But read or not - she still claims that climate change is akin to racism/slavery, i.e. she's saying that it's a MORAL issue, and not a scientific issue. That is just wonky.

I'm not for or against anyone here and I'm certainly not supporting her paper.
I [just] think the response was unhelpful, inappropriate, exaggerated, stupid, etc etc.

Update: Here's a story in the Eugene, Oregon Register-Guard newspaper about this incident: http://www.registerg....html.csp?print=true

thanks for that
it confirms my suspicions that the attack, while based on something all right, is also very distorted (intentionally, or simply through lack of responsibility i.e. presuming she meant something from one word and not actually checking) and grossly exaggerated.

“I don’t think this is a space where there’s a real public discourse,” she said. “It’s obvious to me that people aren’t interested in what I actually have to say.

“These are personal attacks. ... If you’re interested in my work, read it. It’s OK to disagree about things, but do so in an honest way and don’t attack people personally.”

Me, I'm tired of all this BS where people pounce on something and rant and rave and exaggerate and ignore. How abouts getting back to good old down to earth responses. All this ranting and raving only serves to marginalise... I for one would love to see a real dabate about what's going on with climate change but dont trust anyone at all at this stage - well especially not people who rant and rave about the other side. It like mutually exclusive religions - and unfortunately both sides are treating it as a belief thing, and adding lots of unhelpful attitudes into the mix.

Not having read her paper (have any of us read her paper?) I cant say I honestly trust any representations of it here or linked here. I mean it *sounds* like it's over the top, but I know that very many of the "against" people -yeah, just like very many of the "pro-people" ;-) love to exaggerate and generalise without actually quoting very closely - or giving decent references, or maybe without even quoting at all...

I reread any quotes I could find linked here or linked from the pages linked here, and nothing I found quoted actually said what people said she was saying. Now possibly that's because she said it in too wordy a manner. But I think if you're going to attack someone so personally, why not make sure people can believe what you say (that she said) ?

As someone who works a fair bit with images, but needs/wants a file manager (not photo-management) I gotta say I'm disappointed by *all* the big file managers. DOpus is the most image friendly, but even there there are some very basic image needs ignored (and I have posted in the forums & made official requests without success).
Interesting, tell me more. I'm currently thinking about developing XY more towards the needs of photographers...

There must be a lot of other people out there who work with images but need a filemanager, not photo-management.
Me, I use images for work, mostly scans: tiffs, jpegs - colour, greyscale, "lineart" (just B/W).
I also use images (photos/scans) for keeping records.
I also use dopus for 'casual' personal photo use.

Important things for me are:

  • A viewer with a separate full window where I can go through the images in the sort-order they are showing in the filemanager
  • A viewer that "talks" with the filemanager - if I start off by opening image #1 from the filemanager in the viewer, and work my way through to image #53 -if I close the viewer then- I want image #53 to now be selected in the filemanager - or at least to have focus
  • An easy way of opening the image currently in the viewer in an external editor
  • An easy way of copying the filepath of the image currently showing in the viewer
  • Consistent handling of different image filetypes; easy way to zoom in and move around the image (e.g. to check quality; or read some text in the image)

I have XY as well, can have another look at that and get back to you - probably better in your forums though :-)
FWIW you can see my Dopus image toolbar here (I mostly just use the rotate buttons)

Miscellaneous beasties... (completely failed to work out how to embed images here)

Miscellaneous beasties lol - and very cute :)
that spider looks like she just had a lot of babies! I think they're the spiders that actually eat other spiders. I've seen a very similar spider killing another spider here a while back and then read up about them (somewhere...)

In case you need it in the future:
Embedding images - in the screenshot below - see the link inline image - select one of thos options for each image (full size/thumbnail etc)

Screenshot - 2012-04-10 , 14_07_15.png

Then add images below the post where the mouse is.

> I thought I was pretty smart and downloaded a blue ribbon and loaded it up on Paint.Net.  For some reason, it's printing a black ribbon.

