I'm just quoting from what was said in the interview.  Maybe it was an average, which would (I think) be going down by now?

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but what you wrote wasn't in quotes and you didn't mention an interview. That said, I'm not trying to argue about it. I think I made myself clear previously that I didn't doubt what you said was true--at some point in time--but it doesn't seem to be the case as of now.

2.  The developer, with no copy protection, no distribution channel, and none of the BS that the software industry says is 'necessary' is making $350,000 a day.  Yes... that's a day, as in one sold per 3 seconds.

That's a bit high. He probably did make that much in one day, for perhaps a few days even, but I don't think it's accurate to say he does that every day.

Let the stats speak for themselves:

1103443 registered users, of which 334312 (30.29%) have bought the game.

In the last 24 hours, 28007 people registered, and 10753 people bought the game.

A sale every three seconds would be 28,800 purchases per day. And as stated above, in the past 24 hours, it's been just over 1/3 of that.

Even still, 10,000 sales per day is about $150,000 USD every day. I wouldn't complain about that. :)

Describing what Minecraft is can be a little difficult. Even the developer doesn't seem quite sure how to describe it:

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks while running from skeletons. Or something like that..

Sadly, his description doesn't do the game justice, nor does it entice people to really find out what it's about. It's probably more accurate to say Minecraft is kind of like a first-person version of Dwarf Fortress, except then you'd have to know what Dwarf Fortress was for that to mean anything.

EDIT: A new introductory video has been put on Minecraft's front page. This is a lot more interesting than a video of him testing out mine carts.

You arrive in the huge world (about 8 times the surface area of the Earth, but not even close to the same depth) with nothing but your good health and will to survive. You need to gather natural resources which you can use to craft into various tools and goods, which you then use to craft more tools or for certain purposes. But be careful when night falls (or any time inside dark caverns) for that is when/where the monsters lurk! And there are more than just skeletons to run away from or fight.

This makes your first day in the game somewhat frantic, since you only have about 10 minutes of daylight to create a shelter with lights before the sun goes down and the monsters come out to destroy you. It's imperative to have lights in your shelter, since the monsters can spawn anywhere it's dark. As I said, this means outside at night and anytime inside/underground in the dark.

Here's a YouTube playlist of X's Adventures in Minecraft which will teach you the basics on getting started in the game.

The game itself has a free Classic mode available to all, which is almost like a LEGO Land simulator. As far as I know there are no enemies and no way to die. You just place blocks to your heart's content to build interesting things.

The latest Alpha version is where the fun I described above is, but it will cost you €9.95 (about $15 USD, currently).

Both versions of the game also support multiplayer, but the Alpha version's server doesn't have all the features implemented yet and is still quite buggy. That said, this game has been wildly successful. Even though it's only in Alpha over 300,000 people have purchased the game!

I recommend you give it a try and watch a few of the videos in the playlist to see if you think it's worth the €10. I personally paid for it back when it didn't even have all the features of what is now called Classic mode. I was very pleasantly surprised to see it turn into such a fun game in the meantime.

And Notch (the developer) has just announced an upcoming Halloween Themed update with some more features and bugfixes and other improvements.

DC Gamer Club / Left4Dead 1 & 2 bundle for $10.19 on Steam
« Last post by Deozaan on October 05, 2010, 02:35 PM »
Left4Dead is an interesting cooperative zombie apocalypse survival game pitting four "survivors" against a horde of the undead. One of the great things about the game (IMO) is the focus on cooperative play rather than competitive deathmatch. You rely on the help of your teammates and truly have to work together if you want to survive.

Right now Steam has the two games on sale for just under $7 USD each or you can get the bundle of both of them for just $10.19.

If you enjoy first-person shooters and/or are in the mood for something unique and cooperative, you should definitely give these games a try.

I have a mini-set of Zen Magnets and they are really great.  I just regret I didn't buy the full set...
You mean the full Zen set or the Mandala set, which has the same number of magnets as 8 Zen sets?
The Mini from this page : http://zenmagnets.co.../index.php?p=1_2_Buy

I understood that much. ;D What I was asking was when you said you regret you didn't buy the full set, were you talking about the Zen set or the Mandala set?

