Site/Forum Features / Re: Discussion: How can we Improve DonationCoder?
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 26, 2010, 05:58 PM »
My note about the "donation deterrent effect" wasn't meant to suggest changing the name of the site.  That would kill off any publicity the software associated with it has earned.  I don't know the solution.  Maybe some concise explanation of what people can expect, that could be linked to, would be helpful.

The Coding Snacks board is kind of novel and should be touted a bit more I think.  But one problem is there's a bit of a tongue in cheek quality that's hard to transplant when telling people about it other places. They think you are trying to get them to contract custom software or something like that(spam paranoia again.)  It's just difficult to know how to capsulize why people should visit and look for software and a novel board.

2 Things come to mind.

+1 on the Search Question.

I was kind of surprised as I recently got onto SRWare Iron browser after noticing talk about it on another forum.  Come to find out there was a big thread about it months/years ago I never even noticed.

The 2nd issue is the overall impression when one mentions DonationCoder to those who haven't encountered it.  Many boards have spam paranoia. Seems like when I mention DonationCoder the first 2 paragraphs have to be about the fact that you don't have to pay to get on there, or to use some of the software.  Anything that looks like cost is construed as spam.  I don't think we wan't to attract everyone who is looking for something for nothing, but perhaps a certain percentage so as not to scare off everybody.  I don't know how to determine the "sweet spot" in this trade-off.. but the site is somewhat unusual in its approach.  Mainly I think it has going the fact that many of the software titles get notice on download and review sites.  People sort of back their way into DC because they noticed a particular utility they want to use.

As for the nature of posts and making it easier for people to filter out the banter.. only thing I could think of is perhaps some type of PopUp so that anyone who follows the digression link is forwarned that it's likely to be 90% banter.  They could just not opt to follow that path. Don't know how difficult it would be to implement though.

The balance between discussion and small talk is for someone wiser than I.  To make it tantamount to filling in a form though, I think would make it feel too much like work.  It's a balancing act I suppose.

Bottom line though, I think seeing the word Donation should be handled in such a way as not to scare people off before they even have a clue what it's about(redundancy for emphasis purposes.)

@MilesAhead: Sorry!
I was making (or trying to make) a joke there, but it was ironic and a joke on myself. (The "jerk" pot calling the kettle black - and yes, I thought it was a neat twist too!)
If you took it seriously, then I really do apologise. It was meant to make you smile. I really didn't mean for you to take it seriously. I maybe should have included a smiley or three.
Here they are:  ;D      :)       8)        ;)       :D      :P  (better late than never)

No, I'm sorry.  It was in the early AM and I was one cup short of a coffee.  Believe me, I appreciate it when someone tries to lighten it up. :)

edit: came into the thread at the end and didn't read the whole thing else I would have seen tongue in cheek. :)

@Shades and @MilesAhead: Could we keep on-topic please? It would seem to be a diversion to talk about AJ. I only happened to make reference to AJ in passing, as an example of the sort of content quality improvement that we might consider for the DC site. AJ therefore was not the topic.

So discussing what you brought up is going off topic? That's a neat twist.

btw please don't discuss my response.  Let's stick to the topic.

afa AJ goes... for those like myself not enamored of plastic surgery, I recommend the flick
Foxfire

Not only does AJ display the goods pre operation, but the movie actually has a pretty good plot.  It does tend to devolve into cliche in the last 1/2 hour though.

Like many flicks, the first 45 minutes or so are interesting.

PromptHere v. 1.3

I know what you're thinking.  If I only have to press Enter to get back
to the original folder as described above, why don't you just press it
with the Macro for me?

Good question.  Answer is 1.3.  It presses Enter to return to the original folder.
Please understand with macro kludges it's not so guaranteed to work.  But
it should go as expected most of the time.

PromptHere v. 1.2

Now clicking on an empty space in an Explorer Window with nothing selected
will open a command prompt with the enclosing folder/drive as the working
directory.  I took the lazy way out and used macros.  The side-effect is
if you Alt Middle Click an empty spot in C:\Temp you'll get a command prompt
with C:\Temp as the working directory but your Explorer Window will now be open
to C:\.