It is a very dark blue, but part of the problem is probably the printer you're using (most dont deal with subtleties well)

As Renegade says, a vector would be ideal, it would print a lot crisper. I dont have time to make one but if you can find one I could probably modify it (depending on the filetype).

Here's a jpg, in CYMK so it's more WYSIWYG when printing - but only if your monitor plays along :p  [edit] it looks completely different here in FF to in Photoshop, so I guess the programme has to play along as well! Best just to print it and see how it looks, I can modify again if you want. [/edit]

is there a shortcut-way of starting an app as admin from the start menu -
Ctrl+Click, or something like that?

Right+Click, select Run as Administrator.

no, I meant a shortcut method, one click with a qualifier key - maybe it's in FARR ??

I found it :)
Works from the start menu here (wouldnt work for Explorer though):

Using a Keyboard Shortcut

NOTE: This will allow you to temporarily run a program as an administrator once until you close it.

    1. Press and hold Ctrl+Shift while opening the program.

    2. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes to apply permission to allow the program to run with full permission as an Administrator.
NOTE: If you are doing this is while logged in as standard user instead of an administrator, then you will need to provide the administrator's password before the program will run as administrator.

from the Windowst7 forums:

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo open Explorer with admin rights?
« Last post by tomos on April 10, 2012, 06:16 AM »
from StackExchange/Superuser

The Windows 7 shell (Explorer) can be made to run with Administrator privileges by this manual process:

Kill Explorer shell by holding down Shift+Ctrl, right-clicking the Shut down button in the Start Menu, and selecting Exit Explorer
    Start Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc
Elevate Task Manager privileges by going to Processes tab and selecting Show processes from all users
Then start up a new instance of the shell by File | Run in Task Manager, typing in explorer, and selecting the Create this task with administrative privileges.

After following the above process, the Windows shell will be running with administrative privileges, and any programs it launches will also have administrative privileges. This makes performing tasks that require the privilege far easier, particularly for command-line applications, which usually fail silently or with an Access denied. message rather than giving an opportunity to use UAC to elevate the process's privileges.

What I'm interested in, though, is creating an account which uses a privileged shell by default, rather than having to follow this laborious process every time. How can it be done?

FWIW, the general verdict there is that "creating an account which uses a privileged shell by default" is not a good idea (I didnt read enough to figure out if they know *how* to do it). You could turn off UAC, but that doesnt seem like a good idea either (but I'm not sure if that's why you want to run it elevated?)

Still it's what I use and I do like it - I am really a fairly basic user, but I do have it customised enough to make my life easier (I made a series of posts in the Configuring Directory Opus for Fun and Profit thread).

I find it strange that they hide so much of it's power in the default install, XYplorer is much more open & accessible that way.

Another slant - yeah, was already posted :p :D

Well, here's another flying story:

http://rt.com/news/t...lying-car-plane-392/

For decades science fiction writers, and their more practical cousins, engineers, have dreamt of building a flying car. Now that one is about to arrive on the market, the real question emerges: what are flying cars actually for?

US company Terrafugia has variously labeled its Transition model as a “roadable aircraft” and a “street-legal airplane”, perhaps in a quest to avoid the inherent fantastical connotations of “flying car.” Particularly when they are trying to make customers shell out $279,000 for each one.

But functionally, the Transition is definitely a flying car.

Practical or not, it definitely seems cool! :D

they say you could get a better plane *and* car for that price - so I'll probably do that instead ;)

if you used (say) ScreenShotCaptor (SSC), then the image is captured into SSC's working buffer and saved as a file. However, I think SSC does not get the image copied into the Clipboard.

see SC Options >Post Capture Options
Select "Copy image to clipboard" :-)

Crabby, if you're not sure what you're doing, and you'd like to revert to how things were, you could consider using System Restore.
I tried this second... unfortunately this didn't help either... but I was able to learn what to expect from Vista's System Restore.   :)   The only noticable change was... the DATA (D:) file name, on the Start Menu's right pane, reverted back to Documents... but all the files (that I had moved) were still in D:\

I still have the original issue though...  ;D  ...running out of disk space on C:    ... but I think I'm through with moving stuff around to get it.