In retrospect, I should have just quoted the statement of regret when asking my question, since that's what I was directly replying to. :-[

General Software Discussion / Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat)
« Last post by Deozaan on October 05, 2010, 03:00 AM »
Hello again! It's time for my semi-annual Ubuntu thread. Ubuntu 10.10 is just around the corner!

Every 6 months I install the latest version of Ubuntu and try it out to see what's new and how it works. This new version doesn't seem to have many new features. The notable differences that stick out to me are related the Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE):

The new Unity interface is now the default in Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It includes places for launching applications and browsing files, semantic search through the usage of zeitgeist, optimizing vertical space with a global menu bar and maximizing application by default. A launcher is also available for keeping and dealing with mostly used applications. All favorites from UNE lucid or gnome panel items and desktop shortcuts are automatically transitioned to the launcher on first run.

In addition to that, the date and time indicator now has a real calendar widget and is included by default.

It appears as though the new Unity interface will address my previous complaints of the huge UI on tiny netbook screens:

I'm also frustrated with the fact that their idea of a version of Ubuntu made especially with small screens of netbooks in mind basically means making all the icons and everything so huge that it takes up half of the screen and you have to use scrollbars on everything to be able to see it all.

More ranting on huge UIs on tiny screens
(see attachment in previous post) (see attachment in previous post)

And there are other little things that are annoying. For instance, in Firefox, changing the toolbars to use small icons doesn't actually change the height of the bar. The icons get smaller, but the area the toolbar takes up is still exactly the same. So there's no reason to use small icons. I change to small icons even on my 19" monitors just to save the visual real-estate. But on a netbook especially, those 10 or so pixels would make a difference.

My idea of "optimized for a small screen" is to make everything minimalist and compact so I can see as much information as possible. But they did the opposite. It just feels so contradictory. It's like buying a Large Print edition of a book that's printed on paper the size of 3x5 notecards: Sure, the whole book is there, but you'd be turning the page every 3 or 4 words.

The tiny screens already have low resolutions to keep things from getting too small. No need to use 128x128 pixel icons when the vertical space only measures at 600 pixels.

For some reason the big, dumbed-down UI just feels restrictive to me. It gives me the feeling that all of the same controls of the desktop edition aren't there. It makes me feel like I'm using a Smart Phone OS, rather than a "real" computer OS. And even though I'm pretty sure you can still do everything from the terminal at the very least, I can't get over that feeling that I'm limited.

I had decided after last time that I would never put UNE on my netbook again because I hated the huge UI so much, but it appears as though I'll have to give it another try now that it has adopted a more minimalistic theme.

We focused on maximising screen real estate for content. In particular, we focused on maximising the available vertical pixels for web browsing. Netbooks have screens which are wide, but shallow. Notebooks in general are moving to wide screen formats. So vertical space is more precious than horizontal space.

Well duh! and it's about time!

Mockup of Unity.png
Unity mockup.

All that said, I haven't tried out the beta or the RC yet, and since it's only a few days away from the official final release, I'm just going to wait until then before I put it on my PCs (with Wubiw). I'd be glad to hear opinions and experiences any of you have with it, as well.

I could be way wrong here, but I thought the screen/account was locked when a PC is being accessed remotely via RDP. If so, would it have anything to do with that?
6113
;D It isn't impossible! I know because I don't have a little computer with a red X in my system tray. I'd love to tell y'all how I managed to get rid of it, but I haven't the foggiest. With the vast extent of my computer knowledge, I probably right-clicked on it and chose "Disappear".

You probably disabled the device, which does indeed make it disappear, but superboyac said he didn't want to go that route.

DC Gamer Club / Ludum Dare October Challenge
« Last post by Deozaan on September 29, 2010, 10:37 PM »
Ludum Dare is a tri-annual challenge to program a game (essentially from scratch) in 48 hours.
Ludum Dare Competition rules are stricter than the Jam rules. This is to encourage a fairer playing field for participants. The core rules are:

  • You must work alone (solo).
  • All game code and content must be created within the 48 hours. **
  • Games must be based on the theme.
  • All libraries, middleware, content creation, and development tools are allowed.
  • Source code must be included.

Special Competition Exemptions **
  • Base code and personal code libraries are allowed, but should be declared and shared with the community prior to beginning your entry. To do this, make a blog post.
  • Photos and recordings you make of people or things are acceptable content, just you must acquire them during the competition.
  • Fonts, drum loops, drum samples, and sampled instruments are allowed IF you have the legal right to use them.
  • Content generators are allowed. In fact, you are encouraged to create them and share them with the community. sfxr, the extremely popular sound effect generator was originally created for Ludum Dare. It has since gone on to be used in many indie and commercial games.
  • A logo/intro screen you use on all your works is allowed (e.g. “by Super-Great Productions”).
  • By special request, post Ludum Dare 18, we will allow the use of the Wilhelm Scream, one of the oldest memes in television, movies and games. Sound files can be found on Archive.org. *NEW*
  • Porting (especially to Windows) can happen after the initial 48 hours. The longer you wait though, the less of a chance other participants will have to play your game.

There is also "The Jam" which is a more relaxed version of the Challenge.

In October, however, a friendly challenge from one member to the others in the IRC channel takes things to the next level. The goal is simple: Make a game, take it to market, and sell at least 1 copy by the end of October to succeed.

More details on the October challenge.

Maybe it was in a recent Windows update? I've had Windows 7 since about the time it was released and it was only recently that I started encountering problems with my HDDs spinning down, too. Then again, I did just recently format and do a fresh install. . .

true, having creases on the screen would be rubbish - i'd hope that is something that can be overcome. well, it will be overcome won't it - just how and when is the question.

I wouldn't mind carrying around an OLED scroll about the size of a pencil or sharpie in my bag. That right there would be taller than my netbook's screen.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be directly connected to the internet to get infected.

Someone could bring in a USB drive that was infected and connect it to a PC on the intranet which infects it.

I'm making this up as I go along so I'm probably wrong but it makes sense to me.  :D
6119
why not use same project? no harm in that given the deadline of nov 15 since you might be releasing betas of your nany by then and it will take them a couple of weeks to judge, etc.

Because NANY expressly forbids previous releases.

...and my game has nothing to do with the theme...

General Software Discussion / Re: What HTML5 can do -- cool site
« Last post by Deozaan on September 23, 2010, 03:15 AM »
Here's another interesting demo - Canvas Pinball

From the site description:

This demo is a simple pinball game that uses several HTML5 technologies along with the Box2D physics engine. It uses HTML5 Canvas element for drawing, and @font-face and WOFF for font embedding.

Neat little proof of concept but it has some major bugs:

1. Pinball flippers are supposed to move fast so they propel the ball. These ones just mosey on up into position.
2. When you get a multiball bonus, none of the extra balls matter. If the original ball falls down the tube, you've lost "a life" and can even get a Game Over while several other balls are still in play.
6122
That would be cool except I already committed to a NANY project this year. :)

It might be your hard drives being put to sleep after a short time. Windows 7 had it set to about 20 minutes by default on "Balanced" so any time I'd do something that needed a hard drive it would have to spin up again.

Living Room / Re: Where have all the trackballs gone!
« Last post by Deozaan on September 23, 2010, 01:21 AM »
I've been using a Trackman Wheel Optical for a number of years now and loving it. Unfortunately it's slowly been degrading in performance this year and about a month ago I finally got tired of it not clicking when I told it to and am now using a more standard mouse (sensor underneath).

I, too, have been disappointed in the lack of thumb trackballs. It just doesn't seem right to use my other fingers on a trackball.

That said, Logitech has a new trackball available for pre-order which has stuff in logical places. I, for one, cannot wait for this device!

Logitech Wireless Trackball M570

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Sounds awesome! It will be so nice to finally be able to go wireless with a trackball with stuff in its logical place.

I don't think I'm going to pre-order though. I bet I could buy it new off Amazon when it comes out and get free shipping.
