I've been waiting for TrillianAstra for a long time as well. In the meantime, I discovered Miranda and, while I'll certainly be test driving Astra when it finally comes out, Miranda suits my needs perfectly. My only beef is that every time I update to the latest build, some of my settings and plugins will vanish (this is quite random) and I have to reconfigure it. Other than that, it's fine. Of course, this may just mean that I should leave well enough alone - "if it's not broken don't fix it"!

Well, I uninstalled Enso late last night. *Kind* of liked it but couldn't get over my issue with the trigger key (see notes above) and couldn't get used to having to type a naturalistic command. I think that if more configureability is added in future builds this will be an interesting app.

No worries, TucknDar, there are lots of free alternatives anyway, so if you need this functionality in the future, it won't cost you! WinPatrol 2007 (which is in beta but due to be released Feb. 12) is one of them - there is a Pro version as well, but this particular functionality is also part of the free version. There is also Startup Delayer, which has been discussed extensively, and generally favourably, on various threads in the donationcoder forums... To a name but two.
6104
TucknDar, I've tried apps that delay startup and the short answer to your question is no. However, where I find this functionality useful is when there are certain apps that take a long time to start and bottleneck my system startup. Often these are nice to have running in the background but are non-essential for getting down to work first thing in the morning. Delaying their startup by a couple of minutes means that you've got a fully functioning computer before they start, so you can get on with checking your e-mail while they load in the background. The only app I have (though no longer use much) that this feature was useful for is ActiveWords.

Excellent question, urlwolf. I've always wondered (but wondering never turned to asking...) if it was possible to abort a reboot/shutdown.

OK I found it COMPLETELY by accident. There's a little doo-hickey (that's a technical term) on the left of the Evernote screen (see attached image). This expands a hidden panel to the left, revealing the "deleted notes" folder (at the top, under "autocategories"). Notice that my "two notes top" turns out to be 36 deleted since I installed Evernote. Who knew?  :-[

THANK YOU Nudone! If I hadn't gone off looking for an answer to your question, I never would have noticed the "notes list" button. Simply enabling the notes list just made Evernote about 5x more intuitive for me. I know that makes me a bit sad, but such is life... Now I'm intrigued about the deleted notes collection. I've probably deleted two notes tops in four months, so it's never occurred to me to go looking for them. As you've no doubt already found, the only mention in the help file is of the collection, without any indication about how to find it... I'll keep looking!

I should have mentioned FARR, AppRocket, etc. in my discusssion of the trigger. Hitting a trigger key or sequence of keys to invoke a field that you then start typing in works well for me, too. My problem with Enso is having to hold down your trigger key while typing a naturalistic sentence. Also, I must recognise my own obsession with resource consumption. This is why I got rid of all apps that tweaked my RAM. Other than WinDVD 8, which will use up ALL free RAM and bring my machine crashing to a halt, my machine is pretty carefree whether it's got 700MB or 70MB free, so it's a bit irrational of me to be so fixated on it. Enso's memory consumption isn't, in a world of multi-gigabyte RAM configurations, really that alarming.

Well... I've watched, read, learned and I liked what I saw. I've downloaded, played and am less enthusiastic. First, holding down THE KEY THAT SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS while typing a command is a royal pain in the rear, though I would probably get used to it (my left pinky is actually SORE). Second, I'm on Win XP Pro Sp-2 (fully patched) and I can't go anywhere near the system tray icon with the mouse without Enso crashing. I've submitted a bug report. Now, this business about typing a natural language-esque command IS compelling BUT after using both ActiveWords and DirectAccess it's a bit of step backward. I mean, all I need to do to launch notepad under either launcher is type my command and hit my trigger and it opens. I don't have to hold down THE KEY THAT SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS while I type out a sentence. I understand that this makes Enso much more simple to use, from the perspective that one does not need to remember hundreds of word commands, but I find it very awkward. Maybe if I could assign an alternative trigger key I would find it less annoying. Finally, resource use is rather excessive. My prediction about Enso having only THE KEY THAT SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS to monitor resulting in reduced memory usage was wrong, very wrong. Out of the box and before I had even used it, it was at just under 50 MB RAM consumption (32 MB VM) which is where both AW and DA are after a lot of usage. After the last crash it's restarted itself and I've not even invoked the trigger and it's sitting at 38 MB VM. AW, in comparison, also spell checks everything that I type on the fly and it's footprint is about the same AFTER I've been using it for a few hours. To be sure, Enso shows great potential, but there are a number of things that would need to be tweaked before I'd consider forking out any cash for it. Still, I'll keep playing and see if I can fall in love over the course of the trial...