The system restore only changes what's on the C: partition.
OK, I suspect what that means is that your "My Documents" are on C: again. The files are also on D - but that is just a copy of them - if you save a file in My Docs I reckon it will be on C:

Dont get too trigger happy Crabby :D
please only do one thing at a time - I mean dont be doing system restores and at the same time trying out other things that will change stuff - cause you'll end up not knowing what has changed what which could make things difficult to recover from if anything goes wrong.

So to summarise:
the system restore *did* work:

  • Your My Docs are back on C:
  • You now have a copy of the files from My Docs on D:

so you're roughly back where you started ;-)

I'm bowing out here :)

To move your documents to the D drive:

I think that Crabby has already moved "Documents" to the D partition -
but instead of being in D:\Documents they are simply in D:\

(have a look at his previous post - I may well be misunderstanding it...)

PS - also note: it's Vista - I dont know if that varies much/any from Win7...

(The DATA (D:), that used to say Documents, was already highlighted... I clicked it anyway but nothing changed.)

When I clicked the Addressbar... it changed from Computer>DATA (D:)>     to D:\

Note:  As I mentioned above, I think Reply#15, my Start Menu now lists Documents as DATA (D:).    In the right pane.

Well, it seems like the whole D: partition is now "My Docs" :-\
That doesnt seem to be ideal to me.

Better would be e.g. D:\Documents - then you could also have
D:\Pictures etc. etc.

At this stage, I'd wait and see what someone more expert than me has to say about it all ;-)

Not sure what you mean.   :tellme:

One way of checking would be to try to open a file using WordPad
in the menu File>Open or use the shortcut Control+O

I get this dialogue

Screenshot - 2012-04-06 , 15_03_52.png

- it will look different on your machine, but Documents or My Documents should be shown on the left - click on that.
If you're not sure whats being shown just try and describe anyway :-)

If I click on the Addressbar towards the top - it's highlighted in this screenshot - if I click in there, it will change from something like
Users > XYZ > My Documents
in my case it changes to:
Z:/My Documents
(cause that's where *my* docs are!)

Screenshot - 2012-04-06 , 15_04_52.png

This might not be so clear on your machine, but it's worth a shot!

I think Windows fixed this issue for me.   :)

I just opened WordPad, clicked New and used Save As.  When I opened it again... D: was listed before the file name and... and... IT OPENED!!!!!    :D

So, if you go to my documents now (or "Documents") can you check if the location is actually on D:

I'm not really qualified to help you, (1) not having Vista, and (2) not being expert enough.

Veering slightly off-topic:

# The creation of the humerous/offensive video (Alex Jones) serves to
a large extent to make people more sympathetic to the person/cause
it so personally attacks. (I'm talking about people who are not already
supporters of that cause **)

# YouTube/Google OTOH, by censoring the video, ironically serve to
create sympathy for the person/cause they censor.

This could be called my opinion - but to me this is patently obvious.
I see it again and again and again and again. People who think they
are helping a cause actually damaging it and thereby supporting
whatever it is they're fighting...

** I'm a good example of a casual fairly neutral person watching the
vid - and I am honestly neutral in this climate debate because I'm
so totally confused by it at this stage. I see what this woman has
written as offensive and stupid. I watch his video and I sympathise
with her -because of the personal attack on her looks/facial expression-
and thereby his (Alex Jones) cause is weakened in my eyes.

Similarly with Google's censorship..

Hi crabby3
how exactly did you try to open the file in WordPad?
Was it a file that was previously opened and you just clicked it in the recently opened list?

If you feel it didnt work properly I see this in the comments for that page you link to:
