages.
That looks like an amazing thing and I'm really itching to try it.  Thanks!

I can't remember where I saw it, but when I first heard about SparkleShare on another site, there were comments made about other programs that do the same thing that were already out. I just can't remember what they were or where that site was. :-/

EDIT: Found it!