On a positive note, I like the open cmd -I wish AW or DA would do this (essentially what FARR does; show me a list of start menu links and favourites/bookmarks that are similar to what I am typing). Perhaps I'll drop a word into the (receptive) ears of the respective developers.

I'll talk more about the philosophy of the programs, and relate them to what program is suited for what user

I like the sound of that. Just to clarify, I don't use X1 and DOpus as part of my note taking regimen; I'd managed to digress to talking about file organization in addition to notetaking! mea culpa...

General Software Discussion / Re: console: a great CMD.exe replacement application
« Last post by Darwin on February 01, 2007, 05:59 PM »
AFAIK TCI is simply an app that allows you to run your command line of chioce - cmd.exe, 4NT, TC, bash, etc within a tabbed interface (ie it doesn't have any built in command line). I have TC and PromptPal on my systems and like them both. I *think* TC is more powerful as it doesn't make use of any MS components and has 100's of additional native commands. PromptPal is a magnificent update on the GUI for cmd.exe (it runs on top of it) allowing for tabbed command prompts, editing (cutting, copying and pasting - the single most important feature in my opinion) and features a context sensitive dropdown menu of dos commands, which I have found very helpful.

Anyway, I'll give console a look. Thanks urlwolf!

It IS a bit like running around in circles chasing one's tail. I've kind of settled into a cocktail of DOpus, X1, Locate, Evernote, TNP, and Net Snippets. Net stuff gets saved to both Net Snippets and Evernote but accessed via Net Snippets unless I can't remember what I did with it. I like Net Snippets because I still like to exert control over how my stuff is organized. Evernote is simpler and more powerful but I can't ORGANISE it - it does this for me, in a way... I use TNP for projects, as noted above, X1 to find content in my files, mostly pdf's, locate 3 to quickly find files, and DOpus to do the aforementioned organisation. Essentially, I'm in love with software and am always looking for the perfect app. I suspect that I'd be deeply unhappy if I actually found an app that did everything that I require of it  - the software collecting compulsion is simply too strong...

OK agreed let's put a cap on discussing CAPS  :D

I agree with nontroppo about the desireability of gaining Quicksilver's functionality under Windows. Note that, as I've stated in the past, I've never actually played with Quicksilver and don't even know anyone that has it installed. Anway, I guess I didn't read the Enzo hype, er, marketing closely enough to "get" that it is meant to be analogous to Quicksilver on the windows platform. Perhaps I should give it a blast afterall (quibbles about that which we will no longer obsess about aside). Actually, if I wasn't so stingy, I'd upgrade my iBook to OSX 10.3.x and play with Quicksilver to see what all the fuss is about (Quicksilver won't run under 10.2.x)!

Nudone, I have the beta of Evernote 2.0 installed and Superboyac is right about finding unorganized data. I place everything in it and have little trouble finding it later. It even as OCR technology built in and can index, search for, and find text in photos and scans. Of course, I've yet to figure out how to use this feature (but I don't need it, either, so have not been overly motivated)!