For this reason it's smoother to select a file in the folder if one is
available. The macro just saves having to backspace, select the
folder you were in, then Alt Mouse Click.  Same effect in one shot.

But since the original folder in the above scenario should still be selected, you
only have to hit Enter to reenter it.. theoretically at least. :)

PromptHere v. 1.1

I find I do try to use this utility as joby_toss suggested. :)
It's intuitive to select something in the folder you are working
in and hit a hotkey to open a prompt there.

I eliminated "paranoia mode" and set the hotkey active even if the
current window is not an explorer window.  Hopefully there aren't
too many apps out there using Alt Middle Mouse Click.

Now it should work in file managers.
(I tried it in FreeCommander and it seems ok.)

Also if you select one or more items that
are not folders, a single prompt will open
with the enclosing folder as working directory.

(I limit it to one to avoid the silly circumstance where
24 selected files in a folder would provoke opening
24 prompts to the same working directory.)

I've dodged the more difficult case of being in
an empty folder.  If there's nothing to click on
in the folder anyway it keeps the utility simpler
if you just go up one folder and select.  This
avoids a whole bunch of code to read the
window text and extract the folder.  The
HomeFolder utility already does that. (HomeFolder
is AutoIt3 and this utility is in AHK or else I'd just
cut & paste to add it in.)

Thanks joby_toss for prodding me to make this
logical enhancement. :)

I've updated the hotkey page.  PromptHere 1.1 is available for download now.

Please use Selector File version 1.99 or newer to avoid the regression mentioned above.

edit: found the bug finally I think.  v. 1.99 should work as expected
without the program list being mysteriously zeroed out.

See Readme file note about totally deleting the program list by
just deleting the file.

Fixed a bug introduced in the previous update.  Running a 2nd instance of the program would cause it to zero out the data file(s) as it exited.

It's only designed to work with highlighted folder(s) in explorer.  If the window class is not CabinetWClass or ExploreWClass it will not activate.  Those are the Explorer window classes. The attribute for the selected item is checked to make sure it's a directory.

The context menu type may be what you want for inside a file manager.
For one with a different approach you can take a look at HomeFolder.
If a program window is the active window, such as Firefox browser, and you
hit Control NumberPadMinus you'll get a command prompt in the directory
where that program's exe file is.

Different ways to skin the cat. :)

PromptHere v. 1.0

http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

PromptHere is a variation on the old Command Prompt Here.
Instead of using a Registry hack, it uses a Tray Hotkey.

It does not create any Registry entries, .ini files or any files for that matter.

"Install" just consists of unzipping  the exe and readme to an empty folder.
You may want to create a shortcut for your StartUp or taskbar.

Usage:  Leave running in Tray.  Press Alt Middle Mouse Button to open a command prompt
for folder(s) selected in Explorer.

I don't like to let go of the mouse just to hit a hotkey so even though HomeFolder does a similar
task this variation allows me to hang onto the mouse.  Also it's somewhat different in that it can
open more than one prompt.  If you have c:\bookmarks and c:\temp selected when you
Alt Middle Mouse Click then a prompt will open for each with the directory set to that folder.

If you only wish to open one command prompt for the folder you are in, use HomeFolder instead.
It reads the current folder from the title/caption info.

Both are available on the page linked above.

LOL, I'm also curious what Innuendo's DVD Rebuilder log files indicate on the total Rebuild Time.

I always delete that out of habit. Next encode I do I'll try to remember to take screenshots & not delete the log.

Don't know about 8 instances of HCenc all open on the desktop, though. DVD-RB has always opened them minimized. Don't know off-hand if I can change that.

Click 'em all fast and hit Print Screen!!  Even better would be a video.  I'd like to watch the progress bar just go zzzzzzzzzzzzzzooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmm => Done!! Must be almost like just copying the file.