Regarding configuring DOpus, YES! it can be quite confusing. The problem, for me, is that I find the documentation to be quite dense, so it takes a long time for me to get from inspiration to realisation when I'm tweaking DOpus. What I hate about configuring DOpus in general is that it takes me ages to figure out how to do something. When I get everything just "so" it's perfect for months, even years, until I want to tweak it further - then I'm back digging through the manual and help files because I have usually forgotten how to do what I need to do. Frustrating, but I still can't live without it...

Hmm... this is what has kept me from even considering trying it (along with other niggling factors like the price...) - I use the CAPS lock often and can't imagine why a developer would consider coopting it for another purpose, particularly as, if I understand correctly, there is no option for changing the trigger to one of the user's choice. I can understand the attractiveness of a single key trigger in comparison to Active Words or Nagarsoft's Direct Access because presumably it is ligher on resources - AW and DA have to monitor all keyboard activity looking for trigger words while Enzo only has to watch for the CAPS key trigger. Still, I think it an odd choice. Why not just go with convention and use ALT or CTRL-SPACEBAR as a trigger, type your word/phrase or whaterever and then ENTER or some other key or sequence of keys to execute the command? Really, using the CAPS key seems a bit twee - an attempt to be overly clever and "different" - and I fully expect to see it dropped, or at least the option to change it made available, imminently...

I wonder if one needs to actually keep holding down the CAPS key while typing or whether the lock needs to be activated, the command typed and then the lock deactivated to enable Enzo's functionality (he asks with no intention of trying Enzo out for himself!)?

Mouser wrote:
BUT if  version 4 costs $100

Sadly, mouser's worst case scenario has been seen in the wild, but it is uncommon. I have mixed feelings about a developer announcing that a new version of an app is about to be released. It depends on their upgrade policy. If they have a 90 day upgrade guarantee, then there's no need for this kind of disclaimer. If they have an iron clad policy of all major releases requiring payment regardless of when the end-user bought the license (some developers that target enterprise clients don't even provide free point release updates - ESRI ArcGIS comes to mind - 9.1 to 9.2 is a paid update unless you've purchased a plan and this is on amodular package that's $1500 for the base - many of the modules are $1500 OR MORE!) , then I think from a moral perspective they should give prospective purchasers a warning. This makes sense from a support perspective as well. Surely it's easier/desireable to have as many clients as possible on the latest version, no? Anyway, while I invoke the word "moral" above, I don't think that there is any obligation that developers do this...

EDIT: added quote from mouser

There is an excellent DOpus plug-in that allows you to edit txt files, amongst other things (it's called the Source Code Viewer plugin). Find it here...

From the website:

anchor | Posted: Sun Nov 20, 2005 2:40 am    Post subject: Source Code Viewer Plugin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Source Code Viewer is a freeware plugin for Directory Opus. It provides an enhanced viewer pane for viewing your source code using the freeware Scintilla control (http://www.scintilla.org). This control provides a host of features including syntax colouring, line numbering, code block folding, word wrapping and brace matching amongst others.

The plugin also allows you to edit your code, search for text, goto lines, add your own languages, etc.

I have version 1.2 installed and find it very useful. You view and edit your files and and are then prompted to save them when you switch to a different file.

PS I didn't even realize that ACDSee would index and organize more than multimedia stuff (I only had it installed for a brief time couple of years ago, but I know that it's very powerful).

I love TNP but only use it occasionally. For example, recently I had a job application to put together that required cv, cover letter, statement of research interests and plans, statement of teaching philosophy, and a statement of expected contributions to the department and university. It was great for organizing this, though once I was ready to do my final edit, I wound up in Word 2003 because of formatting issues. But I digress...

I agree with the assessment that what is really needed is an interface for one's data. Something like ACDSee for everything, not just multimedia stuff... I suppose that X1/Yahoo Desktop Search is close, but both are resource hogs. NeXT OS used to be sort of like this. I never used it, but my MSc supervisor for my had a NeXT box when I was using Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. I used to sit in his office in awe of the interface and power of his computer...

I like Kevin's idea for a combo file explorer/organizer - something like DOpus with built in indexing and organization capabilities...
